Chapter 12 - THE HAPPY ENDING

Six months later.
The Moretti mansion was completely transformed.
The dark, imposing shadows of the mafia lifestyle had been replaced by the bright, chaotic warmth of family. The grand dining room, where Vanessa had poured wine on me, was now covered in children’s toys and schoolbooks.
Sofia had legally finalized her divorce from Daniel. She had taken full control of her life, starting a charity foundation for single mothers. She looked radiant, confident, and completely free.
And me?
I didn't wear a uniform anymore.
I stood on the back terrace, wearing a beautiful flowing summer dress, watching the sunset over Lake Michigan.
My mother was sitting in a comfortable lounge chair nearby. Her back surgery, fully paid for by Luca, had been a complete success. For the first time in years, she wasn't in pain. She was smiling, sipping tea, and watching Leo and Mia play tag on the massive lawn.
Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind.
Luca rested his chin on my shoulder, kissing the side of my neck.
“You’re quiet,” he murmured.
I leaned back against his chest, placing my hand over his. The diamond bracelet his mother once wore sparkled on my wrist.
“I was just thinking about that night,” I said softly. “When I refused to lie for Vanessa.”
Luca turned me around, his dark eyes looking down at me with absolute adoration. The hardness that used to define his face was gone, replaced by a deep, enduring peace.
“It was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Luca said.
“Losing your fiancée and getting shot at?” I teased.
He smiled, reaching up to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear. “Finding you.”
He kissed me. It wasn't a rushed, desperate kiss. It was slow, full of promise, and deeply loving.
“Uncle Luca! Emily! Look!” Leo shouted from the grass.
We pulled apart, laughing.
Leo had caught a firefly in a glass jar. He ran up the steps, holding it up like a grand prize.
“It’s beautiful, buddy,” Luca said, ruffling his nephew’s hair. “Now let it go so it can find its family.”
Leo nodded, unscrewing the lid. The glowing bug flew up into the twilight sky.
Sofia walked out onto the terrace, carrying a tray of lemonade. She smiled at us, truly happy.
My mother caught my eye from her chair. She gave me a gentle, knowing nod.
I looked at Luca. The man who had been a terrifying mob boss, who had changed everything to protect the people he loved. He wasn't a monster. He was my protector, my partner, my future.
“Are you happy, Emily?” Luca asked quietly, holding my hand.
I looked at the beautiful house, the laughing children, my healthy mother, and the incredible man standing beside me.
“I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be,” I smiled.

And for the first time in my life, I knew nobody was going to take it away.
