Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

I tried to climb back up the fire escape, screaming his name, but my mother held me back, her arms wrapped around my waist with the desperate strength of a parent protecting her child.

"He told us to run, Hannah!" she cried, pulling me toward the street.

We stumbled into the glow of the streetlights just as a fleet of black SUVs screeched around the corner, blocking both ends of the alley.

I froze, terrified that Carmine's reinforcements had arrived.

But the doors flew open, and Daniel stepped out, followed by a dozen heavily armed Moretti guards.

"Hannah!" Daniel shouted, rushing toward us. "Where is Mr. Moretti?"

"He's inside!" I pointed at the burning third-floor window. "Carmine Bellini has him!"

Daniel didn't hesitate. He signaled his men, and they flooded into the apartment building like a tidal wave of vengeance.

Seconds stretched into agonizing minutes.

My mother held me tight, both of us praying against the sound of distant gunfire echoing down the brick walls.

Then, the front doors of the building burst open.

Luca walked out.

He was limping, his white shirt stained with soot and blood, but he was alive.

Behind him, Daniel and his men dragged Carmine Bellini out in zip-ties. The rival boss looked broken, his arrogance entirely shattered.

Luca walked straight over to me and my mother.

He didn't ask if we were okay. He just wrapped his uninjured arm around both of us, pulling us into a tight, grounding embrace.

"It's over," Luca whispered into my hair. "It's finally over."

Two weeks later.

The private dining room of Luca's favorite Italian restaurant was warm and loud, completely different from the cold, sterile engagement dinner we had survived.

The long table was filled with food, laughter, and family.

At the head of the table sat Rose. She wasn't wearing a uniform. She wore a beautiful emerald green dress Luca had bought her, and she was holding a sleeping baby Enzo against her chest.

Megan and David sat beside her, looking exhausted but blissfully happy.

My mother sat across from them, sharing stories about her childhood in Italy with Luca, who listened with rapt attention, soaking up the memories of the mother he had lost.

I stood near the back, pouring a glass of wine, smiling as I watched them.

The immediate threat of the Bellini family was gone. Carmine and Vanessa had been arrested on federal racketeering charges, thanks to a mountain of evidence Luca had handed over to the FBI. The Moretti syndicate was transitioning rapidly into legitimate real estate, leaving the blood and violence in the past.

Luca walked over to me, taking the wine bottle from my hand.

"You shouldn't be serving," he smiled. "You're a guest of honor."

"Old habits," I laughed, taking the glass he poured for me.

He clinked his glass against mine.

"I bought a new house," he said casually. "It's big. Too big for one person. It has a guest house in the back."

I looked at him.

"I want you and Sophia to live there," Luca offered, his eyes sincere. "And I want Rose, Megan, and David to take the east wing. I want my family under one roof."

I looked at the table.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't just a maid trying to pay rent. I was a cousin. I was safe.

"We'd love that," I said, tears pricking my eyes.

Luca smiled, a genuine, burden-free smile.

He walked to the head of the table and raised his glass.

"To family," Luca toasted, looking at every single person in the room. "The ones we find, and the ones we fight for."

"To family!" we all echoed.

It was the perfect happy ending.

But as the dinner wound down, Daniel quietly entered the room and walked up to Luca. He didn't look happy.

He handed Luca a small, velvet-wrapped box.

"Sir," Daniel whispered. "This was delivered to the new house this afternoon. It bypassed all security checkpoints."

Luca frowned, setting his wine glass down.

He unwrapped the velvet and opened the small wooden box.

I stepped closer, looking over his shoulder.

Inside the box was a heavy gold pocket watch.

But it wasn't Enzo's watch.

Luca picked it up, turning it over to read the engraving on the back.

He went completely pale.

"Luca?" I asked, a cold dread washing over my perfect night. "What does it say?"

May you like

Luca looked at me, his eyes wide with a terror I thought we had left behind.

"It belongs to my father," he whispered. "The watch he was buried with."
