Chapter 6 - The Vault of Lies

We brought Caroline back to the Moretti estate in the dead of night.
Teresa was waiting in the grand foyer. When she saw Caroline, bleeding and exhausted, the seventy-eight-year-old matriarch abandoned her cane and hurried forward.
“Caroline,” Teresa wept, throwing her arms around her former daughter-in-law.
“I’m sorry I stayed away, Teresa,” Caroline sobbed, hugging the older woman tightly.
“Hush now,” Teresa kissed her forehead. “You are home. You will always be family.”
Luca carried Caroline upstairs to a guest suite, where the family’s private doctor was already waiting to stitch her wound.
I stood in the foyer, the bloody silver key burning a hole in my apron pocket.
Ten minutes later, Luca came back downstairs.
He had changed out of his wet suit into a dark, tactical sweater and dark jeans. He looked every inch the ruthless syndicate boss the city feared.
But when he looked at me, his eyes softened entirely.
“Are you sure about this, Rachel?” he asked quietly, stepping close enough that I could smell the rain and expensive cologne on his skin.
“If Don Bellini releases that ledger, he’ll destroy your family,” I said, looking up into his dark eyes. “I won't let Vanessa win. Not after what she did to Sophie’s memory.”
Luca reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The touch sent a jolt of electricity straight to my heart.
“I will be right outside the vault,” he promised, his voice a low rumble. “If anything goes wrong, you drop to the floor, and I will tear the building apart to get you out.”
I nodded.
We drove to the First National Bank downtown at 9:00 AM the next morning.
The bank was a towering fortress of marble and glass, owned discreetly by a shell corporation loyal to the Bellini family.
I had transformed.
Teresa had dressed me in one of her own vintage Chanel suits, tailored perfectly to my frame. My hair was pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, and I wore a pair of oversized designer sunglasses.
I didn't look like a maid. I looked like a ruthless corporate assistant.
Luca waited in an idling black sedan across the street, an earpiece connecting him directly to a small microphone hidden in my collar.
“I’ve got eyes on the lobby,” Luca’s voice crackled in my ear, steadying my nerves. “Walk with purpose, Rachel. You own the room.”
I pushed through the heavy revolving doors.
The lobby was bustling. I walked straight past the teller lines and approached the private wealth management desk.
A severe-looking man in a grey suit looked up.
“Can I help you, miss?”
“I’m here on behalf of Vanessa Bellini,” I said, my voice cold, projecting an arrogant impatience I didn't actually feel. “I need access to Box 815.”
I placed the heavy silver key on his desk.
The man frowned, looking at the key.
“Miss Bellini usually comes herself,” he noted suspiciously.
“Miss Bellini is currently preparing for her wedding to Luca Moretti,” I snapped smoothly, leaning forward. “She doesn't have time to run errands. If you’d like to call her and interrupt her bridal fitting to confirm, be my guest. But I assure you, she won't appreciate the incompetence.”
The man paled slightly at the mention of Luca Moretti’s name.
“No, no, that won't be necessary,” he stammered, picking up the key. “Right this way.”
“Perfect,” Luca murmured in my ear. “You’re doing perfectly.”
The man led me down a mirrored hallway and used a biometric scanner to open the massive, two-foot-thick steel door of the underground vault.
We stepped into the cool, silent room lined with thousands of safe deposit boxes.
He located Box 815, inserted his master key, and gestured for me to use the silver key.
I turned it. The lock clicked heavily.
“I’ll wait outside,” the man said, bowing slightly before exiting and pulling the heavy steel gate shut behind him.
I was alone in the vault.
I pulled the long metal box out and set it on the private viewing table.
My hands shook as I opened the lid.
Resting on top was a thick, black leather-bound ledger. I flipped it open. It was filled with handwritten accounts, names of corrupt politicians, payoffs, and hit orders. It was the absolute destruction of the Moretti family on paper.
I grabbed it, shoving it into my oversized designer tote bag.
“I have it, Luca,” I whispered into my collar.
“Get out of there, Rachel. Walk exactly as you came in.”
But as I moved to close the metal box, I noticed something else resting at the bottom.
It was a thin manila folder.
Written on the tab in Vanessa’s elegant handwriting was a single name.
Rachel Morgan.
My breath caught in my throat.
Answer one: Vanessa wasn't just storing her father’s blackmail material.
Open two: Why did she have a file on me?
I opened the folder.
Inside was a background check. My mother’s hospital records. My apartment lease.
But beneath those was a printed email exchange between Vanessa and the surgeon who had operated on my mother’s hip.
I read the highlighted text.
Dr. Evans, ensure the complications require a second, highly expensive surgery. I need the girl desperate enough to accept any terms of employment. I will cover the medical board bribes.
My knees nearly gave out.
A reversal.
My mother’s botched first surgery wasn't an accident. Vanessa had orchestrated it. She had intentionally bankrupted my family just to force me into working at the Moretti estate, needing a spy she could completely control through medical debt.
Tears of pure, blinding rage blurred my vision.
Suddenly, a loud, metallic CLANG echoed through the vault.
I spun around.
The massive steel door of the vault had just slammed shut.
The heavy locking bolts ground into place with a sickening thud.
The lights flickered, and the air vents abruptly cut off.
“Rachel?” Luca’s voice cracked in my ear, suddenly panicked. “Rachel, the bank alarms just triggered. The vault is on lockdown. Can you hear me?”
I ran to the steel door and pounded on it.
“I’m locked in!” I shouted.
Before Luca could answer, a harsh, metallic voice echoed through the vault’s intercom system.

“Did you really think I wouldn't recognize the little maid playing dress-up, Rachel?”
It was Vanessa.
