Chapter 6 - THE SILVER BRACELET

The silence in the safe house was deafening.

I stared at Teresa, my mind struggling to process her words.

“You’re Julian’s mother?” I whispered, afraid to wake Mia.

Teresa nodded, tears welling in her eyes.

She gently placed the silver bracelet in my palm, closing my fingers over it.

“Vittorio and I were young,” Teresa explained, her voice trembling with the weight of the past. “Before he became the head of the family. Before the power corrupted everything.”

“Why didn't you raise him?” I asked.

“Because Vittorio’s father—the old boss—forbade it. I was a cook’s daughter. I wasn't wealthy. I wasn't connected.”

Teresa wiped a tear from her cheek.

“Vittorio was forced to marry a woman from a rival family to secure an alliance. Adrian’s mother. I was forced to give Julian up. Vittorio promised he would protect him, so he hid him in a quiet town. He bought the diner for me, so I could have a life.”

I looked at the woman who had treated me with so much kindness.

The woman who had smiled through decades of serving breakfast, while her only son was hidden away, living a fractured life.

“You’ve been watching over him all these years,” I said softly.

“Every Sunday,” Teresa smiled through her tears. “It was the only day Vittorio allowed him to visit the diner. It was the only time I got to hold my boy.”

Suddenly, the bedroom door opened.

Julian stepped out.

He looked pale, his arm heavily bandaged, but the panic from the theater was gone.

“Mama?” Julian said, his deep voice soft.

Teresa stood up, rushing across the room.

She wrapped her arms around her massive son, burying her face in his chest.

Julian hugged her back with his good arm, resting his chin on her head.

“I’m safe, Mama. Luca saved us.”

Teresa pulled back, framing his face with her hands.

“I was so scared, my beautiful boy. I was so scared.”

Before they could say another word, the front door to the penthouse burst open.

It wasn't Marco.

It wasn't Luca.

It was Adrian.

He was bleeding from a cut above his eye, his expensive suit torn and covered in dirt.

But he was holding a heavy, black handgun.

And standing behind him, pointing weapons into the room, were three heavily armed men.

“Nobody move!” Adrian screamed, his face twisted in desperate rage.

My heart stopped.

How had he found us? Luca said he was taking Adrian to the warehouse.

Adrian locked his eyes on Julian.

“You pathetic mistake,” Adrian spat, stepping into the room. “You really thought Luca could protect you?”

Teresa stepped entirely in front of her son, shielding him.

“Don't you touch him, Adrian!”

Adrian laughed, a manic, unhinged sound.

“Get out of my way, old woman.”

He pointed the gun directly at Teresa’s chest.

“No!” Julian yelled, trying to step around his mother.

I held my breath, terrified to move, keeping my arms tightly wrapped around the sleeping Mia on the sofa.

Adrian looked at me, noticing the heavy coat I was wearing.

“Luca’s coat,” Adrian sneered. “He sent his little waitress to play babysitter. Where is the medallion, Julian?”

“You can't have it,” Julian said firmly, his innocent voice surprisingly steady.

“Give it to me, or I shoot your mother right now.”

Julian hesitated.

He slowly reached into his shirt, pulling the heavy gold chain free.

He unclasped it and held the massive gold crest in his hand.

“Let them go, Adrian. Just take it.”

“Throw it to me,” Adrian commanded.

Julian tossed the heavy gold medallion across the room.

Adrian caught it with his free hand.

He looked down at the intricate family crest, a look of pure, greedy triumph crossing his face.

“Finally,” Adrian whispered. “The old man’s legacy is mine.”

He looked back up at Julian.

The triumph in his eyes turned into cold murder.

“Kill them all,” Adrian ordered his men. “Leave no witnesses.”

The three men raised their weapons.

I curled my body completely over Mia, closing my eyes, bracing for the gunfire.

But the gunfire didn't come from Adrian’s men.

It came from the hallway behind them.

Three suppressed shots rang out in rapid succession.

Pfft. Pfft. Pfft.

Adrian’s three men collapsed to the floor simultaneously, dropping their weapons.

Adrian spun around in shock.

Standing in the doorway, holding a smoking pistol, was Luca.

His eyes were completely black with fury.

Marco and five other guards filed into the room behind him, securing the perimeter instantly.

“Drop the gun, Adrian,” Luca said.

Adrian didn't drop it.

He aimed his weapon wildly between Luca and Julian.

“You set me up!” Adrian screamed. “You let me escape the warehouse!”

Luca walked slowly into the room, his gun still raised.

“I didn't let you escape, Adrian. I left the door unlocked to see where you would run.”

Luca glanced at Marco.

“And you ran straight to the man who betrayed the safe house location.”

Marco stepped forward, dragging a bleeding, terrified guard by the collar of his shirt.

Marco threw the traitor to the floor.

“He confessed, Boss. Adrian paid him off last year.”

Luca looked back at his older brother.

“It’s over, Adrian. You have no men. You have no money. And you have no claim to this family.”

Adrian backed away, holding up the gold medallion.

“I have the crest! The Commission will recognize me!”

Luca shook his head slowly.

“The Commission recognizes blood, Adrian. And we both know you don't have it.”

Adrian’s face twisted in rage.

He pointed his gun directly at Mia, who had just woken up and was clinging to me in terror.

May you like

“If I can't have it, nobody will!”

He pulled the trigger.
