Chapter 9 - THE SUNFLOWER DRESS

The gunshot echoed through the abandoned orphanage.

Dante’s father slumped forward in the wooden chair, completely motionless.

The silence that followed was absolute.

Dante stood over the man who had haunted his life, the detonator safely in his left hand, his smoking pistol in his right. He didn't look victorious. He looked exhausted.

He turned around and walked back to us.

He dropped to his knees in front of Mia, pulling her into a fierce, crushing embrace.

“You’re safe now, principessa,” Dante whispered, kissing the top of her head. “Nobody will ever take you away from me again.”

Mia wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. “I knew you would come, Daddy.”

Dante looked up at me over Mia’s shoulder. The hardness in his eyes melted away, replaced by a profound, overwhelming gratitude.

He reached out and gently pulled me down into the embrace.

For the first time, we weren't a mafia boss and a housekeeper. We were just three people who had survived the dark, holding onto each other in the light.

Two weeks later.

The Rinaldi mansion was completely transformed.

The heavy, oppressive silence that had dominated the house during Isabella’s reign was gone. The windows were open, letting the warm spring breeze fill the hallways.

I was standing in the kitchen, not in a maid’s uniform, but in a comfortable sweater and jeans.

I was officially the Estate Manager now, overseeing a newly vetted, fiercely loyal staff. My sister Chloe had been forgiven and was attending her final college classes, paid for entirely by the Rinaldi family trust.

Isabella had survived her injuries and was serving a ten-year sentence in a federal facility for her part in the conspiracy.

Dante walked into the kitchen, wearing a casual button-down shirt. He looked rested, the dark circles under his eyes finally gone.

“Good morning,” he smiled, leaning against the counter.

“Morning,” I replied, pouring him a cup of coffee.

Footsteps echoed down the hall, and Mia ran into the kitchen. She wasn't wearing a stiff, formal dress meant to impress strangers.

She was wearing a bright, casual sundress covered in little yellow sunflowers.

“Sarah! Daddy!” Mia beamed, holding up a piece of paper. “Look what I drew!”

Dante knelt down. “Let’s see it, sweetheart.”

It was a drawing of three stick figures standing in front of the mansion. A tall man, a little girl in a yellow dress, and a woman holding the little girl’s hand.

Written at the top, in gold crayon, were the words: My Family.

Tears pricked my eyes. I knelt down and hugged her tightly. “It’s beautiful, Mia.”

Dante stood up and looked at me, a soft, genuine smile on his face. He reached out and gently brushed a stray lock of hair behind my ear.

Everything was perfect. The past was buried, the enemies were gone, and the little girl was finally safe and loved.

It was a happy ending.

Until that evening, when I went into Dante’s private study to file some paperwork.

I opened the bottom drawer of his desk.

Sitting beneath a stack of old files was a small, black velvet box.

Curious, I opened it.

Inside was an antique brass key.

But it wasn't the key that made my blood run cold.

It was the engraved tag attached to it.

The tag read: Mitchell Family Vault - Account #4402.

Why did Dante Rinaldi have a key to a vault belonging to my family?

Before I could process it, the heavy oak door of the study clicked shut behind me.

I spun around.

Standing in the doorway, blocking my exit, was the one person who wasn't supposed to be there.

My sister, Chloe.

And she was holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at my chest.
