Chapter 4 - THE PEARL NECKLACE IN THE GRAVEL

The world seemed to stop spinning.

Luca’s face went completely blank, a terrifying mask of absolute calm before a storm. “Where are they?”

“The East Wing gardens, sir,” Marco said, gripping his weapon tightly. “Bellini’s men ambushed Mrs. Moretti while she was walking back from the kitchens. They have her in the back of his SUV. He’s demanding you come out alone.”

“Stay here,” Luca ordered Marco, pointing at me and my father. “Do not let them out of your sight.”

Luca turned and sprinted out of the dining room, his suit jacket flying behind him.

I couldn't stay. I looked at my dad, who was already nodding. We ran out the door right behind Marco, following Luca toward the East Wing.

The night air was cool, the scent of blooming jasmine heavy in the garden.

We burst through the French doors and stopped on the stone terrace.

Fifty yards away, parked haphazardly on the manicured lawn, was a massive black SUV. Four armed men stood around the vehicle, their weapons raised.

Standing in front of the SUV, using Teresa Moretti as a human shield, was Richard Bellini. He held a gun pressed tightly against her temple.

Teresa looked terrified, but she held her chin high, her hands resting calmly on Richard’s arm.

“You embarrassed my daughter, Luca!” Richard screamed, his face red with manic fury. “You broke an alliance! You made us look like fools in front of the entire city!”

Luca stopped twenty feet away from them. He didn't draw a weapon. He stood tall, his hands empty at his sides, projecting an aura of lethal stillness.

“Let my mother go, Richard,” Luca said, his voice carrying clearly over the night air. “This is between you and me. She has nothing to do with it.”

“She insulted Vanessa!” Richard roared. “And you chose a maid over our family! If you want your mother back, you are going to sign the merger documents right now, and you are going to beg my daughter for forgiveness on your knees.”

Vanessa stepped out from behind the SUV. She looked utterly deranged, her red gown torn at the hem from the gravel, her makeup smeared. She was holding a heavy manila folder—the merger contracts.

“Do it, Luca,” Vanessa sneered. “Or we take everything.”

I stood on the terrace, my heart hammering in my chest. Luca was trapped. If he drew a weapon, they would shoot Teresa. If he signed the papers, the Bellinis would own his empire, and they would likely kill him anyway.

My father suddenly stepped forward, moving past Marco before the security chief could stop him.

“Hey!” Dad shouted, walking slowly down the stone steps toward the grass.

Everyone froze. Richard Bellini’s eyes darted to the gray-haired carpenter walking toward him with his hands raised.

“Get back, old man!” Richard yelled, tightening his grip on Teresa.

“I’m just a carpenter, Mr. Bellini,” Dad said calmly, continuing his slow, steady walk. “I don't have a gun. I’m nobody. But I know a thing or two about building foundations.”

Luca shot a desperate look at my father, silently begging him to stop, but Dad didn't look at him.

“Your foundation is cracked, Richard,” Dad said, stopping ten feet away from the SUV. “You’re acting out of desperation. If you pull that trigger, Luca’s men will gun you down before Teresa’s body hits the grass. You won’t live to spend a dime of that merger money.”

Richard sneered, pressing the gun harder against Teresa’s head. “I have thirty men waiting outside the main gates. If I don't walk out of here, they burn this estate to the ground.”

“Maybe,” Dad nodded slowly. “But you still die tonight. Is the money worth dying for?”

For a split second, Richard hesitated. The manic certainty in his eyes wavered.

That fraction of a second was all Luca needed.

Luca didn't pull a gun. He moved with terrifying, blinding speed. He lunged forward, closing the distance in two massive strides, and grabbed the barrel of Richard’s gun, wrenching it upward.

A shot fired into the night sky, deafeningly loud.

Teresa screamed, dropping to the grass.

Luca twisted Richard’s wrist with a sickening crack, disarming him instantly. Before the other four armed men could react, Marco and a dozen of Luca’s hidden security guards emerged from the shadows of the hedges, their weapons drawn and laser sights pointed directly at the Bellini men’s chests.

“Drop them!” Marco roared.

The four men looked at the laser sights painting their chests and immediately dropped their weapons, raising their hands.

Richard Bellini fell to his knees, clutching his broken wrist, howling in pain.

Vanessa screamed, dropping the manila folder and backing away in sheer terror.

Luca didn't look at them. He dropped the gun and immediately knelt on the grass next to his mother.

“Mom,” Luca breathed, frantically checking her over. “Are you hurt? Did he hit you?”

Teresa was trembling violently, but she shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “I’m okay, Luca. I’m okay.”

My father rushed forward and helped Teresa sit up, gently supporting her back. “You were very brave, Teresa. Just breathe.”

Luca looked at my father, his dark eyes filled with overwhelming gratitude. Dad had provided the distraction that saved her life.

“Take them,” Luca ordered Marco, pointing at Richard and Vanessa. His voice was devoid of all mercy. “Lock them in the East Gate holding cells until the Commission decides their fate. They are finished.”

As the guards dragged a screaming Vanessa and her father away into the night, the chaotic adrenaline finally began to drain from the garden.

I ran down the steps and threw my arms around my dad, burying my face in his chest, sobbing with relief. He held me tight, kissing the top of my head.

Luca gently helped his mother to her feet. Teresa brushed the grass off her elegant dress, taking a deep, shaky breath to compose herself.

But as she smoothed the front of her gown, she gasped.

“My necklace,” Teresa whispered, her hands flying to her bare neck.

I looked down. Lying in the gravel near where she had fallen was her beautiful, antique pearl necklace. The clasp was broken, the pearls scattered in the dirt.

“I’ll get it, Mom,” Luca said gently, kneeling down to gather the pearls.

“No, wait,” Teresa said, her voice suddenly urgent. She knelt down beside him, ignoring the dirt ruining her dress, and frantically sifted through the gravel.

She wasn't looking for the pearls.

She picked up a small, tarnished silver key that had been hidden on the strand behind the pearls.

Teresa looked at the key, her face pale in the moonlight. She looked up at Luca.

“He took it,” Teresa whispered, her voice trembling with a new, profound terror.

Luca frowned, looking at the small key. “Who took what, Mom?”

May you like

Teresa closed her eyes, tears spilling over her lashes.

“Richard Bellini didn't kidnap me to force a merger, Luca,” she sobbed. “While he was holding the gun to my head, he ripped the locket off my neck. He took the master key to your father’s safe.”
