Chapter 7 - THE SECRET HIDDEN INSIDE THE SEWING SHOP

Luca unfolded the fragile, yellowed paper.

The dining room was so quiet I could hear the grandfather clock ticking in the hallway. Even the guests, seasoned men and women of the Chicago underworld, watched with bated breath as their boss read a message from the grave.

As Luca read, his dark eyes filled with tears. A single drop escaped, tracking down his rigid jawline.

He lowered the letter.

"Marco," Luca said, his voice cracking. "Pour everyone a drink. Now."

Marco immediately signaled the waitstaff. Glasses of aged whiskey were poured and distributed in silence. I stood by the service table, watching.

Luca took a glass. He turned to Helen.

"Mrs. Bellini. Helen," Luca said softly. "This letter is from my father. Written hours before he died."

Helen pressed a hand to her mouth.

"He wrote it in the back room of your husband's tailor shop, while Arthur was standing guard at the front door," Luca explained, his voice echoing in the large room. "My father knew he wasn't going to make it out alive. He was bleeding too heavily. But he had the ledger, and he knew if the Russians found it, our family would be slaughtered."

Luca stepped closer to Helen.

"He writes here... that Arthur Bellini, a man he had never met before that night, refused to take money to help him. Arthur told my father that he had a beautiful wife at home, and he couldn't imagine leaving her a widow."

Helen let out a soft sob. "Arthur..."

"My father gave Arthur the deed to the building, to ensure you would always be provided for," Luca continued. "And he gave Arthur the family ledger, begging him to hide it in the walls of the shop, where the Russians would never look."

Luca looked down at the letter, his thumb tracing his father's handwriting.

"But the letter says something else," Luca whispered. "It says that Arthur knew the Russians were coming down the street. And Arthur knew that if they found both of them, they would tear the shop apart and find the ledger."

Helen shook her head, not understanding. "So... what did Arthur do?"

"Arthur took my father’s coat," Luca said, tears finally falling freely. "He put on my father's fedora. And he walked out the front door of the shop, drawing the Russians away down the alley."

The truth hit the room like a physical blow.

Arthur Bellini hadn't just hidden Lorenzo Moretti. He had disguised himself as the mafia boss and sacrificed his own life to lead the hitmen away from the ledger, saving the Moretti family empire.

Helen collapsed into a chair, weeping uncontrollably. For thirty years, she believed she was the widow of a failed tailor with a bad heart. She had endured Vanessa's cruel taunts about her father's cowardice.

But Arthur was a king among men. A hero of absolute, staggering courage.

"He died for us," Luca said, raising his glass of whiskey. He turned to his men. "Arthur Bellini died so that we could live! So that this family could stand in this room today!"

Every man in the room raised their glass high.

"To Arthur Bellini!" they roared in unison.

They drank.

Luca walked over to Helen. He knelt in front of her chair, taking her rough, needle-scarred hands in his.

"Helen," Luca swore, his voice trembling with fierce loyalty. "From this night until the end of my days, you are under the protection of the Moretti family. Your shop will be rebuilt. It will be a palace. You will never want for anything. You are family."

Helen cried, squeezing his hands. "Thank you. Oh, thank you. I just wish... I wish he had told me."

"He wanted to protect you from our world," Luca said gently.

Then, Luca stood up and turned to me.

"Megan."

I jumped, wiping tears from my own eyes. "Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"You risked your life tonight by speaking up against Vanessa," Luca said, his dark eyes piercing mine. "You knew she could destroy you, but you protected my son, and you protected my family's legacy."

I swallowed hard. "It was the right thing to do, sir."

"Your mother," Luca said. "She is in Chicago General, correct? Recovering from surgery?"

My heart skipped a beat. "Yes, sir."

"Marco," Luca said without looking away from me. "Call the hospital. Move Mrs. Collins to the VIP private wing. Bring in the best private specialists. The Moretti estate will cover all her medical bills, entirely, forever."

I gasped, covering my mouth as a sob tore from my throat. "Mr. Moretti... I can't... that's too much..."

"It's not a gift, Megan. It's a promotion," Luca smiled warmly. "I need a head manager for this household. Someone with integrity. And Leo needs a permanent guardian who won't lock him in closets. The job is yours, with triple your current salary. If you want it."

I looked over at Leo. The little boy was standing next to Helen, holding his perfectly repaired stuffed dog. He looked at me and gave a small, hopeful smile.

"I want it, sir," I cried, nodding my head. "Thank you."

Everything was perfect. The villains were punished. The heroes were rewarded. The secrets were in the light.

I thought the night was finally over.

But then Luca looked down at the letter in his hand again. He turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

May you like

Luca frowned, reading the back of the page. His breath hitched.

"Helen," Luca said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Where are your mother's golden scissors?"
