Chapter 11 - THE WHITE ORCHIDS

I stared at the massive arrangement of white orchids sitting on the glass counter. They were breathtaking, elegant, and understated.

They were also my absolute favorite flower. A detail very few people knew about me.

"Who delivered these, Chloe?" I asked, walking over to examine the delicate petals.

"A courier," Chloe smiled knowingly, leaning against the register. "There's a card."

I reached into the flowers and pulled out a small, thick envelope. My heart gave a strange, unexpected flutter. I had spent the last three months completely focused on rebuilding my life, shielding my heart behind a fortress of work and legal battles. I hadn't even considered the idea of romance.

I opened the envelope.

The handwriting was sharp, elegant, and masculine.

Savannah, I know this is incredibly forward, but I have never met a woman who handles a hostage crisis and a corporate hostile takeover with such grace. I would be honored if you would allow me to take you to dinner this Friday. — Agent Marcus Thorne, FBI.

I felt a sudden, hot flush rise to my cheeks.

Marcus Thorne. The lead tactical agent who had breached the warehouse. He was tall, with piercing green eyes and a calm, commanding presence that had immediately made me feel safe in the midst of absolute chaos.

We had spent hours together during the debriefings. He had been professional, sharp, and deeply respectful. But I had caught him looking at me a few times with an intensity that went far beyond official FBI business.

"Well?" Chloe practically vibrated with excitement. "Who is it?"

"It's... a friend," I lied poorly, trying to suppress a massive smile.

"A friend who sends fifty-dollar orchids?" Chloe laughed. "Savannah, you're glowing."

I shook my head, walking back to my office with the card. I sat down at my desk and pulled out my phone. I had his number saved from the investigation.

I typed out a message.

Agent Thorne. The orchids are beautiful. Friday at 7 PM works for me.

His reply came less than a minute later.

It’s Marcus. And I’ll pick you up at 7. Dress warm, I’m taking you somewhere special.

I set my phone down, feeling a lightness in my chest I hadn't felt in years.

The rest of the week flew by in a blur of productivity. Maya and I finalized the new winter line, and sales were tracking twenty percent higher than the previous year.

When Friday evening finally arrived, I stood in front of the mirror in my apartment, smoothing down the emerald green dress I had designed myself. I paired it with my mother's simple pearl earrings.

The doorbell rang exactly at 7:00 PM.

I took a deep breath, grabbed my coat, and opened the door.

Marcus was standing there, wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit. He didn't look like a tactical federal agent tonight. He looked incredibly handsome, holding a single white orchid.

"Wow," Marcus breathed, his green eyes scanning me with genuine awe. "You look beautiful, Savannah."

"Thank you, Marcus," I smiled, accepting the flower. "You clean up nicely yourself."

He led me to his car, opening the door for me.

He didn't take me to a loud, flashy restaurant where people went to be seen. He drove us to a quiet, upscale Italian place tucked away in a historic neighborhood, with dim lighting, acoustic music, and total privacy.

For the first time in my adult life, I wasn't the one managing everything. Marcus ordered the wine, engaged in deep, intelligent conversation, and actually listened to me when I spoke about my passions, my business, and my dreams.

He didn't want my money. He didn't want to control me. He just wanted to know me.

As we walked out of the restaurant hours later, the cool November wind whipped down the street. I shivered slightly.

Without missing a beat, Marcus took off his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders.

"Thank you," I murmured, pulling the warm fabric around me.

"I've seen you take down an organized crime ring, Savannah," Marcus smiled softly, looking down at me under the glow of a streetlamp. "I know you don't need anyone to protect you. But I'd like to be the guy who keeps you warm anyway."

He gently reached out, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear. His touch was electric.

He leaned in, and our lips met. It was a slow, sweet, perfect kiss. A promise of something real.

But as we pulled apart, my phone began to buzz frantically in my purse.

May you like

It wasn't just a text. It was the emergency alarm app connected to the security cameras at my flagship boutique.
