Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH IN THE JOURNALS

"Your brother?" Harper asked, staring at the worn leather book. "You never told me you had a brother."
Arthur’s hands trembled slightly as he ran his fingers over the embossed name. "Elias was a brilliant pharmacologist. He was the golden child. He wanted nothing to do with the family business. He moved to Europe to research rare toxins. We were told he died in a lab fire in Geneva twenty years ago."
Harper’s mind raced, connecting the dots with frightening speed. "A pharmacologist... researching rare toxins." She looked at her mother’s grave. "Arthur, my mother was poisoned by a toxin that mimicked a heart attack. A rare, untraceable toxin."
The implication hung in the crisp autumn air.
Answer: The white rose at the shipping yard wasn't a threat. It was a signature. Elias was alive.
"Why would your brother fake his death?" Harper asked softly. "And why is he leaving his journal for us now?"
"Because he’s the one who made the poison," Arthur said, his voice turning to gravel. He flipped the journal open. The pages were filled with complex chemical structures, molecular weights, and formulas.
Harper leaned in. She recognized the terminology. It was advanced, groundbreaking work. But as she turned to the last entry, a loose piece of paper fluttered to the ground.
Harper picked it up. It was a letter, written recently.
Arthur,
If you are reading this, the girl proved as smart as her mother. I did not kill Sarah. Moretti stole my formula to do it. I have spent twenty years in hiding, trying to dismantle the poison I created. I am close to a cure for the toxin's lingering effects, but I am out of time. They found me. The girl has the mind to finish my work. Protect her.
E.
Open: Who found Elias? And why did he say 'lingering effects'?
Harper felt a sudden, sharp coldness in her chest. She looked at Arthur. He was reading the letter over her shoulder, his jaw tight.
"Arthur," Harper said slowly. "When you were shot... the bullet grazed you. Did you feel anything else? A burning? A numbness?"
Arthur hesitated. "Just the cold. My chest has felt tight since that night, but I thought it was just the wound."
Harper grabbed his wrist, pressing her fingers against his pulse. It was erratic. Faint.
"The Scarred Man didn't just shoot you," Harper realized, her voice thick with panic. "The bullets were coated. Moretti didn't just want you dead. He wanted you to suffer the same way my mother did."
Arthur looked down at his trembling hands. The invincible facade cracked, revealing the mortal man beneath.
"We have to go to my university lab," Harper said, slamming the journal shut. Her eyes blazed with a fierce, terrifying determination. She wasn't a helpless waitress anymore. She had the formula. She had the knowledge. "I am not losing my family again. Get in the car."
Arthur smiled weakly, a profound pride swelling in his chest. He looked at Leo, who was holding the car door open for them.
"Yes, ma'am," Arthur said.
Harper checked her phone as they rushed to the SUV. An email notification popped up on the screen.
It was from the University Dean.
