Chapter 11 - The Morning After And The Mansion

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers faded into the distance as Luca’s armored SUV pulled back through the massive iron gates of the Moretti estate. The sky was just beginning to lighten, casting a pale, bruised purple glow over the manicured lawns.

It was over.

Carlo Bellini was in federal custody, caught red-handed with the ledger that would dismantle his entire criminal organization. Jason was on his way to the hospital under police guard, facing years in prison for extortion and theft. And Vanessa, stripped of her father’s protection and wealth, would be left with absolutely nothing.

Luca helped me out of the SUV. I was exhausted, my clothes smelling of gravel and cold night air, but I had never felt lighter in my entire life.

“Go upstairs, Rachel,” Luca said softly, walking me into the grand foyer. The house was quiet, the frantic energy of the night finally settling. “Get some sleep. We’ll talk when you wake up.”

I nodded, too tired to argue, and made my way up the sweeping mahogany staircase.

When I quietly unlocked the door to the second-floor guest suite, I found my mother asleep in the armchair, a blanket pulled up to her chin. In the center of the massive king-sized bed, Sophie was sprawled out, her little arm thrown over her stuffed rabbit, sleeping the deep, peaceful sleep of an innocent child.

I crawled into bed beside her, wrapping my arm around her tiny waist, and closed my eyes. For the first time in six years, I didn't worry about how I was going to pay the rent. I didn't worry about Vanessa’s threats or Jason’s debts.

I fell asleep knowing we were finally safe.

I woke up a few hours later to the sound of soft giggling.

I opened my eyes, blinking against the bright mid-morning sunlight streaming through the sheer curtains.

Sophie was sitting at the edge of the bed, wearing the oversized t-shirt I had dressed her in the night before. She was holding a large, beautifully wrapped box with a giant pink bow on top.

“Mommy, look!” Sophie beamed, bouncing slightly on the mattress. “The nice man brought me a present!”

I sat up, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. “What nice man, baby?”

“Mr. Luca,” my mother said, walking into the bedroom from the adjoining sitting area. She was holding a steaming mug of coffee, looking rested and completely at ease. “He knocked on the door about twenty minutes ago. Said he had something for the birthday girl.”

I looked at the box. It was far too large to be a toy.

“Open it, sweetheart,” I smiled, my heart warming at Luca’s incredible thoughtfulness.

Sophie eagerly tore the wrapping paper away and popped the lid off the box. She gasped, her eyes widening in absolute delight.

She pulled out a stunning, pale pink princess dress, complete with layers of tulle and delicate lace. Tucked beneath it was a small, glittering tiara and a pair of shiny silver shoes.

“It’s beautiful!” Sophie squealed, holding the dress up against her small frame. “Can I put it on right now?”

“Of course you can,” I laughed, helping her slip the dress over her head.

As I helped her adjust the tulle, a small, thick envelope fell out of the bottom of the box, landing softly on the duvet.

I picked it up. My name was written on the front in Luca’s sharp, elegant handwriting.

I opened the envelope and pulled out a single sheet of heavy, cream-colored stationery.

Rachel,I promised you I would protect your family. With Carlo arrested and my assets unfrozen, the Moretti family is officially legitimate. My past is buried. But my future means nothing if you aren't in it.Put on the dress I left in your closet, and meet me in the garden at noon.- Luca

My breath hitched. I looked up at my mother, handing her the note.

She read it, a wide, knowing smile spreading across her face. “Well, you better go check the closet, Rachel. It’s almost eleven-thirty.”

I scrambled out of bed and walked to the massive walk-in closet attached to the guest suite.

Hanging in the center, completely alone on the rack, was a breathtaking emerald-green silk dress. It was elegant, understated, and incredibly beautiful. Resting on the shelf above it was a pair of delicate black heels.

I showered quickly, the hot water washing away the grime and exhaustion of the terrifying night. I slipped into the green dress, letting the smooth silk fall perfectly against my skin. I left my hair down, letting the natural curls fall over my shoulders, and stepped into the heels.

When I walked back into the bedroom, Sophie gasped.

“Mommy, you look like a queen!” she cheered, spinning around in her own pink tulle dress.

“And you look like a princess,” I smiled, kissing her cheek.

I walked out of the guest suite, my heart fluttering with nervous anticipation. I descended the grand staircase, no longer a maid in a black uniform, but a woman walking toward the man she loved.

The house was completely transformed.

The staff had worked tirelessly through the morning. The remnants of the disastrous engagement party were completely gone. The grand foyer was pristine, smelling of fresh lemon polish and fresh flowers.

I walked toward the back of the house, pushing open the heavy glass doors that led to the sprawling, enclosed garden.

The garden was stunning. The white lilies Vanessa had demanded were gone, replaced by vibrant pink roses and lush greenery. Sunlight poured through the glass ceiling, illuminating the stone pathways and the trickling fountain in the center.

Standing by the fountain, waiting for me, was Luca.

He was wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly swept back. He looked powerful, handsome, and entirely at peace. When he saw me walking toward him in the green dress, his breath hitched audibly.

“You look breathtaking, Rachel,” Luca said softly, his dark eyes tracing every detail of my face.

“Thank you,” I smiled, feeling a blush rise to my cheeks.

He reached out and gently took my hands in his. His grip was warm and solid, grounding me instantly.

“The federal freeze on my accounts was lifted an hour ago,” Luca told me, a triumphant smile touching his lips. “Carlo is being indicted on RICO charges. Vanessa is being investigated as an accomplice. And Helen Carter signed a full confession this morning in exchange for a plea deal. The threat is completely gone.”

“It’s really over?” I asked, tears of sheer relief welling in my eyes.

“It’s over,” Luca promised, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand. “The Moretti name is clean. I am officially nothing more than a real estate developer.”

He took a step closer, entirely closing the distance between us.

“But I still have a vacancy for an executive assistant,” Luca murmured, his voice dropping into a rich, intimate register. “Someone fiercely loyal. Someone who isn't afraid to push me out of the way of a bullet.”

I laughed, a breathless, happy sound. “I think I can handle the job.”

“Good,” Luca smiled, his eyes shining with profound affection. “Because it comes with a lifetime contract.”

He leaned down and kissed me.

It wasn't a desperate kiss in the middle of a gunfight. It was slow, tender, and deeply passionate. It was a promise of safety, of love, and of a future I had never dared to dream of.

When we finally pulled apart, the sound of tiny, rapid footsteps echoed from the glass doors.

“Mommy! Mr. Luca!”

We turned. Sophie was running down the stone pathway in her pink princess dress, her tiara slightly askew, giggling with pure joy.

Luca smiled, dropping to one knee as Sophie barreled into him, wrapping her tiny arms around his neck. He hugged her tightly, lifting her effortlessly into his arms as he stood back up.

“Did you like the dress, principessa?” Luca asked, grinning at her.

“I love it!” Sophie beamed, resting her head comfortably against his shoulder. Then, she looked at him with wide, curious eyes. “Are you going to be my new daddy?”

I gasped, my face flushing scarlet. “Sophie!”

Luca threw his head back and laughed, a loud, genuine sound that echoed beautifully through the sunlit garden. He looked at me, his eyes filled with absolute adoration, then looked back at my daughter.

“If your mommy says yes,” Luca smiled warmly, “I would be the luckiest man in the world.”

Sophie cheered, throwing her arms in the air.

May you like

I walked over, wrapping my arms around both of them, resting my head against Luca’s chest. The nightmare was over. The secrets were buried.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't just surviving. I was home.
