Chapter 12 - THE NEW BEGINNING

My hands trembled as I took the velvet box.

For a wild, crazy second, I thought it might be a ring. But when I popped the lid open, there was no diamond.

Instead, resting on the velvet cushion, was a single, shiny brass key.

"A key?" I whispered.

"It belongs to the three-bedroom brownstone on Elm Street," Dominic said quietly. "It's fully paid for. In your name. It's close to the hospital so Maya can walk to her clinicals. And it has a garden in the back."

I stared at the key, completely speechless. "Dominic... this is too much. I'm just your assistant."

He reached out and gently tilted my chin up, forcing me to look into those striking gray eyes.

"You haven't been just an assistant to me for a long time, Nora," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "You stood up to my aunt when nobody else would. You ran into a cartel clinic to save a child you didn't even know. You brought the light back into this house."

He smiled, a genuine, breathtaking smile.

"Elena and I are getting married in the spring," he continued. "Margaret is walking Rose down the aisle properly next year to renew her vows. This family is healing. And we want you to have a home of your own. You earned it."

Tears spilled over my lashes.

I threw my arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.

Dominic wrapped his massive arms around my waist, lifting me slightly off the floor, holding me with a fierce, protective warmth.

"Thank you," I sobbed into his shoulder.

"You're welcome, Nora."

Two days later, the Moretti estate hosted a Sunday dinner.

The dining room was filled with the smell of roasted garlic and fresh bread.

Margaret sat at the head of the table, wearing her faded blue dress by choice this time, laughing loudly at a joke Daniel had just told.

Rose was showing Maya a catalog of nursing scrubs, offering to buy her a new wardrobe for her graduation.

Elena was feeding Sofia mashed potatoes, smiling radiantly at the chaotic joy surrounding them.

I sat at the opposite end of the table from Margaret.

Dominic sat beside me, pouring me a glass of expensive red wine.

He raised his glass, tapping it against mine.

"To the seamstress," Dominic said quietly, looking down the table at Margaret.

"And to the maid," Margaret called back, raising her glass toward me with a wink.

I smiled, taking a sip of the wine.

I looked at the silver key resting on the table next to my plate.

Lydia had tried to destroy them all. She had used money, fear, and lies to build an empire of ice.

But looking around this table, at the laughter, the love, and the handmade veil now framed on the dining room wall, I knew the truth.

Love always wins.

And sometimes, it takes a seamstress and a maid to stitch a broken family back together.
