Chapter 9 - THE SUNRISE AT HOME

The morning sun broke through the clouds, casting a warm golden light over the Moretti estate.

The nightmare was over.

With Mia safely secured, Luca had unleashed the full force of his loyal captains on the Bellini family. By dawn, Carlo Bellini was arrested on federal racketeering and kidnapping charges, completely dismantling his empire.

Vanessa had vanished, leaving only the silver bracelet behind.

I stood in the kitchen, pouring a fresh cup of coffee, feeling the exhaustion deep in my bones.

The kitchen doors pushed open.

Luca walked in, carrying a sleeping Mia against his shoulder. Her small arms were wrapped tightly around his neck.

He looked completely different.

The hardened mafia boss was gone. In his place was a father who had just found his entire world.

“She finally fell asleep,” Luca whispered, smiling tiredly.

“She’s beautiful, Mr. Moretti,” I said gently.

“Luca,” he corrected me. “You call me Luca.”

He sat down at the table, shifting Mia carefully.

Teresa walked into the kitchen, looking younger than she had in years. She had taken off the Bellini bracelet for good.

Walter trotted slowly beside her, his tail wagging happily.

He walked right up to Luca and rested his chin on Mia’s dangling foot.

The old dog had protected her when she was a baby. He remembered her.

“He knew,” Teresa smiled through tears. “Walter knew she was out there. That’s why he always waited by the door.”

Luca reached down and scratched Walter’s ears.

“You’re a good boy, Walter,” Luca said softly.

Teresa looked at me.

“Claire, we owe you everything. You saved my son. You saved my granddaughter.”

“I was just doing my job, ma'am.”

Luca looked up, his dark eyes locking onto mine.

“No, Claire. A maid does a job. You protected my family. You are family now.”

He reached into his pocket and placed an envelope on the table.

“I paid off your father’s medical bills this morning,” Luca said. “Every cent.”

I gasped, covering my mouth as tears flooded my eyes. “Luca, you didn't have to do that.”

“It’s done,” he said firmly. “And from now on, you don't wear a uniform in this house. You’re Mia’s guardian. You’re in charge of her care, her schooling, everything. Name your salary.”

I looked at the sleeping little girl, the happy grandmother, and the old, faithful dog.

I had finally found a place where I belonged.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

For the first time in four years, the Moretti house wasn't filled with ghosts or secrets.

It was filled with love.
