Chapter 7 - THE GREEN COAT

"Maya!" Clara screamed into the phone, lunging for the device in Lorenzo's hand.
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Silence descended on the ruined bakery, heavier and more suffocating than the smoke from the oven.
Answer one: Julian, the valet in the green coat, hadn't been completely broken by Lorenzo’s interrogation. Or rather, Vincent had an inside man who wasn't Julian at all.
"Marcus," Lorenzo roared, spinning toward his security chief. "You said Julian was locked in the holding cell in the basement!"
"He was, Boss!" Marcus said, his face pale with panic. "I locked the door myself."
"Then who was wearing the green coat?" Clara demanded, her chest heaving. "Maya said the man in the green coat opened the door!"
Lorenzo’s dark eyes narrowed, a terrifying realization dawning on him.
"Julian didn't give Vincent the gate codes," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet cadence. "Julian was the scapegoat. The real traitor is still inside the house."
Open two: Who is the true traitor inside Lorenzo's inner circle? And how did they bypass the biometric security to get to Maya?
"We have to go back," Clara said, her voice shaking uncontrollably. She grabbed Lorenzo's lapels, her fingers digging into his expensive suit. "He has my sister, Lorenzo! He has an eight-year-old girl!"
"I will get her back," Lorenzo promised, his hands covering hers. He didn't look at her like a business partner. He looked at her like a man whose own heart was currently being held hostage. "I swear on my life, Clara. I will get her back."
He turned to Marcus. "Call the estate. Find out who is still breathing."
Marcus raised his radio. "Base, this is Alpha. Come in."
Static hissed through the radio.
"Base, report!" Marcus yelled.
Finally, a voice crackled through. It was Julian. He sounded weak, terrified, and breathless.
"Mr. Moretti," Julian coughed. "They... they took her."
"Julian," Lorenzo grabbed the radio from Marcus. "Who took her? Who let Vincent in?"
"It was Daniel," Julian wheezed. "Your head of house security. He came into the holding cell... he forced me to take off the green coat... he put it on. He said Vincent needed a disguise to slip past the outer perimeter cameras."
Clara felt the floor tilt beneath her. Daniel. The man who had smiled at her when she arrived at the estate. The man Lorenzo trusted with his life.
"Daniel is Vincent’s inside man," Lorenzo stated, his jaw clenching so hard it looked carved from stone. "He disabled the internal alarms."
"Where did they take her?" Clara asked the radio.
"I don't know," Julian cried. "But Daniel said something about the old shipyard. The one Vincent owns in Queens."
"Marcus," Lorenzo tossed the radio back. "Leave two men to protect Mrs. Gable. The rest of us are going to Queens."
The drive from Brooklyn to Queens was a blur of flashing streetlights and silent, agonizing tension.
Clara sat in the passenger seat, clutching the small wooden pendant containing the microfilm. It felt incredibly heavy. It was the only thing keeping Maya alive. Vincent needed the film to secure his position on the syndicate council.
"If he hurts her," Clara whispered to the window, "I won't just hand over the film. I’ll burn his empire to the ground."
Lorenzo glanced at her. "You won't have to. I will do it for you."
They arrived at the abandoned shipyard just as a thick, freezing fog rolled off the East River.
Massive, rusting cargo containers formed a maze of steel in the darkness. Lorenzo’s SUVs parked silently a block away.
"Thermal imaging shows heat signatures in warehouse four," Marcus reported, looking at a military-grade tablet. "Six hostiles. One small heat signature in the center. That’s the girl."
"We breach from three sides," Lorenzo commanded, pulling a heavy tactical shotgun from the trunk. He looked at Clara. "You stay in the armored car."
"No," Clara said, opening her door and stepping into the fog.
"Clara, this isn't a negotiation," Lorenzo said sharply. "It’s a firefight."
"She’s my sister," Clara said, walking up to him. She pulled the wooden pendant from her pocket and held it up. "And I am the only one who can make the trade. Vincent wants me. If you go in there guns blazing, he’ll kill her before you cross the room."
Lorenzo stared down at her. He hated that she was right.
Reversal: The mafia boss wasn't calling the shots anymore. The waitress was orchestrating the play.
"You walk in the front door," Lorenzo said finally, his voice tight with protective anxiety. "You keep him talking. Do not hand over the film until I have a clear shot at his head."
"Understood," Clara said.
She walked away from the safety of the vehicles, her footsteps echoing on the wet asphalt as she approached the cavernous, rusting warehouse.
The heavy metal doors were slightly ajar.
Clara pushed them open and stepped into the dim light.
Vincent stood in the center of the warehouse. He was smiling.
And sitting on a wooden crate next to him, crying softly, was Maya.
But as Clara took a step forward, the shadows shifted.
Stepping out from behind a cargo container, holding a gun to Maya’s head, wasn't Vincent.
It was Mr. Henderson.
