Chapter 5 - THE MUSIC BOX

The ballroom was trapped in a suffocating silence.

The remaining guests had fled through the side terrace doors, leaving only me, Noah, Adrian, Sabrina, Miller, and Vance’s men.

Miller kept his gun pressed against my spine.

“Noah,” Miller said, his voice flat. “Come here.”

Noah clung to my leg, burying his face in my apron, crying silently. I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him as close as I could.

“You’re not taking him,” I said, my voice shaking but defiant.

“Evelyn, let him go,” Adrian ordered, his voice cracking. He took a slow step toward us. “Miller, you want money? I’ll double whatever she’s paying you. I’ll triple it. Just put the gun down and let my son go.”

Sabrina let out a sharp, mocking laugh.

“It’s not about the money, Adrian,” she said, walking slowly across the ruined cake and broken glass. “It’s about the land.”

Adrian stared at her. “What land?”

“The land your flagship hotel sits on,” Sabrina spat, her eyes flashing with venom. “My father owned that property twenty years ago. Your father stole it through a corrupt zoning loophole and drove my family into bankruptcy. My father died with nothing.”

“I didn’t know about that,” Adrian said. “I was a teenager.”

“Clara knew,” Sabrina said softly.

The name hit the room like a physical blow.

“Clara found out,” Sabrina continued, pacing. “She found my father’s original deeds in your family’s archives. She felt guilty. She contacted my family. She promised to make it right.”

I remembered Clara’s final weeks. She had been nervous, jumping at every shadow, constantly writing in a small leather notebook.

“But then she changed her mind,” Vance interrupted, dusting off his tactical vest. “She realized returning the land would bankrupt the Cole empire. She chose her husband’s money over doing what was right.”

“So you killed her,” I whispered, the realization horrifying me.

“She had a weak heart,” Sabrina smiled coldly. “A few drops of untraceable digitalis in her tea merely hurried the process along.”

Adrian let out an agonizing cry and lunged toward Sabrina, but Vance’s men intercepted him, driving a heavy baton into his ribs. Adrian collapsed to his knees, gasping for air.

“Dad!” Noah screamed.

“Shut the kid up,” Miller snapped, pressing the gun harder into my back.

I knelt down, pulling Noah tightly against my chest. “Shh, baby. Don't look at them. Look at me. Just look at me.”

As I held him, Noah squirmed. He was clutching something tightly against his chest, hidden beneath his jacket.

The wooden music box.

He had grabbed it from his packed suitcase upstairs before coming down to the dinner.

“Mrs. Parker,” Noah whispered, his breath warm against my ear. “Mommy’s box is broken.”

I looked down. In the struggle, the bottom panel of the antique wooden box had cracked open. But it wasn’t broken. It was a false bottom.

And tucked inside the hidden compartment was a silver pocket watch.

Clara’s watch.

I slipped my hand under Noah’s jacket and closed my fingers around the cold silver. The moment I touched it, I felt a tiny, raised slot on the side.

It wasn't just a watch. It was a disguised USB drive.

Clara hadn’t chosen the money. She had hidden the evidence to protect her son, waiting for the right moment.

Sabrina noticed my sudden movement. Her eyes narrowed.

“What is he holding?” she demanded.

Before I could hide it, Miller grabbed my shoulder and yanked me backward. The music box tumbled onto the floor, shattering into pieces.

The silver watch slid across the polished wood, stopping right at Sabrina’s red heels.

Sabrina looked down at it. Then she looked at me. Pure panic flooded her face.

“She has it,” Sabrina shrieked, pointing at me. “She has Clara’s drive! Shoot her! SHOOT THE NANNY!”

Miller raised his gun, pointing it directly at my head.

But Adrian Cole, bleeding and bruised on the floor, grabbed the leg of the heavy engagement table and heaved it upward with all his remaining strength.

The heavy mahogany table flipped entirely, crashing directly into Miller just as the gun went off.
