Chapter 5 - THE WHITE RAINCOAT

The rain hissed against the burning debris of the west wing, casting twisted, dancing shadows across the courtyard.
Daniel’s lifeless body lay in the mud. Isabella was hyperventilating beside me, clutching my arm so tightly her nails dug into my skin.
Vanessa stepped forward, stepping delicately over the mud in her pristine white raincoat, her suppressed pistol hanging casually at her side. The six tactical guards who had arrived with Daniel didn't raise their weapons at her. They immediately flanked her, their shotguns trained squarely on us.
“Vanessa,” Luca breathed, the absolute shock finally breaking through his hardened exterior. “You blew up my house.”
“Just the west wing, darling,” Vanessa smiled, a chilling, venomous expression that looked completely unnatural on her beautiful face. “It’s amazing what a few strategically placed gas leaks can do when triggered by a remote detonator.”
She looked down at Daniel’s body with utter disgust.
“He was such a pathetic, desperate man,” Vanessa sneered. “He actually believed I wanted to help his failing company. I just needed a useful idiot to distract your security forces at the front gates so I could quietly execute my own plan.”
My mind raced, frantically trying to piece the nightmare together.
“You orchestrated this entire night,” I said, stepping slightly out from behind Luca, my voice trembling but loud enough to be heard over the fire.
Vanessa’s eyes flicked to me, her smile widening into a predatory grin.
“Ah, Emily,” Vanessa purred. “Or should I say, Agent Vance?”
My blood ran cold. She knew.
“Marco told you,” Luca realized, his grip tightening on his pistol.
“Marco didn't tell me anything,” Vanessa laughed, a high, brittle sound. “Marco is just a pawn acting on orders from the Police Commissioner. But I knew who the little maid was the moment I hired her two years ago.”
She took another step closer, relishing the absolute power she held in the rain-soaked garden.
“Why do you think I treated you like garbage, Emily?” Vanessa mocked. “Why do you think I constantly threatened your job? I wanted to see how much abuse a highly trained federal prosecutor would take just to maintain her cover. And I must admit, your dedication was impressive. You really believed you were going to find the evidence to clear your name in this house.”
“The evidence is in his father’s safe,” I spat, anger overriding my fear. “I know the Commissioner’s payoff ledgers are in there. You’re working for them. You’re tying up loose ends.”
Vanessa sighed dramatically, rolling her eyes.
“You federal agents are so remarkably short-sighted,” Vanessa said, shaking her head. “I don't work for the Commissioner. And I certainly don't care about a twenty-year-old ledger proving police corruption.”
She pointed the suppressed pistol directly at Luca’s chest.
“I’m not a cleaner, Luca,” Vanessa said, her voice dropping all pretense, turning cold and absolute. “I’m a hostile takeover.”
Luca didn't flinch. “You think killing me gives you my empire, Vanessa? My captains will hunt you to the ends of the earth.”
“Your captains are currently burning to death in the west wing,” Vanessa corrected smoothly. “The few who survive will assume Daniel’s men killed you in the crossfire. By tomorrow morning, I will step in as the grieving fiancée, clutching my forged power of attorney, and transition your assets to my real partners.”
“Who are your partners, Vanessa?” Luca demanded, a dark, lethal edge creeping into his tone.
Vanessa smiled.
“The Russian Bratva,” she said simply.
The revelation hit like a physical blow. The Bellini family was a minor player in Chicago, but the Bratva was a global superpower. Vanessa hadn't just betrayed Luca; she had sold the entire Chicago syndicate to a foreign cartel.
“You sold us out,” Isabella whispered, absolute horror in her eyes. “You sold out our family.”
“I secured my future, Isabella,” Vanessa sneered. “Something you were never brave enough to do.”
Vanessa raised her gun, her finger tightening on the trigger.
“Kill them all,” Vanessa ordered her six mercenaries. “Leave no witnesses.”
The men racked their shotguns in unison.
I closed my eyes, grabbing Isabella’s hand, bracing for the deafening roar of gunfire that would end our lives.
But the gunfire didn't come from the mercenaries.
It came from the darkness above them.
THWIP. THWIP. THWIP.
Three suppressed shots, fired with impossible speed and precision, echoed softly in the rain.
The three mercenaries standing to the right of Vanessa dropped instantly to the muddy grass, perfect, dark holes appearing in the center of their foreheads.
Vanessa screamed in shock, dropping to a crouch, her pristine white coat instantly ruined by the mud.
The remaining three mercenaries panicked, aiming their shotguns wildly into the dark, rain-swept trees bordering the garden.
“Where is the shooter?!” one of the mercenaries yelled in heavily accented Russian.
“Up there!” another shouted, pointing toward the heavy stone balcony of the master bedroom overlooking the courtyard.
Before they could fire, a heavy, cylindrical object arched gracefully through the air from the balcony, landing perfectly in the center of the remaining mercenaries.
It was a flashbang grenade.
BANG.
The explosive burst of blinding white light and deafening sound incapacitated the remaining guards instantly. They dropped their weapons, clutching their eyes and ears, screaming in agony.
Luca didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.
He lunged forward, closing the distance between him and Vanessa in three massive strides.
Vanessa, temporarily blinded by the flash, raised her pistol blindly, firing a wild shot into the air.
Luca grabbed her wrist, twisting it violently. The pistol clattered into the mud. He delivered a brutal, precise strike to her jaw, sending her crashing back into the side of the black SUV.
Vanessa slumped to the ground, unconscious.
The garden fell silent, save for the crackling of the fire in the west wing and the groans of the incapacitated mercenaries.
I opened my eyes, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I couldn't believe we were still alive.
I looked up toward the stone balcony, desperate to see who had just saved us from a Bratva execution squad.
A figure stepped out from the shadows of the balcony, illuminated by the orange glow of the burning mansion.
He was holding a long, sleek sniper rifle. He was dressed entirely in black tactical gear, rain dripping from his broad shoulders.
He rested the rifle on the stone balustrade and looked down at us.
It was Marco.
Luca’s head of security. The man who had pointed a gun at me in the sub-basement ten minutes ago.
“Marco?!” Luca shouted, absolute confusion breaking his iron composure.
Marco didn't answer immediately. He slung the sniper rifle over his back, secured a climbing rope to the balcony railing, and rappelled down the stone wall with practiced, military efficiency.
He landed softly in the mud, drawing his sidearm and quickly double-tapping the three incapacitated mercenaries, silencing them permanently.
He walked over to Luca, holstering his weapon.
“You’re late, Boss,” Marco said, a grim, blood-stained smile crossing his face.
“You just saved our lives,” Luca said, staring at his oldest friend. “Ten minutes ago, you were going to execute Emily in the cellar on orders from the Police Commissioner.”
“I lied, Boss,” Marco stated simply.
My breath caught in my throat. “What?”
Marco looked at me, a profound, heavy sorrow in his eyes.
“I didn't corner you in the cellar to kill you, Amelia,” Marco said, using my real name. “I cornered you to get you away from the main house before Vanessa’s kill-squads arrived. I needed you to confess your true identity to Luca, so he would know why we have to protect you.”
“I don't understand,” I stammered, my mind struggling to process the rapid reversals. “If you don't work for the Commissioner... who do you work for?”
Marco reached into his tactical vest.
He pulled out a heavy, tarnished silver badge attached to a leather lanyard. He let it drop against his chest.
It was an FBI badge.
“My name is Special Agent Marco Rossi,” Marco said quietly. “I’m an undercover operative for the FBI Internal Affairs Division.”

He looked at Luca, the weight of a five-year deception heavy on his shoulders.
“And five years ago, Luca, your father hired me to help him take down the dirty cops and corrupt federal agents who eventually murdered him.”
