Chapter 10 - THE SISTER IN THE LOCKET

I stared at the photograph in the locket until my vision blurred.

Arthur Sterling. The man Richard had destroyed. The man whose daughter, Vanessa, had helped me take down my husband.

My mother had told me David’s father was a dangerous man tied to a syndicate. But Arthur Sterling wasn't a gangster. He was a brilliant, ethical algorithm developer.

Why would Mom lie about David’s father?

I looked closer at the photograph. The baby in my mother’s arms had a small, distinct birthmark on the back of his neck.

I dropped the locket.

It wasn't David. David didn't have a birthmark on his neck.

I did.

The baby in the photograph was me.

My mind spun violently, trying to process the impossibility of the image. If Arthur Sterling was my father... then Vanessa Cole, the woman who had slept with my husband for a year to get revenge, was my half-sister.

I grabbed the locket and ran down the attic stairs.

Mom was sitting in the kitchen, drinking tea and reading the morning paper. The headline still featured Richard’s impending federal trial.

“Mom,” I said, my voice shaking as I walked into the kitchen. I placed the open locket on the table in front of her. “You lied to me.”

Mom looked down at the photograph. The color instantly vanished from her face. She closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath.

“I didn't lie about David, Catherine,” Mom said softly, not opening her eyes. “David’s father was exactly who I said he was. A monster. I gave David up, and your father—the man who raised you—helped me find him again.”

“Then who is this?” I demanded, pointing at Arthur Sterling.

Mom opened her eyes and looked at me with profound sorrow.

“Before I met the man who raised you,” Mom whispered, “I was engaged to Arthur. We were deeply in love. We had you.”

I pulled out a chair and sat down heavily. “Arthur Sterling is my biological father?”

Mom nodded, tears spilling over her cheeks. “Arthur was brilliant, but he was naive. When Richard Bennett started his company, he brought Arthur in as a partner. Richard realized how valuable Arthur’s algorithm was. Richard didn't just frame Arthur for embezzlement, Catherine. He threatened us.”

“Threatened you how?”

“Richard told Arthur that if he didn't sign over the rights to the patent and take the fall for the missing money, Richard’s associates would ensure you and I had a fatal car accident,” Mom cried, her hands shaking. “Arthur signed the papers to save our lives. He made me take you and run. He told me to change my name, marry a good man, and never look back.”

I covered my mouth, horrified by the sheer depth of Richard’s evil. He hadn't just ruined Arthur financially. He had shattered a family.

“I married a wonderful man who raised you as his own,” Mom continued. “Your adoptive father knew everything. He took a job as Richard’s accountant years later specifically to gather the evidence to clear Arthur’s name. But he died before he could finish the job.”

“And Vanessa?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“Arthur remarried years later and had Vanessa,” Mom said. “I only found out she existed when she started appearing in the news as Richard’s new corporate director. I recognized her face immediately. She looks exactly like Arthur.”

My head was spinning. The mistress who had helped me destroy my husband was my blood sister.

“I have to call her,” I said, reaching for my phone.

“Catherine, wait,” Mom pleaded, grabbing my wrist. “Vanessa spent her entire life believing Richard ruined her father. If she finds out her father had another family—that he sacrificed his legacy to save us—she might hate us. She might think we abandoned him.”

“She deserves the truth, Mom,” I said firmly. “We all do. No more secrets. Richard stole thirty years of our lives with secrets. I’m not living in the shadows anymore.”

I dialed Vanessa’s number.

It went straight to voicemail.

I tried again. Nothing.

I called the new real estate firm she had set up. The receptionist answered on the second ring.

“Sterling Real Estate, how may I direct your call?”

“Hi, I need to speak to Vanessa Sterling. It’s an emergency. My name is Catherine Bennett.”

There was a long pause on the line.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Bennett,” the receptionist said, her voice tight with panic. “Ms. Sterling isn't here. We’ve been trying to reach her all morning. Her apartment was broken into last night.”

Panic seized my chest.

“Did you call the police?” I demanded.

“Yes, they’re at her apartment now,” the receptionist said.

I hung up the phone and looked at my mother.

“Richard is in federal custody,” I said, my heart pounding. “He can't reach her.”

“Richard is a billionaire, Catherine,” Mom said grimly. “He can reach anyone, from anywhere.”

I grabbed my coat.

“Where are you going?” Mom asked.

May you like

“I’m going to find my sister.”
