Chapter 5 - THE BROKEN PEARL BUTTONS

"Drop the gun, Luca!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. She pressed the barrel harder against my mother's temple.
My mother, Evelyn, looked terrified. Her light blue blouse—the one she had bought specifically for my graduation—was torn, three of the pearl buttons missing. But when she saw me standing in the doorway in my graduation gown, the fear in her eyes shifted into a desperate, pleading command.
"Natalie, run!" my mother yelled.
"Shut up!" Vanessa shrieked, yanking my mother backward by her hair.
"Mom!" I screamed, lunging forward.
Luca shot his arm out, catching me by the waist and hauling me back behind his broad shoulders. He didn't take his eyes off Vanessa. He didn't lower his weapon.
"You're out of your depth, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You came into a civilian’s home. You brought a gun. If you pull that trigger, my men will cut you to pieces before her body hits the floor."
"I don't care!" Vanessa cried, tears streaking her ruined makeup. "You humiliated me! You threw me out like garbage for a maid! My father built our empire, and you think you can just cancel an alliance because she cried over a stupid hat?"
"It wasn't about a hat," Luca said softly. "It was about you using my name to destroy an innocent girl's life."
"She isn't innocent!" Vanessa spat. "Her mother was going to ruin my family twenty-seven years ago! My father should have killed her when she was on the operating table!"
"But he didn't," a voice said from the doorway.
Vanessa’s eyes darted toward the sound.
Claire stepped into the apartment, her beige trench coat stained with grease from her car crash. She looked at Vanessa, the woman who had employed her, mentored her, and kept her as a stolen trophy.
"Claire?" my mother gasped. She stared at the woman who looked exactly like me, the shock momentarily overriding the gun against her head. "My baby... you're alive."
Claire’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice was remarkably steady. "You lied to me, Vanessa. Every day for three years. You looked me in the eye and told me I was lucky you found me."
Vanessa's grip on the gun faltered for a fraction of a second. "You are lucky! I gave you a career! I gave you money!"
"You gave me a cage," Claire said.
That microsecond of distraction was all Luca needed.
He didn't shoot Vanessa. He shot the massive man in the leather jacket, hitting him square in the kneecap.
The man roared in agony, collapsing to the floor.
The sound made Vanessa flinch. She instinctively pulled the gun away from my mother's head to aim at Luca.
In that same instant, Daniel stepped out from the shadows of the hallway. He tackled Vanessa around the waist, driving her hard into the kitchen cabinets.
The gun fired wildly into the ceiling, showering plaster over the linoleum floor.
I didn't wait for the dust to settle. I sprinted past Luca and dropped to my knees beside my mother.
"Mom!" I sobbed, pulling her into my arms. She was shaking violently, her hands gripping my graduation gown like a lifeline.
"I've got you," my mother cried, burying her face in my shoulder. "I'm okay, baby. I'm okay."
Claire slowly walked over and knelt beside us. My mother reached out a trembling hand, touching Claire's cheek as if verifying she wasn't a ghost.
"My beautiful girl," my mother whispered. "I thought you were gone."
Claire threw her arms around our mother, burying her face in her neck, crying for the twenty-seven years they had been apart. I wrapped my arms around both of them, the three of us forming a desperate, unbroken circle on the ruined apartment floor.
Across the room, Luca stood over Vanessa.
Daniel had pinned her to the ground, her hands secured behind her back with zip ties. She was struggling, spitting venom, looking up at Luca with pure hatred.
"You think this is over?" Vanessa snarled, blood dripping from a cut on her forehead. "My uncle runs the Bellini syndicate now. When he finds out what you did to me tonight, he will burn your estate to the ground."
Luca looked down at her, his expression colder than ice.
"He can try," Luca said. "But he’s going to have a hard time doing it from a federal penitentiary."
Vanessa stopped struggling. "What?"
Luca pulled his phone from his pocket. "When I found out you forged my name on a federal employment document, I didn't just fire you. I called my contacts in the prosecutor's office. I gave them the bank statements you left on my desk. The ones proving you’ve been laundering money through St. Catherine's for four years."
Vanessa’s face went completely pale. "You gave them my ledgers?"
"I gave them everything," Luca said. "The FBI is raiding the hospital right now. And Daniel isn't taking you to my basement, Vanessa. He’s taking you to the local precinct. You’re going to federal prison."
Vanessa opened her mouth to scream, but Daniel hauled her to her feet, dragging her out the door. The wounded hitman was dragged out right behind her.
The apartment suddenly felt incredibly quiet.
Luca holstered his weapon. He looked around the wrecked living room, then down at the three of us sitting on the floor.
His eyes softened entirely. He crouched down beside me.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, his hand gently touching my shoulder.
"No," I whispered, looking at my mother and my sister. "I have everything."
Luca nodded. He stood up. "Pack whatever you need. We're going back to the estate. It isn't safe here until the Bellini syndicate is completely dismantled."
We quickly packed two suitcases. My mother didn't argue. She just held Claire’s hand the entire time, terrified that if she let go, her newly found daughter would vanish again.
When we got back to the estate, it was nearly three in the morning.
Mrs. Carter was waiting in the foyer. She didn't look at me like a maid. She looked at me with profound respect. She guided my mother and Claire to the grand guest suites in the east wing, assuring them they were safe.
I stayed in the foyer with Luca.
He looked exhausted. The adrenaline had worn off, leaving deep shadows under his eyes.
"Thank you," I said softly, standing a few feet away from him. "For everything. You saved my family tonight."
Luca looked at me. In the dim light of the chandeliers, he didn't look like a mafia boss. He looked like a man who had finally found something worth protecting.
"I told you I’d clear your name, Natalie," he said quietly.
"You did a lot more than that," I said.
He took a step closer. His hand reached out, gently touching the edge of my graduation gown.
"You're a nurse now," Luca said, a faint smile touching his lips. "You're going to change the world."
"I have to pass my licensing exam first," I laughed nervously, my heart fluttering under his gaze.
"You will," he said with absolute certainty.
He leaned in, and for a heart-stopping moment, I thought he was going to kiss me. I closed my eyes, leaning slightly toward him.
But a sharp, buzzing sound interrupted us.
Luca’s phone was ringing.
He stepped back, running a hand through his hair, and pulled the phone from his pocket. He looked at the caller ID, and his expression instantly darkened.
"Yeah," Luca answered, his voice tight.
He listened for ten seconds. His jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth might crack.
"Understood," Luca said. "Lock it down."
He hung up the phone and looked at me. The warmth in his eyes was completely gone, replaced by a terrifying, cold panic.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"That was Daniel," Luca said, his voice grim. "He didn't make it to the police precinct."
My stomach dropped. "What happened?"
May you like
"The Bellinis intercepted the transport," Luca said. "Vanessa is gone."
And before I could ask what that meant, a massive explosion rocked the front gates of the estate, blowing the oak doors of the mansion wide open.
