Chapter 6 - THE BLOODY COAT

BANG.
The gunshot echoed like thunder in the cavernous warehouse.
But it wasn't Daniel’s gun that fired.
Daniel gasped, dropping his weapon as he collapsed to his knees, clutching his chest.
Behind him, standing in the doorway with a smoking pistol, was one of Luca’s youngest security guards. The kid had been loyal.
Luca slowly turned around, looking down at his former head of security bleeding out on the concrete.
“You sold out my family for a woman who would have killed you next,” Luca said coldly.
He didn't wait to watch Daniel die.
Luca turned to his men. “Clean this up. Put Michael and Vanessa in the holding cells at the compound. I’ll deal with them personally tomorrow.”
“Wait!” Vanessa screamed, crawling toward Luca, her expensive silk dress ruined with dirt and blood. “Luca, please! I only did it for my son! Leo needs money for his medical treatments! He has a heart condition!”
Luca stopped.
He looked down at the woman he had almost married.
“If your son was sick,” Luca said, his voice quiet but absolutely devastating, “you could have asked me for the money. I would have given you everything. But you tried to steal my sister's child. You tried to murder her husband. You are dead to me.”
He turned his back on her screams and walked over to where I was kneeling with my mother.
His hard, mafia exterior melted instantly.
He knelt beside us on the dirty floor. “Grace. Are you hurt?”
“No,” I whispered, wiping the tears from my face. “We’re okay.”
“Let’s get you out of here.”
Luca’s men escorted us to the waiting SUVs. We rushed straight to St. Jude’s Medical Center.
The hospital corridors were bright and sterile, a jarring contrast to the bloody warehouse.
We sat in the waiting room for two agonizing hours.
Marco, heavily bandaged and bruised, refused to sit down. He paced the floor outside the surgical wing, praying quietly in Italian.
Finally, the double doors swung open.
A tired-looking surgeon walked out, pulling down his mask.
Luca stood up immediately. “My sister?”
The doctor smiled.
“It was a difficult delivery, given the stress and the early term,” the surgeon said. “But Elena is a fighter. She’s stable, and she’s resting.”
Marco choked out a sob. “And the baby?”
“You have a beautiful, healthy baby boy,” the doctor smiled. “He’s small, so he’ll need to stay in the NICU for a few weeks, but he is breathing perfectly on his own.”
The relief in the room was palpable. It felt as though a massive, suffocating weight had been lifted off all our shoulders.
Marco rushed into the recovery room.
Luca stayed behind for a moment. He leaned against the hospital wall, running a hand over his tired face.
I stood up and walked over to him holding two cups of terrible hospital coffee.
I handed him one.
“Thank you,” he murmured, taking a sip.
“No,” I said softly. “Thank you. You saved my mother’s life tonight.”
Luca looked at me, his dark eyes studying my face under the fluorescent lights.
“You saved my sister’s life, Grace. You stood up to Vanessa when no one else would. You risked your life walking into that warehouse. You aren't just staff anymore. You’re family.”
My heart gave a strange, unexpected flutter.
Over the next few days, the nightmare unraveled completely.
Michael Grant and Vanessa Bellini were handed over to Luca’s underground contacts. They were stripped of every asset they owned. Luca ensured the money was placed into a secure trust for Leo, Vanessa’s young son, to pay for his medical care, proving that Luca was a man of honor, not just a man of violence.
The forged documents were destroyed.
Elena and Marco brought their baby boy home to the mansion three weeks later.
They named him Luca.
On the day the baby came home, the mansion was filled with light and laughter. The darkness Vanessa had brought into the house was completely gone.
I was in the kitchen, washing crystal glasses, smiling as I heard the baby crying softly in the living room.
Suddenly, Luca walked into the kitchen.
He was wearing a casual black sweater, looking relaxed and handsome.
He walked over to the sink and gently took the wet sponge out of my hand.
“You’re done working, Grace,” he said quietly.
I frowned, drying my hands. “Sir?”
“Your mother has been moved to the VIP suite at the Lakeside Memory Care Center, fully paid for in perpetuity,” Luca said. “Your brother’s tuition at NYU is covered until he graduates.”
I stared at him, my eyes filling with tears. “Mr. Moretti, I can't accept that. It’s too much.”
“It’s not enough,” Luca corrected, stepping closer.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, flat velvet box.
He opened it.
Inside was a delicate, breathtakingly beautiful diamond necklace.
“This belonged to my mother,” Luca said softly. “She told me to give it to the woman I wanted to spend my life with. The woman who proved her loyalty to this family.”
My breath caught in my throat.
“Luca...” I whispered, using his first name for the first time.
“I don't want you to be my maid, Grace,” he said, his eyes filled with raw, vulnerable emotion. “I want you to be my partner. My equal. If you’ll have me.”
He reached out and gently fastened the cool diamond chain around my neck.
I looked up at the powerful, dangerous man who had torn down a city to protect the people he loved, and I saw only the man I had fallen in love with.
I smiled, a real, radiant smile, and rested my hand against his chest.
“Yes,” I whispered.
Luca pulled me into his arms, kissing me deeply in the warm light of the kitchen.

The secrets were gone. The dignity of the family was restored. And for the first time in my life, I was exactly where I belonged.
