Chapter 5 - MY MOTHER HAD BEEN WATCHING MY MARRIAGE FALL APART

I hadn't heard my mother's voice in sixteen years.

Not since the night before she supposedly died.

The sound came through Elias's office speakers as clearly as if she were standing beside me.

“Serena.”

I couldn't answer.

Damiano stepped toward the control panel.

“Isabella.”

She laughed softly.

“You sound like Vittorio.”

His face hardened.

“Don't say his name.”

“Still loyal after all these years.”

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

The building alarms stopped.

Lights returned.

The elevator remained locked.

My mother continued.

“I assume Leonard told you the family version.”

Leonard wiped blood from his mouth.

“Your version, actually.”

“Then perhaps you finally learned discretion.”

I looked at the ceiling speaker.

“Why did you try to kill me?”

Everything stopped.

Elias looked at me.

Claudia covered her mouth.

Damiano's jaw flexed.

My mother's voice didn't change.

“I didn't.”

“Leonard says you did.”

“Leonard says whatever advances Leonard.”

He smiled.

Not denying it.

I looked at him.

“You lied?”

“I simplified.”

Damiano grabbed his jacket.

“Where is she?”

Leonard laughed.

My mother's voice cut through.

“Let him go, Damiano.”

He released Leonard slowly.

“Serena, your father believed I ordered the attack. He was wrong.”

“Who did?”

“That is why I'm here.”

My heartbeat pounded.

“Who?”

She didn't answer.

Instead, the office television turned on.

Security footage appeared.

Old footage.

Seven years old.

The date was stamped at the bottom.

The night I left the Moretti estate.

I saw myself crossing the driveway with a suitcase.

Younger.

Angry.

Crying.

Then another camera angle.

A sedan waiting beyond the gates.

Two men inside.

I recognized one.

Carlo Santori.

My father's missing operations chief.

The second—

Leonard Voss.

I looked at him.

His smile disappeared.

My mother said:

“Carlo planned to intercept you before the airport.”

Leonard backed toward the window.

Damiano's men moved.

“That's altered footage.”

“No,” my mother said.

“You're simply surprised Vittorio kept copies.”

I stared at Leonard.

“You ordered it.”

He looked at me.

“Your mother was the target.”

“What?”

My mother's voice came again.

“Carlo and Leonard wanted both of us removed. Vittorio learned about the plan. He believed I was involved because the payments came through my trust.”

“Were you?”

“No.”

“Then why disappear?”

“Because your father didn't believe me.”

Pain entered her voice for the first time.

“He chose you.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Not business.

Not control.

Resentment.

“My father forced you out because he thought you tried to kill me.”

“Yes.”

“And you spent sixteen years blaming me.”

Silence.

That was answer enough.

“Mom.”

“You had everything after I disappeared.”

“What?”

“His trust. His loyalty. Damiano.”

Damiano looked toward the speaker.

My mother continued.

“The family closed around you.”

“No. I left.”

“Because he wanted you to.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You think I had a family? I spent seven years believing both my parents were dead.”

She said nothing.

“I married a man who had no idea who I was because I was terrified that if anyone knew me, I'd become valuable before I became loved.”

Elias flinched.

Good.

I wasn't trying to hurt him.

But he needed to hear it.

My mother spoke quietly.

“And how did that work out?”

The cruelty was subtle.

Familiar.

I remembered it suddenly.

The childhood criticism.

The expectation.

The way affection always felt conditional.

“You watched.”

It wasn't a question.

“You watched my marriage.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To see whether Elias could be useful.”

Elias swore.

I closed my eyes.

“How long?”

“Two years.”

Two years.

She had watched Elias change.

Watched Claudia approach him.

Watched Leonard manipulate him.

Watched me shrink inside a marriage that was becoming lonelier.

And did nothing.

No.

Worse.

She helped.

“Did you authorize Claudia?”

Silence.

Claudia started crying.

Elias looked at her.

I knew.

“Mom.”

“Yes.”

My breath left me.

Leonard turned toward the speaker.

“That was supposed to remain between us.”

My mother laughed.

“So was your attempt to murder me.”

Leonard's face went pale.

There it was.

The alliance had broken.

Damiano looked at me.

“We need to move.”

“Where?”

“Safe location.”

“No.”

“Serena.”

“I am done being moved around by people claiming it's for my safety.”

His face softened.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.”

That was why I trusted him.

Elias watched the exchange.

Something in his face hurt.

He understood the comparison.

My mother said:

“You always were stubborn.”

“I learned from you.”

“I'll give you one chance.”

“For what?”

“Sign your Moretti shares to me.”

The room went still.

There it was.

The real reason.

“Why?”

“They were mine before Vittorio stole them.”

“Then challenge the estate.”

“I have.”

“Did you win?”

Silence.

“No.”

“Then why would I hand them over?”

“Because if you don't, Mercer Group collapses.”

Elias stiffened.

I looked at him.

My mother continued.

“Leonard's port agreements will trigger default clauses within forty-eight hours. Mercer Group pledged assets against the Savannah project.”

Elias went pale.

I remembered the fifty-million-dollar loan.

“How bad?”

He looked at me.

“Bad.”

My mother laughed softly.

“You see? You can save him.”

I stared at the speaker.

“You destroyed my marriage so you could blackmail me with my ex-husband's company?”

“I created pressure.”

“No.”

My voice hardened.

“You created pain because you wanted leverage.”

Silence.

I continued.

“You could have called.”

“You would have hung up.”

“Probably.”

That seemed to surprise her.

“But at least that would have been honest.”

My mother's voice went cold.

“Honesty is a luxury.”

“No.”

I looked at Leonard.

Then Claudia.

Then Elias.

“Honesty is expensive. That's different.”

Damiano almost smiled.

I turned toward Elias.

“Can Mercer survive without the Savannah deal?”

He hesitated.

“With restructuring.”

“How long?”

“Maybe.”

“Elias.”

“Six months.”

“Without financing?”

“Less.”

I nodded.

My mother said:

“You see?”

“Yes.”

I understood perfectly.

She expected me to choose.

My inheritance or Elias.

Moretti power or the man who discarded me.

She thought love would make me weak.

Leonard thought greed would make me predictable.

They both misunderstood.

I looked at Damiano.

“Can Moretti Maritime refinance Mercer Group?”

Elias stared.

Damiano didn't blink.

“Yes.”

“How fast?”

“Today.”

Elias stepped forward.

“Serena, no.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I won't let you save me because you feel sorry for me.”

For the first time in days, he said something I respected.

“I don't.”

He winced.

I continued.

“I'll make it a commercial loan.”

Damiano's eyes sharpened.

“Interest?”

“Market plus two.”

Elias stared.

“That'll hurt.”

“I know.”

“Collateral?”

“Your logistics division.”

He almost laughed.

“You sound like your father.”

“I'll take that as a compliment.”

My mother's voice became cold.

“Don't do this.”

I looked at the speaker.

“Why?”

“You'll strengthen him.”

“No.”

“I'll make him accountable.”

Elias stared at me.

That mattered too.

I wasn't rescuing my ex-husband.

I was creating a door.

Whether he walked through it was his choice.

Damiano pulled out his phone.

“I can have documents drafted in twenty minutes.”

“Do it.”

My mother snapped:

“Serena.”

“No.”

It was the first time in my life I had said the word to her without fear.

“No deals.”

“No threats.”

“No disappearing.”

I looked around Elias's office.

“And no more deciding my life for me.”

The speakers went silent.

Then the elevator display came back online.

My mother had ended the call.

Leonard moved toward the door.

Damiano blocked him.

“You aren't leaving.”

Leonard smiled.

“You can't hold me.”

Damiano looked almost bored.

“I can until federal agents arrive.”

Leonard's face changed.

“What federal agents?”

I looked at Damiano.

He shrugged.

“I made calls.”

“You weren't supposed to start anything.”

“I didn't.”

He nodded toward Leonard.

“He did.”

Twenty minutes later, FBI agents entered Mercer Group headquarters.

Leonard Voss was arrested for conspiracy, fraud, racketeering, and attempted murder connected to a reopened investigation into Carlo Santori.

Claudia was not arrested.

Not yet.

She agreed to cooperate.

And my mother?

She vanished again.

But not before sending one final message directly to my phone.

You chose him again.

I stared at it.

Then typed:

May you like

No.

For the first time, I chose myself.
