Chapter 5 - THE LIES WE MARRIED

The silence in the car was deafening.
Mia slept quietly against my chest, her soft breaths the only sound in the freezing vehicle.
I stared at the man I had loved for seven years, the man who had slept beside me, held our daughter when she was born, and built a life with me.
“What do you mean, our marriage wasn't a coincidence?” My voice didn't sound like my own. It sounded hollow and completely broken.
Luca looked away, staring out the cracked windshield into the dark warehouse.
“Your father worked for my family,” Luca said softly. “He was the chief financial officer for our legitimate construction fronts. But ten years ago, he made a mistake. He discovered the Bellini family was laundering cartel money through our accounts.”
My hands began to shake. “My dad?”
“He came to my father with the proof,” Luca continued. “He thought he was doing the right thing. But the Bellinis found out. They threatened to kill him. And to ensure his silence, they began tracking you.”
I looked down at the photograph in my trembling hands. The Bellinis had watched me buy flowers. They had watched me walk to class. I had been a target before I even knew what a target was.
“When my father died and I took over,” Luca said, turning back to me, “your father came to me terrified. The Bellinis were closing in. He begged me to protect you.”
“So you put security on me,” I guessed, tears blurring my vision.
“No,” Luca said gently. “Security wasn't enough. The Bellinis wouldn't hesitate to kill a civilian. The only way to make you completely untouchable… was to make you a Moretti.”
The air rushed out of my lungs.
“You married me… as a favor to my father?”
The humiliation hit me harder than Vanessa’s insults ever could.
Every kiss. Every anniversary. Every “I love you” whispered in the dark.
“At first,” Luca confessed, his voice breaking. “Yes. I arranged to bump into you at that coffee shop. I pursued you because it was the only way to shield you under mafia law. But Emma, I swear to God, by the time we got married, it wasn't a job anymore. I fell in love with you.”
“Don't!” I snapped, pulling Mia closer. “Do not lie to me right now!”
“It’s not a lie!” Luca pleaded, reaching his hand over the console. I flinched away. He dropped his hand. “I kept the truth from you because I wanted you to have a normal life. I wanted you to believe our family was real.”
“And Vanessa?” I demanded, the tears spilling over. “If you loved me, why did you let her humiliate me tonight? Why didn't you just tell the Bellinis to go to hell?”
“Because your father didn't just find proof of their laundering,” Luca said, his eyes darkening. “He stole something from them. A digital ledger containing every politician and judge the Bellinis ever bribed. If they get it, they control the city. If I expose it, they are destroyed.”
I frowned. “Where is the ledger?”
“I don't know,” Luca admitted. “Your father hid it before he died. He never told me where. The Bellinis thought I had it. They offered the marriage to Vanessa in exchange for the ledger. When I stalled, they realized I didn't have it. That’s why they used Paulie to come after you tonight. They think you know where it is.”
I shook my head frantically. “I don't know anything about a ledger! He left me nothing but his old watch and some books!”
Luca froze.
“What watch?”
“His silver pocket watch,” I said, wiping my eyes. “The one he carried every day. He gave it to me in the hospital before he died. I keep it in my jewelry box.”
Luca’s expression completely changed.
“Emma,” he said urgently. “Did you ever open the back casing of that watch?”
“No,” I said. “It’s broken.”
“It’s not broken,” Luca realized, slapping the steering wheel. “It’s a false compartment. The ledger is in the watch.”
A sudden, sharp ringing pierced the silence of the car.
It was Luca’s cell phone.
He pulled it from his pocket. The caller ID was Marco.
Luca put it on speaker. “Marco, is the house secure?”
“Boss,” Marco’s voice sounded ragged, out of breath. “The Bellinis breached the gates right after you left. We held them off, but… they got inside.”
Luca’s face went pale. “My grandmother?”
“She’s safe. We locked the family in the panic room,” Marco coughed. “But Vanessa didn't go for them.”
“What did she go for?” Luca demanded.

“She went straight to your master bedroom, Boss. She took a silver pocket watch from Emma’s jewelry box.”
