Chapter 2 - A LIE SPUN IN RED SILK

The silence in the dining room wasn't just heavy.

It was suffocating.

Twenty-eight guests sat paralyzed, their expensive champagne warming in their glasses.

Noah’s small hand was gripping his father’s jacket.

His sightless eyes were wide with a terror no ten-year-old should ever feel.

"Daddy... did you really promise?"

Luca didn’t look at the guests.

He didn’t look at Diane, the foundation director, who was practically shaking by her chair.

He only looked at Vanessa.

"Vanessa," Luca said.

His voice was terrifyingly calm.

"What promise is my son talking about?"

Vanessa’s red silk gown suddenly looked less like a triumph and more like a warning.

She swallowed hard.

"Luca, darling, he misunderstood. You know how children twist things."

"I didn't twist it," Noah whispered.

He pressed his face into Luca's shoulder.

"She told me you were too busy for a blind kid. She said the wedding was a fresh start. Without me."

The room plunged into an icy, absolute quiet.

Luca stood up slowly.

His tailored suit shifted perfectly across his broad shoulders.

"Mrs. Carter."

The head housekeeper stepped forward immediately from the shadows of the hallway.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Please escort our guests to the front hall. Their coats are in the cloakroom. The engagement dinner is over."

A shocked gasp rippled across the table.

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

"Luca, no! You can’t send them away. We haven't cut the cake!"

Luca finally looked directly at her.

"There is no cake. There is no wedding. You are leaving this house tonight."

Vanessa stumbled back, hitting her chair.

"You're ending our engagement over a misunderstanding? I was trying to help him!"

"You took away his cane," Luca said, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "You humiliated him. And you told him I didn't want him."

"I was preparing him for the real world!" Vanessa shouted, her facade finally cracking. "He's a burden, Luca! You're the head of the Moretti family, and you're tied down by a helpless child!"

The guests scrambled up, leaving their napkins and half-eaten meals behind, desperate to escape the wrath of Chicago’s most dangerous man.

Luca didn't raise his hand.

He didn't yell.

He simply stepped forward.

"Get out."

Vanessa burst into tears. Real, panicked tears.

She grabbed her expensive silver clutch from the table.

But her hands were shaking so badly that the clasp snapped open.

The contents spilled across the marble floor.

Lipstick. A compact mirror. Keys.

And a folded stack of thick, cream-colored papers.

"Leave it!" Vanessa shrieked as I instinctively knelt to help clean up the mess.

But I was closer.

My fingers brushed against the papers.

The heavy cardstock felt official.

I glanced at the bold black lettering at the top of the page.

St. Jude’s Residential Institute for the Blind.

Permanent Admissions Form.

My heart stopped.

I looked up at Vanessa.

She was staring at the papers in my hand, her eyes wide with absolute horror.

"Give me that," she hissed, lunging forward.

But Luca was faster.

He reached down and pulled the documents from my fingers.

He unfolded them.

I watched his dark eyes scan the page.

I watched the exact moment the mafia boss realized the woman he was going to marry had been planning to institutionalize his son.

"You filled out an admissions form," Luca said quietly.

Vanessa shook her head rapidly.

"It was just a brochure, Luca. Just in case!"

"There is a deposit receipt attached to it," Luca read. "For fifty thousand dollars."

Noah tightened his grip on his cane.

"Daddy?"

"It's okay, buddy," Luca said, though his voice vibrated with a lethal kind of rage.

He looked back at the paper.

"The admission date is for tomorrow morning."

The dining room was completely empty now, save for Luca, Noah, Vanessa, Diane, and me.

"Tomorrow?" I whispered, the word slipping out before I could stop it.

She wasn't going to wait until after the wedding.

She was going to send him away while Luca was at the office.

Vanessa fell to her knees.

"Luca, please. The institute is beautiful. He would be with his own kind!"

Luca stared at her like she was an insect.

"You thought you could put my son in a facility behind my back?"

"I had to!" she cried. "The foundation director agreed it was for the best!"

Luca slowly turned his gaze to Diane.

Diane shrank back against the wall.

"I... I only processed the paperwork," she stammered. "Miss Bellini provided the authorized signatures."

Luca frowned.

"Authorized signatures?"

"Yes," Diane said nervously. "To admit a minor, we need the signature of the primary legal guardian. Miss Bellini provided it."

Luca looked down at the document in his hand.

He flipped to the last page.

I saw him freeze.

His entire body went rigid.

"Who signed this?" Luca whispered.

Diane swallowed. "The primary guardian, sir. Like I said."

Luca slowly lowered the paper so I could see the bottom line.

The ink was fresh. Blue ink.

But the signature didn't belong to Luca.

And it didn't belong to Vanessa.

It was written in looping, elegant cursive.

Caroline Moretti.

My breath caught in my throat.

Because Caroline Moretti had been dead for three years.
