Chapter 12 - THE FINAL THREAD

"What's wrong?" Marcus asked, his tactical instincts instantly returning as he saw the color drain from my face.

"The boutique alarm," I said, staring at the live feed on my phone.

The camera showed the back alley behind my store. A figure dressed in a dark hoodie was standing near the reinforced steel door, pouring a clear liquid from a red plastic canister against the brick wall.

Gasoline.

"Get in the car," Marcus ordered, his voice shifting instantly to pure authority.

We tore through the streets of Atlanta, Marcus throwing a flashing blue siren onto the dashboard of his unmarked car.

"Who would be doing this?" Marcus asked, his eyes locked on the road. "Brenda and Donald are in custody. Brandon is in federal lockup."

"I don't know," I panicked, watching the feed. The figure was struggling with a lighter in the wind.

We skidded into the alley behind the boutique just as the figure finally managed to spark the lighter.

Marcus threw the car in park, drew his weapon, and leaped out.

"FBI! DROP IT!" Marcus roared, aiming his weapon at the hooded figure.

The figure shrieked in terror, dropping the lighter onto the wet pavement—mercifully, it missed the gasoline puddle. The person threw their hands in the air, the hood falling back.

I stepped out of the car, my heart pounding.

It wasn't a cartel enforcer. It wasn't a hardened criminal.

It was a woman. The auburn-haired woman from the bar? No, Maya was safe at home.

I walked closer, the headlights of Marcus's car illuminating her face.

It was the woman who had caught my bouquet at the wedding. A distant cousin of Brandon's named Clara.

"Clara?" I asked, utterly bewildered. "What are you doing?"

Clara was sobbing hysterically, her hands trembling in the air.

"I had to!" Clara cried. "Brenda called me from the county jail! She said if I didn't burn your store down, she would tell my husband about the money I stole from his business to invest in Donald's fake clothes!"

I stared at her, feeling a profound mixture of pity and exhaustion.

Even from behind bars, Doña Brenda was trying to ruin my life, weaponizing the secrets of her own family members to strike at me.

"Put your hands on the wall," Marcus ordered, holstering his weapon and pulling out his handcuffs. He read her rights and secured her in the back of the car.

He walked back over to me, looking at the puddle of gasoline.

"Brenda just added arson conspiracy and extortion to her sentence," Marcus said grimly. "She's going to die in prison."

"Good," I said, feeling no sympathy left for the matriarch of the Whitmore family.

Marcus turned to me, his eyes softening. "I'm sorry our date ended like this."

I looked at the man standing in front of me. He was strong, protective, and firmly on my side. I looked at the brick wall of my boutique, smelling faintly of gasoline but still standing tall and unbroken.

Just like me.

"It's okay, Marcus," I smiled, stepping closer to him and wrapping my arms around his waist. "We have the rest of our lives to go on normal dates."

Marcus smiled, wrapping his strong arms around me and kissing the top of my head.

Three years later, the Marietta house where Doña Brenda had tried to humiliate me was sold to developers and torn down.

In its place, they built a beautiful community park.

I sat on a wooden bench in that park, watching the autumn leaves fall.

A little boy ran past me, laughing loudly as he chased a soccer ball. It was Leo. He was nine years old now, thriving and happy, completely untouched by the toxic legacy of his biological father.

Maya was sitting next to me on the bench, reviewing fabric swatches for our new European expansion. She was now the Vice President of Savannah's Boutiques.

"I think the navy blue silk is going to be the bestseller in Paris," Maya noted, tapping her pen against her clipboard.

"I agree," I smiled, taking a sip of my decaf coffee.

"Savannah! Look!"

I turned.

Walking down the paved path was Marcus, wearing casual weekend clothes. He was holding the hand of a beautiful two-year-old girl with my dark hair and his bright green eyes.

"Mommy!" my daughter yelled, breaking away from Marcus and running into my arms.

I lifted her up, burying my face in her sweet-smelling hair.

Marcus sat down next to me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and kissing my cheek.

I looked at my successful business partner, my beautiful daughter, and my loving husband.

The Whitmore family had tried to treat me like a servant, demanding I eat their leftovers in the kitchen while they feasted on my hard work.

They thought they could break me.

Instead, they gave me the fire I needed to burn their empire to the ground and build my own beautiful, untouchable life from the ashes.
