Chapter 2 - THE RED LIGHT ON THE PHONE

The silence in the dining room was so absolute that I could hear the rain tapping against the long crystal windows.

Thirty guests sat frozen, their expensive wine glasses suspended halfway to their mouths.

Luca didn't yell. He didn't overturn the table. He didn't even raise his voice. For a man who ran the most dangerous organization in the city, his stillness was far more terrifying than any shout.

“Answer her, Vanessa,” Luca said.

Vanessa’s manicured hands tightened around the stem of her champagne glass. Her perfect, confident smile had shattered, leaving behind a brittle, defensive mask.

“Luca, please,” she said, forcing a light, breathy tone. “Daniel was frantic. He called me in tears. He loves her. I thought if they just sat down together without any outside interference—”

“Without outside interference,” Luca repeated, cutting her off. His voice dropped an octave. “So you sent a man my sister was running from directly to her motel door.”

“I was trying to save their marriage!” Vanessa snapped, her composure cracking. “You don't just throw away vows because things get difficult! I was looking out for the family’s image!”

“You were looking out for yourself,” Isabella whispered.

Every eye turned back to the trembling woman in the gray cardigan.

Isabella wasn't looking at the floor anymore. She was looking directly at Vanessa, her brown eyes bright with a sudden, devastating clarity.

“You didn't send Daniel to my room to save my marriage, Vanessa,” Isabella said, her voice shaking but resolute. “You sent him there because he promised you something.”

Vanessa’s face went entirely pale.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Vanessa stammered.

“Yes, you do,” Isabella insisted, gripping the handle of her brown suitcase so tightly her knuckles turned white. “Daniel told me. When he was standing outside my motel door, trying to get me to let him in, he was yelling. He told me if I didn't come home, the deal was off.”

Luca went rigid.

“What deal?” Luca demanded.

Isabella looked at her brother, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes.

“Daniel’s real estate company has been struggling for months, Luca. He’s millions in debt. He told me he secured a massive loan to keep it afloat, but he needed a guarantor. A guarantor from the Moretti family.”

My heart stopped. I was just a maid, but I knew enough about Luca’s business to know he never guaranteed loans for outsiders, not even brothers-in-law.

“I never signed a guarantee for Daniel,” Luca stated flatly.

“No, you didn't,” Isabella agreed. “But Vanessa did.”

The room erupted in shocked whispers.

Vanessa stood up so abruptly her chair scraped loudly against the marble.

“That is a lie!” Vanessa shrieked. “She is lying to turn you against me!”

Luca didn't look at Vanessa. He kept his eyes locked on his sister.

“Bella, explain.”

Isabella reached into her cardigan pocket. Her hands were shaking violently as she pulled out a crumpled piece of paper.

“Daniel slipped this under the motel door when I wouldn't open it,” Isabella wept. “He was trying to prove he had the money to fix things. To prove he could take care of me.”

She handed the paper to Luca.

Luca unfolded it carefully.

I was standing close enough to see it. It was a photocopy of a bank guarantee for three million dollars, issued to Daniel’s failing company.

And at the bottom, signed on behalf of the Moretti family trust, was Vanessa Bellini’s signature.

“You forged my authorization,” Luca said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

“I didn't forge it!” Vanessa panicked, backing away from the table. “I used the power of attorney you gave me for the wedding planning! It was an investment, Luca! Daniel promised a fifty percent return in six months! I was trying to grow our portfolio!”

“You used my money to buy my sister’s husband,” Luca snarled, finally raising his voice, the sound echoing off the high ceilings like a thunderclap. “And when she tried to leave him, you realized Daniel’s company would collapse in a divorce, and your three million dollars would vanish. So you sent him to drag her back to hell just to protect your illegal investment!”

Vanessa was shaking now, her diamond earrings trembling against her neck.

“Luca, I’m sorry,” she pleaded, tears ruining her expensive makeup. “I made a mistake. I’ll get the money back. Just please, don't do this here.”

“The money means nothing to me,” Luca said, stepping closer to her. “My sister means everything.”

He turned to the head of his security detail, a massive man named Marco, who had quietly stepped into the dining room when the yelling started.

“Marco,” Luca ordered coldly. “Pack Vanessa’s belongings. Have her escorted off the property. The engagement is over.”

Vanessa let out a horrific scream.

“You can't do this to me! I gave you three years of my life! You’ll be a laughingstock without my family’s connections!”

“Take her,” Luca commanded, not even looking at her anymore.

Marco and another guard grabbed Vanessa by the arms. She kicked and screamed, hurling insults as they dragged her out of the dining room. The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her hysterics.

The remaining guests sat in stunned, terrified silence.

Luca turned to them, his expression unreadable.

“Dinner is concluded,” he announced. “Please see yourselves out.”

Nobody argued. Within three minutes, the thirty wealthy guests had vanished, leaving only Luca, Isabella, and me in the massive room.

Isabella collapsed back into her chair, sobbing uncontrollably into her hands.

Luca knelt beside her again, wrapping his strong arms around her trembling shoulders.

“It’s over, Bella,” Luca whispered, kissing the top of her head. “You’re safe now. He can’t hurt you here.”

“I’m so sorry, Luca,” she wept. “I caused such a mess.”

“You did exactly what you were supposed to do,” he assured her. “You came to your family.”

He stood up and looked at me.

“Emily, prepare the guest suite in the east wing for my sister. Make sure the security detail knows nobody is allowed near that corridor.”

“Right away, sir,” I said, my voice shaking slightly.

I reached down to pick up Isabella’s small brown suitcase.

As I lifted it, the cheap latch on the side caught on the edge of the dining chair. The suitcase popped open, spilling its contents onto the expensive Persian rug.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” I gasped, immediately dropping to my knees to gather her things.

There wasn't much. A few sweaters, some toiletries, and a small, locked metal lockbox.

As I reached for the lockbox, Isabella suddenly lunged forward with a terrified cry.

“Don't touch that!” she screamed, snatching the metal box from the floor and clutching it to her chest as if it burned her.

I stumbled backward, shocked by her sudden aggression.

“I’m sorry, Miss Isabella,” I stammered. “I was just trying to help.”

Luca frowned, looking down at his sister.

“Bella, what’s wrong?” Luca asked gently. “What’s in the box?”

Isabella was hyperventilating, her eyes wide and wild, staring at the metal box in her arms.

“Nothing,” she gasped out. “It’s just... personal things.”

“Then why are you shaking?” Luca asked, stepping closer.

“It’s just my jewelry, Luca,” she insisted, her voice rising in panic. “Daniel tried to take it before I left. I just wanted to keep it safe.”

But I wasn't looking at the box anymore.

I was looking at the small, glowing red light blinking rapidly through a tiny hole in the side of the metal casing.

“Mr. Moretti,” I whispered, pointing a trembling finger.

Luca followed my gaze.

He saw the blinking red light.

His mafia instincts kicked in instantly. The softness vanished from his face, replaced by absolute, lethal realization.

“Give me the box, Bella,” Luca commanded, his voice hardening into steel.

“No!” she cried, backing away from him.

Luca didn't ask twice. He grabbed the box from her hands, ignoring her protests, and slammed it onto the dining table. He pulled a heavy pocket knife from his suit jacket and wedged it under the cheap lock.

With a violent twist of his wrist, the lock snapped.

He threw the lid open.

There was no jewelry inside.

Resting on a bed of foam was a high-grade, active GPS tracking device.

And wired directly into it was a sophisticated audio transmitter, the red light blinking rhythmically as it recorded every sound in the room.

Luca stared at the device, the blood draining from his face.

“Bella,” Luca whispered, the betrayal hitting him like a physical blow. “This isn't a jewelry box. This is a tracker.”

May you like

He looked up at his sister, his dark eyes burning with a terrifying mix of sorrow and fury.

“If you were running away from Daniel,” Luca asked, his voice deadly quiet, “why did you bring a device that broadcasts your exact location straight to him?”
