Chapter 11 - THE FOOTSTEPS IN THE OUTFIELD

"Daddy!" Caleb screamed, his voice carrying over the shocked gasps of the crowd.

The man in the groundskeeper uniform had vaulted the low chain-link fence by the dugout and was dragging Caleb toward a rusted silver sedan parked illegally on the grass.

Everything happened in a blur of terrifying speed.

Luca didn't shout. He didn't hesitate. He launched himself over the metal bleacher railing, his boots hitting the dirt with a heavy thud. He sprinted across the infield faster than I had ever seen a man move, his eyes locked onto his son.

"Call the police!" Coach Robert yelled, pulling his phone out.

I didn't wait. I scrambled down the bleachers, my heart pounding in my throat, and sprinted after Luca.

The kidnapper reached the silver car, yanking the back door open. He tried to shove Caleb inside, but the eleven-year-old boy was fighting like a wildcat, using his brand-new catcher’s mitt to smack the man repeatedly in the face.

"Let go of me!" Caleb yelled, kicking the man’s shin.

The man cursed, raising his hand to strike the boy.

He never got the chance.

Luca hit the kidnapper like a freight train. The impact sent both men crashing against the side of the car, shattering the side mirror. Caleb fell safely onto the grass, rolling away from the scuffle.

"Caleb!" I screamed, running toward him. I dropped to my knees, pulling the boy into my arms and shielding him with my body.

Luca grabbed the man by the collar of his uniform, pinning him violently against the hood of the car. The kidnapper struggled, reaching for a weapon in his waistband, but Luca was a force of pure, lethal rage. He twisted the man’s arm, forcing him to drop a silver switchblade onto the grass.

"Who sent you?" Luca roared, pressing his forearm against the man's throat.

The man gasped for air, his eyes wide with panic. "The old man! Arthur Bellini!"

Luca’s expression turned murderous. "Arthur is in a federal penitentiary."

"He... he made a phone call!" the man choked out. "When he heard Dominic failed last night... he called a favor! He said if the Morettis took his family down, he was going to take your son!"

Luca pulled the man off the hood and threw him onto the ground. Two off-duty police officers who had been watching the game rushed over, tackling the kidnapper and snapping handcuffs onto his wrists.

Luca didn't look back at the man. He immediately turned and dropped to his knees beside Caleb and me.

He was breathing heavily, his hands shaking as he reached out and touched his son's face.

"Are you hurt?" Luca asked, his voice raw with panic. "Buddy, did he hurt you?"

Caleb sniffled, wiping dirt from his cheek. He held up his new leather mitt. "No, Daddy. I hit him with the glove you gave me. Just like you taught me to protect the plate."

A choked sob escaped Luca’s chest. He pulled Caleb into a desperate, crushing hug, burying his face in the boy’s neck.

I sat back on the grass, my hands trembling. The reality of the morning was crashing down on me. My father’s secret. The gold watch. The terrifying realization that this world of violence would always find a way to bleed into our lives.

Luca pulled back from Caleb, resting his forehead against his son’s. "You did so good, buddy. You were so brave."

He looked up at me. His dark eyes were filled with a profound, overwhelming gratitude. He reached out and grabbed my hand, intertwining his fingers with mine. His grip was warm, strong, and anchoring.

"We're going home," Luca said firmly. "All of us."

Within an hour, the estate was locked down. The perimeter was secured by thirty armed men. Arthur Bellini’s cell was raided by federal agents based on an anonymous tip Luca provided, ensuring the old man would never make a phone call again.

The threat was permanently neutralized.

The mansion, which had felt so cold and empty the night before, suddenly felt different. It felt safe.

That evening, I was in the kitchen, making hot chocolate. Caleb was sitting at the island, swinging his legs, completely unbothered by the morning's chaos. Children were incredibly resilient when they knew they were loved.

Luca walked into the kitchen. He had showered and changed into a soft black sweater and dark jeans. He looked exhausted, but the heavy burden that had always rested on his shoulders seemed lighter.

He walked over to Caleb, kissing the top of his head. "Finish your hot chocolate, buddy. It’s almost bedtime."

Caleb nodded, taking a sip. Then, he slid off the stool and picked up a piece of paper from the counter.

He walked over to me and held it up.

"Miss Rachel?" Caleb asked shyly.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"I drew this for you."

I wiped my hands on a towel and took the paper. It was a drawing done in bright crayons.

It was a picture of the three of us standing on the baseball field. Caleb in his blue jersey, Luca in his t-shirt, and me standing between them, holding their hands. Above us, Caleb had drawn a massive, bright yellow sun.

And at the bottom, in messy eleven-year-old handwriting, he had written: Our Family.

Tears pricked my eyes. I looked down at Caleb, completely overwhelmed.

Then, Caleb looked up at his dad.

"Daddy?" Caleb asked, his voice echoing in the quiet kitchen. "Can Miss Rachel stay with us forever?"
