Chapter 2 - The Silver Locket in the Spotlight

The silence in the grand ballroom of the Vance estate was absolute.

Three hundred of Chicago’s most powerful elites stood completely paralyzed in their evening gowns and tailored tuxedos.

Julian Vance, the thirty-four-year-old billionaire who controlled the city's real estate empire, kept his hand extended toward me.

His dark eyes were locked onto mine, completely ignoring the shattered champagne glass at his feet.

"I am not joking, Clara," Julian said, his voice a low, steady rumble that carried across the marble floor. "Take my hand. Marry me. Take half of everything I own."

I stood perfectly still.

My white uniform apron lay in a crumpled heap on the floor between us. For two years, I had scrubbed the baseboards of this mansion. I had polished the crystal chandelier hanging above us. I had remained invisible.

Until tonight.

"Julian, this is madness!"

Eleanor Croft’s voice sliced through the silence like a jagged edge. She stepped forward, her emerald silk gown rustling angrily. She was supposed to be Julian’s fiancée by the end of the night. Her father, Marcus Croft, stood near the grand staircase, his face purple with rage.

"She is a maid, Julian," Eleanor sneered, her perfectly manicured finger pointing at my chest. "She cleans up my spilled drinks. You are having a nervous breakdown."

Julian didn't even look at her.

"I am having a moment of absolute clarity," Julian replied calmly. He took one step closer to me. "Well, Clara? Are you afraid?"

I looked at his outstretched hand.

I wasn't afraid. I was angry. And I was tired of hiding.

"I don't want half your empire, Mr. Vance," I said evenly. My voice didn't shake.

Eleanor let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "At least the help knows her place."

I finally turned my gaze to Eleanor.

"I don't want half," I corrected, looking back at Julian. "Because your empire was built on stolen ground. And I want it all."

The ballroom erupted into shocked gasps.

Julian’s eyes narrowed, a spark of genuine intrigue cutting through his stoic expression. He didn't pull his hand back.

"Bold words for a woman making minimum wage," Julian challenged softly.

"My last name isn't Hayes, Julian," I whispered, stepping close enough that only he could hear me. "It's Sterling. I am Arthur Sterling's daughter."

Julian’s chest stopped moving.

The color drained from his handsome face so fast it looked as though he had been struck. Arthur Sterling was his father’s former partner—the man who supposedly embezzled millions and vanished twenty years ago, leaving the Vance family to claim the entire company.

"That's impossible," Julian breathed. "Arthur's daughter died in a car crash in Seattle."

"No," I said, reaching up to the collar of my simple black uniform dress. "She learned how to scrub floors to survive after your father ruined hers."

I pulled a heavy silver locket from beneath my collar.

It was tarnished, shaped like a shield, bearing the intricate crest of the Sterling family.

Julian stared at it. He knew exactly what it was.

But it wasn't Julian's reaction that made my blood run cold.

It was Eleanor's.

From ten feet away, Eleanor Croft saw the silver locket resting against my chest. Her arrogant, mocking expression vanished instantly. Pure, unadulterated panic flashed in her eyes.

"Where did you get that?" Eleanor demanded, her voice cracking violently.

May you like

Julian finally turned to look at her. "Why do you care about her jewelry, Eleanor?"

Eleanor took a step back, her hands trembling. "Because... because that locket was supposed to be in my father's safe."
