Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING IN THE GOLD PEN

The silence in the foyer was shattered by the ringing of Daniel's security phone.
Daniel answered it, his face pale. He listened for three seconds before dropping the phone.
"Boss," Daniel choked out. "The safe house in Oak Park. It just exploded. Total structural collapse."
My knees nearly gave out.
If Luca hadn't brought Elena and the kids to the warehouse... if he had left them at the safe house like he originally planned... they would all be dead.
"Salvatore tied up the loose ends," Luca said, his voice a deadly, quiet hiss. "He thinks you're dead, Elena. He thinks he won."
"He's fleeing," Daniel said, wincing as he held his wounded side. "With the foundation's billions, he doesn't need the Chicago syndicate anymore. He can disappear anywhere in the world."
"Not if I have the routing numbers," Caleb said fiercely, holding up the USB drive. "I can reverse the hack. I can freeze the Cayman accounts and bounce the funds back to the foundation."
Luca looked at the fifteen-year-old boy. "Can you do it from here?"
"No," Caleb shook his head. "Vanessa's laptop has a hardline encryption key. When I unplugged the router, the laptop locked down. The only way to access the network now is through the foundation's main server."
"Which is in the basement of Willow Creek," I realized, the horror washing over me.
"The building is on fire, Rachel," Elena panicked, grabbing Caleb's arm. "You can't go back there!"
"The fire department put out the top floors," Daniel said, checking his radio. "But the basement is a reinforced concrete vault. The fire didn't breach it. But the fire marshals won't let anyone inside."
"I don't need their permission," Luca said coldly.
He turned to Caleb. "If I get you to the server room, how long will it take you to freeze the accounts?"
"Five minutes," Caleb promised.
"I'm coming too," I said instantly.
"No, Rachel," Luca argued. "It's too dangerous."
"You need someone to hold the perimeter while you protect Caleb," I shot back. "Daniel is shot. He can't fight. You need me."
Luca looked at my determined face, then nodded once. "Daniel, stay here and guard Elena and Lucy. Lock the estate down."
We rushed to the armored SUV.
The drive back to Willow Creek was a blur of adrenaline.
The street was cordoned off with yellow police tape. Two fire engines were still spraying water onto the smoldering upper floors.
Luca parked the SUV in the back alley, hidden from the police barricades.
"The basement service entrance is through the boiler room," Luca whispered, leading the way.
He kicked the heavy steel door open.
The basement was pitch black, smelling of damp ash and chemical smoke. We used the flashlights on our phones to navigate the concrete maze.
We reached the massive steel vault door.
Luca punched in a six-digit code. The heavy bolts retracted with a clunk, and the door swung open.
The server room was pristine, untouched by the fire, humming with air conditioning and rows of blinking black towers.
Caleb hobbled over to the main terminal, plugging his USB drive into the console. His fingers flew across the keyboard with astonishing speed.
"I'm in," Caleb muttered, his eyes glued to the screen. "The Cayman accounts are holding the funds. I'm initiating the freeze protocol."
"Hurry," Luca urged, his gun drawn, watching the doorway.
A progress bar appeared on the screen. 10%... 20%...
"Come on, Caleb," I whispered.
Suddenly, a slow, mocking handclap echoed from the dark hallway outside the vault.
We all froze.
From the shadows, Salvatore Bellini stepped into the doorway.
He wasn't wearing his tailored suit anymore. He was wearing a dark trench coat, holding a suppressed pistol. Standing behind him was Vanessa, looking terrified and clutching a heavy duffel bag.
"I have to admit, Luca," Salvatore smiled, aiming his gun at Caleb’s head. "I didn't expect the cripple to figure out the encryption."
Luca stepped in front of Caleb, shielding the boy with his body, aiming his own weapon at Salvatore.
"It's over, Salvatore," Luca said smoothly. "My uncle has your men. You have no one."
"I have two billion dollars in untraceable funds," Salvatore laughed. "And a private jet waiting at O'Hare. Step away from the console, boy."
Caleb didn't stop typing. The progress bar hit 60%.
"I said step away!" Salvatore shouted, cocking the hammer of his gun.
"Don't do it, Caleb," Luca ordered gently. "He's not going to shoot. If he shoots, the terminal locks out permanently."
Salvatore’s eyes narrowed. "You think I won't kill a child?"
"I know you will," Luca said. "But you love money more."
The tension in the room was suffocating.
Vanessa peeked out from behind her father. She looked at me, then at Luca.
"Dad," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling. "Let's just go. The jet is waiting."
"Shut up, Vanessa," Salvatore snapped.
He looked at Luca.
"I'm going to make you a deal, son," Salvatore sneered. He reached into his coat and pulled out a heavy, ornate gold pen. He tossed it onto the desk next to the keyboard.
"That is a retinal-scanned authorization drive," Salvatore said. "Plug it in, authorize the transfer to complete, and I'll walk away. You keep your life. You keep the boy. I take the money."
"And if I don't?" Luca asked.
Salvatore smiled coldly. "Then I kill the boy, I kill the girl, and I spend the rest of my life hunting Elena. Your choice, philanthropist."
Luca stared at the gold pen.
He slowly lowered his gun.
"Fine," Luca said.
"Mr. Moretti, no!" Caleb cried.
"Do it, Caleb," Luca ordered quietly.
Caleb hesitated, tears in his eyes, but he picked up the gold pen. He twisted the top, revealing a USB connector, and plugged it into the terminal.
The screen flashed red. AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
Luca leaned forward, letting the retinal scanner read his eye.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Salvatore laughed triumphantly. "You always were soft, Luca."
He backed out of the vault, grabbing Vanessa's arm. "Enjoy the ashes of your charity."
They disappeared into the dark hallway, their footsteps fading toward the alley.
Caleb slumped against the desk, sobbing. "I'm sorry, Mr. Moretti. I failed."
"No, you didn't, son," Luca said gently, picking up the gold pen from the desk.
I frowned, confused. "But he has the money, Luca. He's gone."
Luca turned to me, a small, dangerous smile playing on his lips.
"He has the money," Luca agreed. "But he just plugged a federal tracking beacon directly into his own offshore accounts."
May you like
He twisted the gold pen open, revealing not just a USB drive, but a tiny, blinking red light.
"My father gave Vanessa the ledger," Luca whispered. "But he gave me the pen."
