Chapter 2 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE WOODEN BOX

The crystal chandeliers above the dining table suddenly felt blinding.
Twenty-four guests sat in absolute, breathless silence.
Luca didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to. The quiet danger radiating from him was enough to make the room drop ten degrees.
"Vanessa," Luca whispered, his dark eyes locked onto his fiancée. "Who were you?"
Vanessa backed away from Sophia. Her red silk gown rustled against the hardwood floor.
"Luca, this is absurd," she stammered, her hands trembling as she reached for her wineglass. "Sophia is an imaginative child. You know she’s still grieving."
"Do not blame my daughter," Luca said, his voice like crushed glass.
He stepped between Vanessa and Sophia, shielding the eight-year-old girl.
Eleanor clutched my coat tighter around her shivering shoulders.
"Caroline was terrified in her final weeks," the elderly woman cried, tears spilling down her weathered cheeks. "She told me a woman from the foundation kept visiting her room when the nurses were gone. A woman who asked too many questions about the family’s estate."
Luca froze. "The foundation?"
Vanessa’s wineglass slipped from her hand. It shattered against the floor, red wine pooling like blood on the white marble.
"I was a volunteer!" Vanessa shouted, her polished facade finally cracking. "I was just checking on her! I didn't meet you until a year later at the charity gala. It was a coincidence!"
Luca didn't blink. "I never mentioned the charity gala to my mother-in-law."
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Luca took a slow step toward her.
"How did you know Caroline's jewelry box had a false bottom?" Luca asked.
Vanessa’s eyes darted toward the hallway. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Sophia said you took it," Luca stated. "Where is the box, Vanessa?"
Vanessa pressed her lips together. "I threw it away. It was full of junk."
Sophia buried her face against Eleanor’s side.
"She's lying, Daddy," Sophia whimpered. "She didn't throw it away. She locked it in her safe."
Luca turned to his head of security, who was standing by the door. "Daniel. Go to the master bedroom. Open the safe."
"Luca, you can't!" Vanessa shrieked, lunging forward.
Luca caught her wrist effortlessly. His grip wasn't violent, but it was unyielding.
"What is in the box, Vanessa?"
I stood by the doorway, my heart pounding against my ribs.
My mother’s hospital bills flashed in my mind. The rent I owed. The warning Vanessa had given me that morning.
But I couldn't stay quiet anymore.
"Mr. Moretti," I whispered.
Luca turned his head. "What is it, Hannah?"
My hands shook. "This morning, when I was cleaning Miss Bellini's dressing room... I found something."
Vanessa’s head snapped toward me. "Shut up, you stupid maid!"
Luca’s eyes darkened. "Let her speak."
I reached into the pocket of my uniform apron.
"She was burning papers in the fireplace," I explained, my voice trembling. "But she dropped this on the rug."
I held out my hand.
Resting in my palm was a scorched, half-melted silver key.
But it wasn't a house key.
It had a crest engraved on the top.
Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
"That's Caroline's," Eleanor whispered. "That's the key to her private safety deposit box."
Luca took the key from my hand. The metal was black from the fire.
He looked at Vanessa.
"You burned my wife's documents," Luca said softly. "You intercepted her mother's letters. You tortured my daughter."
Vanessa burst into tears. "I did it for us, Luca! Caroline left a mess! I was trying to protect you!"
Before Luca could answer, Daniel walked into the dining room.
He was holding the wooden jewelry box.
It had been smashed open with a hammer.
"Boss," Daniel said, his voice tight. "The recording is gone. But I found this hidden beneath the velvet lining."
Daniel handed Luca a folded piece of paper.
Luca opened it.
His face drained of color.
"What is it, Daddy?" Sophia asked quietly.
Luca looked at his daughter, then at the elderly woman holding her.
Then, he looked directly at me.
"Hannah," Luca whispered. "Where did your mother work three years ago?"
My stomach dropped. "She... she was an oncology nurse at Mercy Hospital."
Luca turned the paper around.
May you like
It was a hospital visitor log from the night Caroline died.
And my mother's signature was right next to Vanessa's.
