Chapter 9 - THE RECKONING

"Don't move a muscle, Vanessa."

Marco's voice was a low, terrifying growl. He looked half-dead, his shirt soaked with dark blood, but his hand holding the revolver was perfectly steady.

Vanessa stared up at him, her face completely drained of color.

"Marco?" she gasped, scrambling backward on the wet tarmac. "You're supposed to be dead!"

"I'm harder to kill than that," Marco spat, pressing the barrel of the gun against her forehead.

Luca didn't waste a second.

He sprinted past them and scooped Emma into his arms.

"I've got you, baby," Luca wept, burying his face in his daughter's wet hair. "I've got you. You're safe."

Emma clung to his neck, sobbing uncontrollably. "She tried to take Pip, Daddy. She tried to take him."

"She's never taking anything from you again," Luca promised fiercely.

I stumbled out of the wrecked Porsche, my knees trembling so badly I could barely stand.

Luca looked up and saw me. He walked over, still holding Emma, and wrapped his free arm around my shoulders, pulling me into a crushing embrace.

"You saved her," he whispered against my hair, his voice thick with emotion. "You saved my entire world, Rachel."

I closed my eyes, letting the tears fall freely. For the first time all night, I felt like I could breathe.

Suddenly, the wail of police sirens pierced the sound of the jet engines.

Red and blue lights flooded the airstrip. Dozens of police cruisers crashed through the broken fence, completely surrounding the plane.

Marco slowly lowered his gun and raised his free hand in surrender, groaning as the pain in his side caught up to him.

Officers swarmed the tarmac, tackling Vanessa's remaining guards and aggressively cuffing Vanessa herself.

"Get your hands off me!" Vanessa shrieked, thrashing against the officers. "I am Vanessa Bellini! My lawyers will bury you!"

A tall detective in a trench coat walked over, ignoring her screaming.

He looked at Luca. "Mr. Moretti. We received an anonymous audio file twenty minutes ago. A recording of a woman orchestrating a murder-for-hire and the kidnapping of a minor."

The detective looked down at Vanessa. "I think your lawyers are going to be very busy, Ms. Bellini."

Vanessa stopped screaming. She looked at Marco, realizing he had transmitted the audio from the gold pocket watch directly to the police.

Her face twisted in absolute hatred as they dragged her into the back of a squad car.

Paramedics rushed onto the tarmac, loading Marco onto a stretcher.

Luca walked over to his brother, holding Emma tightly.

"You came back," Luca said quietly, staring at the man he had been at war with for years.

Marco offered a weak, pained smile. "I'm the older brother, Luca. I couldn't let some gold-digger take my city."

Luca reached out and gripped Marco's hand tightly. "Thank you."

Marco nodded, his eyes drifting to me. "Take care of the maid, Luca. She's got more guts than half your crew."

The paramedics loaded Marco into the ambulance and sped away.

The rain finally began to stop. The dark clouds parted, revealing the faint, bruised light of early dawn.

We sat in the back of a police cruiser, wrapped in foil emergency blankets.

Emma was fast asleep against Luca's chest, the small kitten carrier resting safely on her lap.

Luca looked at me. His face was battered, his suit ruined, but the cold, untouchable Mafia boss was completely gone.

"I'm sorry," Luca said softly.

I looked up. "For what?"

"For believing her. For firing you. For making you think you had to fight this alone."

I shook my head. "You were protecting your daughter. That's all that matters."

Luca reached over and gently took my hand. His thumb brushed against my bruised knuckles.

"Your mother," Luca said. "She's safe. I had my loyal men move her to a private penthouse downtown three hours ago. She has round-the-clock medical care. Vanessa's men never got near her."

A sob of pure relief escaped my throat. I squeezed his hand back, unable to find the words to thank him.

"What happens now?" I whispered.

Luca looked out the window at the breaking dawn.

"Now," he said firmly. "I dismantle the empire my father built. I turn the business legitimate. And I finally bring my wife home."

Two days later, the mansion was entirely transformed.

The dark, oppressive energy that Vanessa had brought into the house was gone. The windows were open, letting in the bright spring sunshine.

Emma was sitting on the living room floor, surrounded by toys.

And next to her, looking healthy and content, was the calico mother cat, nursing her four kittens.

Daniel the grounds manager had brought the other three kittens back from the rescue, completely unharmed.

I stood in the doorway, watching them, smiling warmly.

I wasn't wearing a maid's uniform anymore. I was wearing comfortable jeans and a sweater. Luca had refused to let me work another day as a servant. He had promoted me to Emma's personal governess, with a salary that would ensure my mother never had to worry about rent again.

The front door opened.

Luca walked in. He looked exhausted, having spent the last forty-eight hours dealing with lawyers, police, and dismantling his criminal syndicates.

But when he saw Emma playing with the kittens, a genuine, beautiful smile spread across his face.

He walked over and kissed the top of her head.

Then he looked at me.

"Rachel," he said softly. "Can you come with me for a moment?"

My heart skipped a beat. "Of course."

I followed him down the hall into his study. The room had been completely cleaned and restored.

On the center of his desk sat a small, intricately carved wooden music box.

"I want to show you something," Luca said, picking it up.

May you like

He wound the small key on the side.

As the delicate melody began to play, the study door slowly opened, and a woman walked in.
