Chapter 12 - THE MATRIARCH'S LEGACY

We drove toward the DeLuca estate, the night sky heavy with impending snow.

My father was safe in the Brooklyn vault with Maria and the rest of the family. Marco and I were alone.

As we approached the massive wrought-iron gates of the estate, I saw them. Six black SUVs idled on the road. A dozen men in heavy coats stood around, smoking cigarettes in the cold.

Standing at the front of the gates was an elderly man leaning on a silver cane. Vincent Russo.

Marco parked the car aggressively, the tires screeching on the asphalt.

We stepped out into the freezing wind.

Russo smiled, a chilling, hollow expression. "Marco DeLuca. You've grown into a handsome man. But you are hiding something that belongs to me."

"William Carter owes you nothing," Marco said, his voice echoing like thunder in the quiet street. "He is under my protection."

Russo laughed dryly. "You run restaurants, Marco. I run cities. Carter stole millions from me thirty-five years ago. Bring him out, or I take everything you own."

I stepped out from behind Marco.

Russo's eyes locked onto me. His smile vanished.

He stared at my face, a look of genuine shock crossing his weathered features.

"Clara," Russo whispered, stepping back.

"My name is Lily," I said clearly, my voice steady despite the terror inside me. "Clara was my mother."

I reached into my coat and pulled the jade pendant out, letting it rest visibly over my blouse.

The security lights from the gate caught the gold backing.

Russo’s men shifted uncomfortably. They knew what the crest meant.

"My mother bought my father's life," I said, stepping closer to the gates. "She secured absolute immunity for our family. And that protection extends to me."

Russo stared at the necklace. His knuckles turned white as he gripped his cane.

"The Commission gave her that," Russo growled. "Because she threatened to release Antonio's ledger to the FBI."

"And now I own the ledger," Marco lied smoothly, stepping up beside me and taking my hand. "Touch her, touch her father, or touch my family, and I will burn your entire empire to the ground before breakfast."

Russo looked at Marco, then at me. He saw the absolute resolve in our eyes. He knew we weren't bluffing.

Slowly, painfully, Russo turned away.

"Get in the cars," he ordered his men.

We stood in the freezing cold, Marco's hand holding mine tight, as the black SUVs drove away into the night, disappearing for good.

The threat was over.

A year later.

The Brooklyn restaurant was bustling, completely renovated but retaining all its historic charm.

I stood in the kitchen, wearing a pristine white chef's coat.

I wasn't a kitchen assistant anymore. I was the co-owner.

My father sat in his favorite back booth, happily eating a plate of lasagna, watching the snow fall outside the window.

Marco walked through the swinging kitchen doors, looking devastatingly handsome in his dark suit.

He walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.

"It smells perfect," Marco whispered, kissing my neck.

"It's Maria's recipe," I smiled, turning in his arms.

"And now it's yours," Marco said, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket.

He opened it. Inside sat a stunning diamond ring, simple and elegant.

"Lily Carter," Marco said, his dark eyes filled with endless love. "Will you make me the happiest man in Brooklyn?"

I threw my arms around his neck, tears of joy stinging my eyes.

"Yes," I whispered. "Yes."

Through the kitchen window, I saw Maria sitting with my father in the dining room. She raised her glass of wine to us, a proud, beautiful smile on her face.

The old red recipe book sat on the counter beside me. It was full of Antonio's history, Maria's love, and now, my future.

The DeLuca family was whole again. And this time, it was built to last forever.
