Chapter 12 - THE BRASS BELL

The words hit me like a physical blow.
Half-sister.
The room spun. I looked at Luca. The mafia boss who had protected me, who had fought for my mother, who had treated me with a strange, inexplicable loyalty since the day I arrived.
Luca’s gun lowered slightly. His face was unreadable.
"You're lying," Luca said, but his voice lacked conviction.
"Am I?" Arthur asked, tossing the real silver charm bracelet onto a wooden crate. "Look at the charms, Luca. The star. The moon. The bell."
Luca stared at the bracelet.
"My father's crest," Luca whispered.
"He gave it to her when she was born," Arthur said. "He loved her mother. But the syndicate wouldn't allow a boss to have an illegitimate child with a civilian. Vincent Bellini found out. He threatened to expose the child unless your father paid him."
"So my father faked the kitchen fire to pay him off," Luca realized.
"Yes," Arthur nodded. "He hid the ledger in New York under Megan's name, knowing Vincent could never access it without her. And he asked me to watch over her."
"By making her a maid in my house?" Luca yelled, his anger returning.
"By keeping her close to the only man who could protect her if Vincent ever came back," Arthur corrected. "You."
The metal door behind us groaned. The blowtorch was almost through the hinges.
"Why are your men trying to kill us, Arthur?" I asked, tears streaming down my face.
"They aren't trying to kill you," Arthur said gently. "They are trying to escort you. Vincent is dead. The Chicago syndicate is in chaos. Whoever holds the New York ledger controls the entire East Coast."
Arthur looked at Luca.
"Your father built the table, Luca. But he wanted Megan to sit at it."
Arthur stepped forward and handed me the brass service bell.
"The restaurant is yours, Megan. The legitimate business. The safe life your mother wanted for you. But the ledger... the power... you have to choose whether to take it."
The heavy iron door finally gave way, crashing to the floor.
A dozen armed men poured into the baggage car.
They didn't aim their weapons at us.
They lowered them, looking at Arthur.
Arthur looked at me.
"It's time to decide, Megan. Are you a maid? Or are you a Moretti?"
I looked at the brass bell in my hands. The bell that had started everything.
I looked at Luca. My brother.
He nodded slowly. He would support whatever I chose.
I thought about the years of scraping by. The fear of Vincent Bellini. The wealthy guests who had treated me like dirt at the engagement dinner.
I set the brass bell down on the wooden crate.
I picked up the silver charm bracelet.
I clasped it around my wrist.
"Call the men off the train, Arthur," I said, my voice steady and cold. "We're going to New York. And we're opening that lockbox."
Arthur smiled, bowing his head slightly.
"Yes, Miss Moretti."
As the train slowly roared back to life, heading toward the city lights, I stood beside Luca.

The past was burned. The debt was paid.
And the real family business was just beginning.
