Chapter 7 - THE VOICE ON THE RECORDING

The four armed contractors spread out instantly. One secured the library doors, two flanked Richard, and the fourth moved toward the tall windows, pulling the heavy velvet drapes shut.

The library, previously filled with afternoon light, plunged into heavy shadows.

Dominic didn’t flinch. He slipped the wooden rosary bead into his vest pocket, concealing it perfectly.

"You have no authority here, Richard," Dominic said, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "These are my men on the perimeter."

Richard smiled, adjusting the lapels of his dark overcoat. "Your men work for the company payroll, Dominic. As of an hour ago, I control the payroll. They took their severance and went home. You are entirely alone."

He stepped further into the room, his eyes scanning the desk, lingering on the open wall safe.

"I heard the little argument with Elaine," Richard said, his tone conversational, as if he were discussing a golf handicap. "It’s a shame she broke the necklace. But I suppose the secret is out. Where is the SD card, Dominic?"

Dominic stood tall. "It's gone to the police."

Richard laughed. It wasn't a nervous laugh; it was a deeply confident, terrifying sound.

"Please. I've had eyes on this estate all morning. Nothing has left these gates. Hand it over, Dominic. Make this easy on yourself. You're a sick, confused old man who needs rest."

I moved slightly, positioning myself between Dominic and the nearest guard. "Mr. Russo's medical proxy requires an independent neurological assessment," I stated clearly. "Dr. Hayes’s preliminary report is invalid due to coercion."

Richard finally looked at me. His eyes were cold, dead things.

"Ah, the nurse," Richard sneered. "Margaret, isn't it? Such a dedicated professional. Did you know she's a widow, Dominic? Her husband died in a tragic construction accident ten years ago. A collapsed scaffold on a municipal site."

My breath hitched. My heart hammered against my ribs.

"Keep my husband out of this," I warned, my voice shaking despite my best efforts.

Richard tilted his head. "I'm just pointing out a coincidence. It was a Russo Construction site, wasn't it? The one on 4th and Elm? The site we had to shut down because of... what was it... improper safety inspections?"

Dominic looked at me, shock registering on his face. "Margaret? Is that true?"

I swallowed hard. "Yes. Tom died on your site."

Richard grinned, a shark smelling blood in the water. "She didn't tell you? My, my. A nurse who infiltrates the home of the man responsible for her husband's death. That sounds like a motive for elder abuse, doesn't it? I could easily tell the police you’ve been isolating him, manipulating his medication."

"You son of a bitch," Dominic snarled, taking a step forward.

Two contractors immediately raised their hands, resting them on the holstered weapons at their belts.

"Ah, ah," Richard clicked his tongue. "Let's remain civilized. I have a court order declaring you medically unfit, Dominic. If you become violent, these men are authorized to sedate you for your own safety."

Richard pulled a folded document from his coat pocket and tossed it onto the mahogany desk.

"Sign the final transfer of the voting shares," Richard demanded. "Tell me where Sarah hid the actual certificates. Do that, and you get to live out your days in a very nice, very quiet memory care facility in upstate New York. Refuse, and things get incredibly messy."

Dominic looked at the document. Then he looked at Dr. Hayes, still cowering on the floor near the bookshelves.

"Robert," Dominic said softly. "Did you sign this?"

Hayes couldn't meet his eyes. He just wept quietly into his hands.

The betrayal was complete.

But Dominic Russo was not a man who surrendered to bullies in his own house.

"Richard," Dominic said, walking slowly back behind his desk. "You've been my lawyer for twenty-two years. You know how I operate."

"I do," Richard agreed. "Which is why I brought armed men."

"Then you should also know," Dominic continued, resting his hand on his laptop, "that I never have a meeting in this room without my hearing aid connected to the room's Bluetooth system."

Richard frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"My hearing aid isn't just an amplifier," Dominic explained, his voice echoing slightly in the large room. "It's a receiver. It connects to the phone, the television, and the computer. When Elaine put tape over the microphone, she didn't realize it didn't block the internal Bluetooth connection."

Dominic pressed a single button on his laptop keyboard.

Instantly, the high-fidelity speakers hidden in the library's ceiling crackled to life.

A voice filled the room. It was crisp, clear, and unmistakable.

It was Sarah’s voice.

"Richard, you can't do this. The pension fund is supposed to be protected."

Richard froze. The color drained from his face.

Another voice answered on the recording. It was Richard’s voice, younger, arrogant.

"Sarah, darling, the pension fund is an abstract concept. I'm moving the liquid assets to an offshore holding to protect the company from tax liabilities. Dominic doesn't need to know."

"That's embezzlement, Richard!" Sarah's recorded voice cried out. "If Dominic finds out—"

"If Dominic finds out," Richard's voice interrupted smoothly on the tape, "I will tell him exactly how little Gabriel actually died. I will tell him about the pills you left out. I will tell him you paid Robert Hayes to forge the death certificate. I will burn your family to the ground, Sarah. Do we understand each other?"

The recording clicked off.

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone.

Dominic stared at Richard. The grief on Dominic's face had burned away, leaving nothing but absolute, terrifying fury.

"You blackmailed my wife," Dominic whispered. "You tortured the woman I loved for a decade, forcing her to watch you steal from my company, because you knew she was too terrified of losing me to tell the truth."

Richard’s confident facade shattered. He looked at the laptop, panic finally setting in.

"Where did you get that?" Richard demanded, his voice cracking.

"The SD card from the necklace," Dominic said, holding up a small black flash drive plugged into the side of the computer. "While Elaine was screaming on the floor, Margaret slipped it to me. I uploaded the files to my secure cloud server five minutes ago. Every board member, every police captain, and every major news outlet in Chicago will receive an automated email in exactly ten minutes."

Richard stared in horror. He turned to the guards.

"Smash the computer! Grab him!"

The guards hesitated. They were hired muscle, not idiots. They had just heard their employer confess to massive federal crimes on tape.

Before anyone could move, a small, distinct sound echoed from the hallway outside the library.

Click-clack. Click-clack.

It was the sound of heavy dress shoes on marble.

The door swung open.

Michael stood there. He wasn't cowering. He wasn't hiding upstairs.

He was holding a heavy, black shotgun, and it was aimed squarely at Richard Coleman’s chest.

"Get away from my father," Michael said.
