Chapter 3 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE RABBIT

The guests in the hallway began to whisper frantically.

Luca stared at the small, faded photograph inside the silver pocket watch.

Then he looked at me.

“Emma,” Luca said, his voice thick with confusion. “How did my wife know you?”

I couldn’t breathe.

I stared at the picture. I was sixteen years old in the photo, wearing a cheap diner uniform, smiling brightly next to a beautiful woman with dark hair.

Clara Moretti.

Answer One: My presence in this mansion wasn't an accident.

“I… I met her at the diner where I used to work,” I stammered, tears welling in my eyes. “She used to come in every Tuesday. She always ordered black coffee and sat in my section. She was kind to me. She helped me pay for my textbooks.”

“She did more than that,” Victor said, stepping fully into the foyer.

Luca’s guards raised their weapons, but Luca held up a hand, signaling them to wait.

“Explain,” Luca commanded.

“Clara knew she was running out of time,” Victor said softly. “She knew someone in this house was slowly poisoning her.”

The words hit the room like a physical blow.

Luca staggered backward, gripping the edge of the console table. “Poisoning her?”

“She went to a private doctor three weeks before she died,” Victor continued. “The toxicology report confirmed it. Heavy metals, slipped into her evening tea over a period of months. It looked like heart failure, but it was murder.”

Isabella began to cry silently, pressing her small face into my side. I wrapped my arms around her, glaring at the man in the doorway.

“Why didn’t she tell me?” Luca asked, his voice breaking. “Why didn’t she let me protect her?”

“Because she didn’t know who was doing it,” Victor said. “She couldn’t trust her guards. She couldn’t trust your captains. She needed someone on the inside. Someone completely unconnected to your world.”

Open Two: Who poisoned Clara, and what did it have to do with me?

Victor pointed at me.

“Clara arranged for Emma’s resume to be placed at the top of your hiring agency’s pile,” Victor said. “She knew Emma was desperate for money to take care of her sick mother. She knew Emma was loyal. Clara set it up so that when she was gone, Emma would be hired to watch over Isabella.”

I covered my mouth with my hand.

For eleven months, I had thought I was lucky to get this job. I thought I had earned it.

But Clara had orchestrated it from the grave. She had chosen me to protect her child.

“I didn’t know,” I whispered to Luca. “I swear to you, Mr. Moretti, I didn’t know.”

Luca looked at my tear-stained face. He looked at the way his daughter was clinging to my apron, trusting me more than anyone else in the world.

“I believe you,” Luca said softly.

He turned back to Victor.

“You said Clara hid something in this house. Something you came to collect.”

“Proof,” Victor said. “Before she died, Clara found out who was poisoning her. She hid the evidence. She told me the location was entrusted to the one person nobody in this family would ever suspect.”

Victor looked down at Isabella.

“The child.”

Reversal: The secret wasn't with me. It was with the ten-year-old girl.

Luca knelt down in front of his daughter.

“Bella,” he said gently, brushing a tear from her cheek. “Did Mommy give you something to hide before she went to heaven?”

Isabella sniffled, shaking her head. “No, Daddy. She didn’t give me any papers. She only gave me Mr. Buns.”

She held up the worn, gray stuffed rabbit.

Victor stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. “Let me see the toy.”

“No!” Isabella pulled the rabbit back, terrified.

“Don’t touch her,” Luca warned, standing up and blocking Victor’s path.

I knelt down beside Isabella.

“Bella, honey,” I whispered. “Do you remember the night Mommy gave you the rabbit?”

She nodded, wiping her nose. “She came into my room. She was coughing a lot. She hugged me really tight and said Mr. Buns would always keep her secrets safe.”

I looked at the stuffed animal.

It was old. The seams on the back were frayed.

But one seam, right along the rabbit’s spine, was stitched with a thick, heavy black thread.

A thread that didn't match the rest of the toy.

“Bella,” I said gently. “Can I check Mr. Buns’ back? Just for a second?”

She hesitated, then slowly handed the rabbit to me.

I pulled a small sewing pin from my apron pocket. I carefully slipped it under the heavy black thread and pulled.

The seam split open.

I reached my fingers inside the cotton stuffing.

My hand brushed against something hard and cold.

I pulled it out.

It wasn’t a letter. It wasn’t a toxicology report.
