Chapter 5 - THE COAT AND THE CEO

The blood on the black wool coat was impossible to ignore. It was dark, heavy, and terrifyingly real.
James’s knees buckled. He hit the polished linoleum floor, his hands gripping his hair. All the money, the corporate espionage, the betrayal—it all evaporated into pure, primal terror.
“Lucy,” he choked out, staring at the doctor. “Please. Tell me she’s alive. Tell me my baby is alive.”
The doctor looked down at James with professional detachment. Then he looked at Catherine.
“Mrs. Thorne,” the doctor said softly. “The placental abruption was severe, likely triggered by the blunt force trauma to the mother’s face and the subsequent stress spike. But we stopped the bleeding.”
Catherine closed her eyes, clutching the silver-framed photograph of her late husband to her chest. “And my daughter?”
“Resting. She’s stable,” the doctor confirmed. “The fetal heart rate is strong again. We will need to keep her in the VIP maternity suite for the next six weeks until delivery. No stress. No visitors unless explicitly approved by her.”
James let out a ragged sob of relief. He tried to stand up, his legs shaking. “I need to see her. I need to hold her hand.”
The doctor stepped back, holding up Lucy’s ruined coat. “My patient explicitly stated that if you enter her room, her heart rate will spike. If that happens, she loses the baby. Are you prepared to kill your child today, Mr. Vance?”
James froze, the words hitting him harder than Delilah’s slap had hit Lucy.
“I’m her husband,” James whispered, the fight completely draining out of him. “I have to fix this.”
“You have nothing to fix, James,” a deep, resonant voice echoed through the lobby.
James turned around.
Walking through the sliding glass doors of the hospital entrance was Marcus Thorne.
The CEO of Thorne Holdings. A man who graced the cover of Forbes twice a year. A billionaire who rarely spoke in public and moved with the silent, heavy gravity of a true kingmaker. He was flanked by three security details, but he waved them off as he approached the front desk.
James had worked for Marcus Thorne’s company for eight years. He had met the man exactly once, at a corporate retreat, where he had shaken Marcus’s hand and boasted about his quarterly projections.
Now, James instinctively stood up straight, wiping the tears from his face, trying to assemble the shattered pieces of his professional dignity.
“Mr. Thorne,” James said, his voice trembling. “I am so sorry you had to come down here. The Apex leak—I had no idea she was a spy. I will hand over all my hard drives. I can save the division.”
Marcus Thorne didn’t even look at James.
He walked directly to Catherine. The towering billionaire bowed his head slightly, kissing her cheek.
“Mother,” Marcus said gently. “Is she alright?”
James stopped breathing. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to hum loudly.
Mother?
Catherine nodded, tears finally pooling in her eyes. “She’s safe, Marcus. The baby is safe.”
Marcus let out a long, heavy sigh of relief. Then he turned slowly to face James.
The look in the CEO’s eyes was not anger. It was an executioner’s absolute calm.
“Do you know why I hired you eight years ago, James?” Marcus asked.
James shook his head, unable to speak.
“I didn't hire you for your quarterly projections,” Marcus said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the lobby. “I hired you because my little sister fell in love with a middle-class accounting major. She wanted to build a normal life. She wanted a husband who earned his own way, free from the shadow of the Thorne empire.”
Marcus took a step closer. James stepped back until his shoulders hit the wall.
“I gave you a job. I gave you promotions. I gave you the illusion that you were a self-made man,” Marcus continued. “All you had to do was love her.”
Marcus reached into his tailored suit pocket and pulled out a heavy, gold-embossed envelope.
“You failed the only metric that mattered.”
He tossed the envelope at James’s feet.

“You’re fired, James. And if you ever come within a mile of my sister again, I won't just freeze your bank accounts. I’ll erase you.”
