Chapter 9 - THE LOCKED BOX

The dusty attic suddenly felt devoid of oxygen.

I read the letter again. And again. The faded ink blurred as my hands began to tremble violently.

With love, Caroline.

Caroline. Dominic’s wife.

The woman I had just risked my life to reunite with her family.

I tore through the rest of the letters in the wooden box. There were dozens of them. Secret meetings, desperate pleas, confessions of a forbidden affair between a young kindergarten teacher and a South Side mechanic.

My father.

My father didn't stumble upon a mafia hit twenty years ago. He wasn't an innocent bystander who found a bloody pocket watch.

He was murdered because he had an affair with the woman who was engaged to the heir of the Moretti empire.

And my brother, Leo… wasn't Victoria’s son.

He was Caroline’s son. And my half-brother.

I dropped the letters onto the attic floor, my mind reeling, trying to connect the shattered pieces of the last three weeks.

Dominic had told me Victoria gave birth to a rival boss’s child. But Victoria had lied to everyone. To the council. To Dominic. Probably even to herself. Victoria had orchestrated the adoption, yes—but she was covering up Caroline’s indiscretion to protect the Moretti family’s honor before Caroline married Dominic.

Victoria hadn't driven Caroline away four years ago because Caroline found ledgers.

Victoria drove Caroline away because Caroline wanted to tell Dominic the truth about her firstborn son.

I felt sick.

Everything we had fought for, the beautiful reunion in the hospital, the tears, the apologies—it was all built on the foundational lie that destroyed my father.

I packed the letters back into the wooden box. I shoved the box deep under the floorboards of the attic.

I couldn't tell my mother. It would break her heart to know her husband betrayed her.

I couldn't tell Leo. He was finally happy, focusing on his architecture degree, free from the shadow of the mafia.

And I couldn't tell Dominic. The man had given up his entire empire just to have his wife back. If he knew that his wife’s infidelity had caused the hit that stained his family’s legacy, it would destroy the fragile peace he had sacrificed everything to build.

Some secrets are meant to be exposed to the light.

And some secrets are meant to be buried deep in the dark, where they can never hurt anyone again.

I wiped the dust from my jeans, climbed down the attic stairs, and walked into the kitchen. My mother was humming at the stove, stirring a pot of soup. Leo was sitting at the table, sketching a blueprint, laughing at a joke playing on the small TV.

My family was whole. Safe.

And I would carry the weight of the truth alone, forever.

The End.
