Chapter 12 - THE FINAL TRUTH

The grand ballroom of the Moretti mansion was a sea of glittering chandeliers, flowing champagne, and the elite society of Chicago.
But as Luca and I walked down the grand staircase, hand in hand, the music slowly faded. The dull roar of conversation died down to a hushed, awe-struck silence.
Everyone was staring at us.
They weren't staring because Luca Moretti looked devastatingly handsome in his tuxedo. They weren't staring because I was wearing a million-dollar gown.
They were staring because around my neck, resting heavily against my collarbone, was the legendary sapphire Moretti Matriarch Necklace.
The necklace that was only worn by the lady of the house.
I squeezed Luca’s hand nervously.
He squeezed back, a proud, defiant smile on his face.
At the bottom of the stairs, Isabella was waiting for us. She looked radiant in a deep burgundy dress, the heavy weight of her past trauma finally lifted from her shoulders. Standing right beside her, wearing a small tuxedo that matched Luca’s, was Leo.
He was holding Isabella’s hand tightly, looking up at her with pure adoration.
“You look beautiful, Natalie,” Isabella said warmly, pulling me into a tight embrace.
“Thank you, Bella,” I whispered, hugging her back.
My mother walked over, dabbing her eyes with a tissue. She looked healthy and vibrant, the fear that had haunted her for fifteen years completely erased from her face.
“Your Babcia is smiling down on you tonight, Nattie,” my mother said in Polish, kissing my cheeks.
Luca let go of my hand and walked over to the microphone set up on the small stage at the front of the room.
The crowd held its breath.
“Welcome, everyone,” Luca’s deep voice echoed through the speakers, commanding the absolute attention of every person in the room. “Tonight, we are here to celebrate the future of Moretti Manufacturing.”
He looked at Isabella.
“For the past fifteen years, my sister Isabella has been the silent backbone of this company,” Luca said proudly. “Starting tomorrow, she will no longer be silent. She is officially stepping in as Co-CEO.”
The crowd erupted into massive applause. Isabella beamed, tears of joy shining in her eyes as Leo clapped loudly beside her.
Luca raised his hand, signaling for quiet.
“But tonight is also about family,” Luca continued, his voice softening. “A family that was broken by lies, by greed, and by a man who tried to destroy everything my father built.”
A murmur rippled through the crowd. Everyone knew about Marcus Bellini’s very public arrest.
“My father died protecting a secret,” Luca said, looking directly at me. “He died protecting the truth. And for a long time, I was blind to that truth. I let the wrong people into my life. I let the wrong people into my home.”
He stepped down from the stage and walked slowly toward me, the crowd parting like the Red Sea to let him through.
“But then, a woman walked into this house,” Luca said, his eyes never leaving mine. “A woman who was supposed to be invisible. A woman who was supposed to just clean the floors and serve the wine.”
He stopped right in front of me.
“She didn't stay invisible,” Luca smiled. “She stood up to monsters. She exposed lies. She saved my sister’s life, she saved my nephew’s life, and she saved my soul.”
The entire ballroom was dead silent. I could hear my own heart pounding in my ears.
Luca reached into his tuxedo pocket.
He didn't pull out the gaudy, three-carat diamond ring he had taken back from Vanessa.
Instead, he pulled out a simple, elegant vintage gold band. It was understated, classic, and absolutely perfect.
He dropped to one knee.
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
“Natalie Brooks,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “You own half the shipping ports in Chicago. You wear the necklace of my ancestors. But all I want... is for you to wear my name.”
Tears spilled freely down my cheeks.
“Will you marry me?” Luca asked, looking up at me with absolute vulnerability.
I didn't hesitate. I didn't think about the crowd, or the money, or the past.
I just looked at the man who had protected my mother, defended my honor, and loved me when I was nothing but a maid.
“Yes,” I sobbed, laughing through my tears. “Yes, Luca. I will.”
He slid the ring onto my finger, stood up, and pulled me into a kiss that made the entire room erupt into cheers and applause.
I wrapped my arms around his neck, feeling the solid, heavy warmth of the sapphire necklace pressing against my skin.
It wasn't a burden anymore. It was a promise.
As we pulled apart, I looked over his shoulder. Isabella was hugging Leo, laughing. My mother was clapping, her face glowing with pride.
The storm was finally over.
The secrets were buried.

The ignorant little maid who didn't speak Polish had finally found her voice.
And she had found her home.
