Chapter 2 - THE MISSING FUNDS FROM THE OLD SCHOOL

The silence in the dining room was so absolute you could hear the ice shifting in the crystal water glasses.
Luca didn’t look at the guests. He didn’t look at the event planner.
He kept his eyes locked on Vanessa.
"I asked you a question," Luca said. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried a weight that made the nearest guests lean back in their chairs.
Vanessa’s perfect smile faltered. A flush of angry color crept up her neck.
"Luca, please," she whispered, glancing nervously at the wealthy investors seated around the table. "This is neither the time nor the place to discuss accounting."
"It wasn't an accounting error," I said softly, standing my ground behind Mr. Harlan's chair. "Mr. Harlan was told you personally requested the payments end."
Vanessa shot me a look of pure venom. "You are overstepping, Emma. You are a housekeeper. Act like it."
"She is acting like someone who tells the truth," Mr. Harlan interjected gently. He looked at Luca. "I didn't want to bring this up tonight, son. But the principal received a formal letter of withdrawal. It was stamped with your family’s seal."
Luca’s jaw clenched.
He slowly turned to his fiancé. "I never signed a withdrawal letter. I have funded that school's arts and literature program for six years. I promised them ten."
Vanessa swallowed hard. She realized she couldn't lie her way out of the direct confrontation. So she pivoted. She played the protector.
"I did it for you, Luca!" she said, her voice trembling with manufactured distress. "I was auditing your charitable trust last month. Do you know where that money was actually going?"
She looked around the table, ensuring the guests were listening.
"The school’s administration has been mismanaging funds for years. I hired a private investigator. They were funneling your donations into private accounts. I stopped the payments to protect your reputation before the federal indictments come down."
The guests murmured. It sounded plausible. It sounded like the sharp, protective business move of a devoted future wife.
Mr. Harlan looked genuinely shocked. "That... that can't be true. The principal is a good man."
"Good men get greedy, Mr. Harlan," Vanessa said smoothly, regaining her confidence. She reached out to touch Luca’s arm. "I was going to tell you, darling. I just wanted to build a solid case first so you wouldn't be hurt."
Luca stared at her hand on his sleeve.
He didn't pull away. But he didn't soften, either.
For a second, I thought I had made a terrible mistake. If Vanessa was telling the truth, I had just humiliated her for protecting Luca’s empire. I felt a cold sweat prickle my spine. Had I ruined my family's livelihood over a misunderstanding?
Luca looked at me. Then at Mr. Harlan.
"If there is an investigation," Luca said calmly, "then you have the investigator's report."
"Of course I do," Vanessa smiled, relieved. "It’s in my desk upstairs."
"Show it to me."
"Now?" she laughed nervously. "Luca, our guests—"
"Now."
Vanessa’s smile tightened into a thin line. She nodded sharply, her heels clicking against the hardwood as she marched out of the dining room and up the grand staircase.
Luca turned to the guests. "Please, enjoy your dinner. I will return shortly."
He gestured for Mr. Harlan to sit, then looked at me. "Come with me, Emma."
We followed Vanessa upstairs to the master study. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind us, muting the chatter of the party below.
Vanessa was already at her mahogany desk, unlocking the bottom drawer. She pulled out a thick, cream-colored envelope and handed it to Luca with a triumphant look.
"Read it yourself," she said. "The private investigator's name is on the header. The bank statements are attached."
Luca opened the envelope. He pulled out a stack of documents.
I held my breath.
Luca read the first page. Then the second. His expression remained entirely unreadable.
He looked up at Vanessa. "You hired Richard Vance to look into this?"
"He is the best corporate investigator in Chicago," Vanessa said proudly. "My father uses him all the time."
Luca nodded slowly. He looked down at the documents again.
"Answer One, Open Two," my grandmother used to say. When a liar gives you a perfect answer, they usually expose two new secrets in the process.
Luca didn't hand the papers back to Vanessa. He handed them to me.
"Look at the second page, Emma," Luca instructed softly. "Tell me what you see."
Vanessa scoffed. "Why are you letting the maid read confidential financial reports?"
I took the heavy parchment. I looked at the bank statements Vanessa had provided as proof of the school’s corruption.
My blood ran cold.
The offshore routing number at the top of the page wasn't a school account. It wasn't an administrator's hidden fund.
I looked up at Luca, my hands shaking.
"Mr. Moretti," I whispered. "This routing number... this is the account that pays my mother's rent."
Vanessa froze.
Luca looked at his fiancé, his eyes turning black with a sudden, terrifying realization.
May you like
"Why," Luca asked, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper, "are the funds stolen from my charity being deposited directly into the bank account of my housekeeper's dying mother?"
