Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION ON THE BALCONY

The courtyard of the Moretti estate was a chaotic sea of armed men, flashing headlights, and torrential rain.

Luca knelt on the stone balcony, his hands bound behind his back. Blood trickled down the side of his face from a deep cut above his eyebrow. He looked exhausted, but his dark eyes were locked onto the courtyard below, searching the crowd.

When he saw me step out of the armored SUV with Mia and his mother, a visible wave of relief washed over his bloody face. He didn't care about the gun to his head. He only cared that we were safe.

Vanessa saw us too. Her eyes widened in fury.

"Where is my father?!" Vanessa screamed from the balcony, her voice cracking over the storm. "Bring him out, or I put a bullet in Luca’s brain!"

Daniel yanked the door of the SUV open and dragged Carlo Bellini out into the rain. The silver-haired patriarch stumbled, falling to his knees in the wet gravel.

"Father!" Vanessa cried out.

"Vanessa, listen to me," Carlo shouted back, his usual arrogance replaced by pure panic. "They have the girl. They have Rosa. It’s over! Put the gun down and make a deal!"

Vanessa’s expression twisted into something utterly unhinged. She tightened her grip on the gun pressed against Luca’s head.

"A deal?" she laughed hysterically. "There is no deal! They ruined everything! I was supposed to be the Queen of this city! I gave up my own flesh and blood to protect our name, and you let a housemaid destroy it!"

"Vanessa, please!" Michael’s voice suddenly echoed through the courtyard.

I turned around. Paramedics were lifting a stretcher out of an ambulance that had just pulled through the gates. Michael Bellini was lying on it, pale and bleeding heavily from the gunshot wound his sister had given him at the airport, but he was alive.

"Don't do this, Vanessa," Michael pleaded weakly. "You don't want to kill Luca. You love him."

"I loved the power he gave me!" Vanessa screamed back.

Luca slowly lifted his head. He didn't look afraid. He looked at Vanessa with cold, absolute pity.

"You never loved anything, Vanessa," Luca said softly, his deep voice carrying over the silence of the courtyard. "Not me. Not your father. And certainly not your daughter."

Vanessa flinched. The mention of Mia broke through her manic rage for a fraction of a second. She looked down at the little girl standing next to me in the oversized red coat.

Mia stared up at her mother. She didn't cry. She didn't hide.

"You’re the bad lady," Mia said clearly, her small voice cutting through the storm.

Vanessa’s hand shook. The gun wavered against Luca’s temple.

"I had to do it," Vanessa whispered, almost to herself. "I had to give you away. The family needed the merger. I didn't have a choice."

"Yes, you did," Luca said firmly. "You chose power over your own child. And now, you have nothing."

Vanessa’s eyes darkened. The brief moment of maternal guilt vanished, replaced by pure venom.

"If I can't have the empire," Vanessa hissed, cocking the hammer of the gun. "Neither can you."

She moved her finger to the trigger.

"No!" I screamed.

I didn't think. I raised my good hand high in the air.

Clutched tightly in my fist was the heavy silver rosary that belonged to Carlo Bellini. The same rosary he had used to condemn my father.

"Vanessa, wait!" I shouted. "Look at this!"

Vanessa hesitated, her eyes dropping to the silver beads glinting in the headlights.

"Do you know what this is?" I yelled, taking a step forward. "It’s your father’s rosary! He dropped it twenty years ago when he murdered my father. He murdered the man who tried to save your daughter!"

Vanessa frowned, looking down at Carlo. "What is she talking about?"

Carlo’s face went pale. "Don't listen to her, Vanessa! Shoot him!"

"Your father didn't send Mia away to protect you!" I shouted, the pieces of the ultimate betrayal finally clicking together in my mind. "He didn't care about the wedding! He sent the baby away to blackmail you!"

Vanessa froze. "Blackmail me?"

"Yes!" Rosa stepped forward, her voice ringing with authority. "Carlo knew that if he kept your illegitimate child alive, he could hold her over your head forever! He planned to use Mia to control you once you married Luca and took over the syndicate!"

Vanessa stared at her father. The realization hit her like a physical blow. The man she had worshipped, the man she had shot her own brother for, had been playing her all along.

"Is it true?" Vanessa whispered, her gun lowering slightly. "Father, is it true?"

Carlo couldn't look her in the eye. He looked down at the wet gravel.

"You arrogant little girl," Carlo sneered, finally dropping the loving father act. "You thought you were smart enough to run this city? You were nothing but a pawn. I built the Bellini empire. You were just a pretty face to merge the accounts."

Vanessa’s face crumpled. Her entire reality, her entire justification for her monstrous actions, shattered in an instant.

She let out a guttural scream of pure rage.

She turned the gun away from Luca, aiming it down at the courtyard, straight at her own father.

But as she fired, the heavy oak doors of the balcony burst open behind her.

Antonio Moretti—Luca’s father—stepped out onto the balcony. He held his heavy silver cane in both hands like a baseball bat.

He didn't say a word. He swung the heavy silver handle directly into the back of Vanessa’s knees.

Vanessa screamed, her shot going wide, shattering the windshield of a nearby SUV. She collapsed onto the stone balcony, dropping the weapon.

Luca instantly swept his legs out, kicking the gun off the edge of the balcony before standing up. He pinned Vanessa to the ground with his boot, his hands still tied behind his back.

"Daniel!" Luca roared.

The security team swarmed the courtyard. They grabbed Carlo, dragging him away as he shouted curses into the rain. Two men rushed up to the balcony, zip-tying Vanessa and hauling her to her feet.

It was over.

The Bellini empire was destroyed.

Luca walked slowly down the grand staircase into the courtyard. His men cut the ties on his wrists.

He didn't look at his father. He didn't look at his men.

May you like

He walked straight toward me.
