Chapter 8 - THE GRANDFATHER CLOCK

The hallway was dimly lit, shadows stretching across the Persian runner.

Luca, David, Emma, and I stood in front of the massive antique grandfather clock.

It had stood at the end of the second-floor corridor for as long as I had worked there, ticking out a slow, rhythmic heartbeat that echoed through the house at night.

"I haven't opened this case in years," Luca murmured. "Caroline bought it at an estate sale."

He reached for the brass handle.

The heavy glass door swung open with a soft squeak.

The pendulum swung steadily, casting shifting shadows over the polished wood inside.

Luca reached a hand behind the brass weights, feeling along the dark, dusty back panel.

"Nothing," he said, frustration bleeding into his voice. "There's nothing here."

"Mommy didn't put things where they belong," Emma said softly.

Luca looked down at her. "What do you mean, baby?"

Emma reached past her father. Her small fingers traced the wooden trim near the bottom, right where the glass met the base.

She pressed hard against a decorative wooden rosette.

With a quiet click, a small, hidden panel popped open at the base of the clock.

Luca stared in shock. "I never knew that was there."

Inside the dark recess lay a small, velvet-covered book.

It wasn't a diary. It looked like an old ledger.

Luca pulled it out.

The velvet was worn, the edges of the pages yellowed. He opened it carefully.

I held my breath. David rested a hand on Luca’s shoulder.

Luca flipped through the first few pages. They were filled with Caroline's neat handwriting, but it wasn't personal thoughts.

It was a list of names.

Dates.

And amounts of money.

"What is this?" David asked, squinting at the page. "These look like payments."

Luca’s finger traced a line near the bottom of the second page.

December 12th. Vanessa Bellini. $5,000.

My stomach dropped.

"She was paying Vanessa?" I whispered.

Luca flipped the page.

January 14th. Vanessa Bellini. $5,000.

February 18th. Vanessa Bellini. $10,000.

"Why would Caroline pay her?" David demanded. "If Vanessa was stalking her, why give her money?"

Luca flipped to the back of the book.

A folded piece of paper fell out and drifted to the floor.

I knelt down and picked it up.

It was a photocopy of a birth certificate.

But it wasn't Emma’s.

I looked at the name.

Daniel Bellini.

Date of Birth: Six years ago.

I felt the blood leave my face.

"Mr. Moretti," I handed it to him, my hand trembling.

Luca stared at the paper.

He read the mother’s name. Vanessa Bellini.

Then he read the father’s name.

The silence in the hallway was so absolute it felt like the air had been sucked out.

Luca’s eyes widened.

He staggered back a step, hitting the wall.

"No," he whispered.

"Luca?" David asked, grabbing the paper. "What is it?"

David read the certificate and swore under his breath.

The father’s name listed on the birth certificate was Luca Moretti.

"I didn't," Luca choked out, looking at me, then at David. "I swear to God, David. I have never touched that woman in my life. I met her two years ago. I loved Caroline with my whole soul."

"I believe you," David said grimly. "Look at the signature on the father’s line."

It was a blatant forgery. It looked nothing like Luca’s signature.

"She faked a birth certificate," I realized aloud. "She had a child and put your name on it to extort your wife."

Luca looked back at the ledger.

"Caroline believed her," he whispered, his voice cracking. "Vanessa must have confronted her while she was sick. She told Caroline I had an affair and produced a child. She blackmailed my dying wife."

Tears streamed down Luca’s face.

"Caroline sold the emerald necklace," Luca sobbed, dropping the book. "She didn't lose it. She didn't sell it for treatments. She gave it to Vanessa to keep her quiet. To protect me."

The cruelty of it was unfathomable.

Vanessa hadn't just stalked them. She had mentally tortured a dying woman, draining her of her heirlooms and money, making Caroline believe her husband had betrayed her in her final months.

Emma tugged on Luca’s sleeve.

"Daddy? Why are you crying?"

Luca dropped to his knees and pulled Emma into his chest, burying his face in her hair.

"I'm so sorry," he wept. "I didn't know, baby. I didn't know what Mommy was going through."

Emma patted his back. "Mommy wasn't mad at you, Daddy."

Luca pulled back, wiping his eyes. "What?"

Emma reached into her small pocket.

"She told me to give you this when the bad lady was gone."

May you like

Emma opened her hand.

Resting in her small palm was a gold pocket watch.
