Chapter 10 - THE DEED TO A NEW BEGINNING

I kept one arm securely wrapped around Charlotte's trembling shoulders as I knelt to unlatch the heavy leather briefcase Dominic had left behind.
The brass locks popped open with a sharp click.
I expected to see the finalized trust fund documents Vanessa had demanded—the paperwork legally handing over forty percent of the waterfront properties to her fake unborn child.
Instead, sitting on top of the neat stacks of paper was a single, hand-written letter, addressed to me.
My hands shook as I broke the seal and unfolded the thick stationary. The handwriting was unmistakably Dominic’s—sharp, aggressive, but rushed.
Maggie,
If you are reading this, it means I am either dead or in federal custody. I knew Vanessa was lying. I knew from the moment she claimed to be pregnant. She is a Bellini, and Bellinis only know how to take.
I played along because I needed her close. I needed to find out where she had hidden her father's offshore accounts, the ones he used to pay off the hospital staff twenty-three years ago. I thought finding the money would finally lead me to the truth about who actually killed our daughter.
I never stopped looking, Maggie. I never gave up on Charlotte. I let you hate me because it was safer for you to be angry than to be caught in the crossfire of my revenge. The documents in this briefcase aren't trust funds for her fake baby. They are the full legal transfers of my entire empire, scrubbed completely clean, into an irrevocable trust in your name. You are protected.
I failed you as a husband. I failed Charlotte as a father. I hope this gives you the peace I never could.
Forever yours,
Dominic.
I stared at the letter, the words blurring through my tears.
He had known. He had been playing a long, dangerous game of chess against Vanessa, sacrificing his own marriage and reputation to secure my future. He hadn't betrayed me; he had thrown himself onto the sword to protect me from the Bellini family’s final strike.
But it didn't erase the twenty-three years of silence. It didn't erase the fact that he chose the mafia over trusting his own wife.
"Mom?" Charlotte asked softly, her voice still raspy. She looked at the letter in my hands. "Is he a bad man?"
I looked at my daughter. The daughter who had inherited Dominic’s dark hair but my green eyes. The daughter who had been a pawn in a war she never asked for.
"He is a complicated man," I said gently, folding the letter and placing it back into the briefcase. "He did terrible things. But he did them because he thought he was protecting us. We don't have to forgive him right now. We just have to focus on us."
Silas walked back into the foyer, holstering his weapon. "Police are on their way, Maggie. I gave them the FBI contact. They’ll process Paulie’s body, but with the federal raid happening across the city, you’re in the clear. Dominic took the fall for everything."
"Where did Dominic go?" I asked.
"He turned himself in," Silas said heavily. "He walked straight up to the federal agents raiding the docks. He confessed to the racketeering. He's going away for a long time, Maggie."
I closed my eyes, a complicated wave of grief and immense relief washing over me. The violent chapter of my life was officially closed.
"Arty," I said, turning to the pawnbroker. "Thank you. You saved our lives today. You’ll never have to worry about money or protection again."
Arty nodded, his face pale but proud. "Just glad to pay off the debt to your old man, Mrs. Moretti. I'll go back to my shop now."
Once the police arrived and the chaos of the crime scene was contained to the kitchen, I led Charlotte upstairs.
We walked past the grand master bedroom. We walked past the empty, stripped-down nursery that had caused so much pain.
I took her to the guest suite at the end of the hall. It was a beautiful, bright room with large bay windows overlooking the gardens.
I ran a warm bath for her. I found the softest silk pajamas in my closet. I brushed the ten years of dirt and matting from her blonde hair, taking my time, crying silently with every stroke of the brush.
When she was finally clean, she climbed into the massive, soft bed. She looked so small, yet so incredibly resilient.
I pulled the heavy down comforter over her shoulders.
"You're safe now," I whispered, sitting on the edge of the bed. "I'm never letting you out of my sight again."
Charlotte reached out from under the covers and grabbed my hand. Her grip was surprisingly strong.
"Mom," she said, her green eyes finding mine in the dim light of the bedside lamp. "There's something I need to tell you. About the cellar."
I froze. "What is it, sweetheart? Did Vanessa hurt you?"
"No," Charlotte said, shaking her head slowly. "Vanessa didn't keep me in the cellar just to hurt Dominic. She kept me there because I wasn't alone when her men caught me ten years ago."
My heart stopped.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Charlotte swallowed hard, tears welling in her eyes.

"When I ran away from the hospital nurse ten years ago," Charlotte whispered, "I had a baby. Vanessa took him. She told me if I ever screamed for help, she would kill my son."
