Chapter 9 - THE BOARDING PASS TO SWITZERLAND

Luca stared at the boarding pass.

His hands began to shake, not from fear, but from a rage so profound it seemed to pull the oxygen out of the room.

“She was going to take him,” Luca whispered.

Vanessa’s entire plan clicked into place. The cruelty. The manipulation. The constant attempts to make Noah look crazy.

She didn’t just want to send him to boarding school. She wanted to kidnap the heir to the Moretti empire. She was going to take Noah to Switzerland, using him as the ultimate bargaining chip against Luca. The Bellini family would have held Luca by the throat forever.

Noah looked at his father with wide, frightened eyes. “Dad? Was she going to make me leave?”

Luca dropped the ticket. He pulled Noah into his arms, wrapping him in a fierce, unbreakable embrace.

“No,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “Nobody is ever taking you away from me. I promise you, Noah. I promise on my life.”

Noah buried his face in his father’s chest. The tension in the little boy’s body finally broke. He cried, not the silent, scared tears of a child trying to hide, but the loud, relieving tears of a child who finally feels safe.

I stood watching them, wiping my own tears away.

This was the happy ending Noah deserved. The truth was completely out. His dignity was restored. He wasn't the difficult, lying child Vanessa made him out to be. He was the hero who had saved his own father.

Luca held him until Noah’s breathing slowed. Then, Luca stood up and looked at me.

“Emma,” Luca said. The authority of the Boss was gone. He just looked like a grateful father. “I owe you a debt I can never repay.”

“You don’t owe me anything,” I said softly. “I just told the truth.”

“You risked your job, your sister’s home, your safety, all for my son.” Luca took a step toward me. “I meant what I said downstairs. You’re not a maid anymore.”

I smiled faintly. “I’m not sure what else I’m qualified to do.”

“You’re family,” Luca said firmly. “From this moment on, you and Chloe are under my protection. Your sister’s tuition is paid for. She goes to whatever college she wants. And you…”

Luca paused, looking deeply into my eyes.

“…you stay here. Not as staff. As Noah’s guardian. As my trusted friend. You manage this household. You sit at my table. Nobody will ever look down on you again.”

My breath caught. It was a fairy tale. A life my mother had always dreamed of for us.

“I accept,” I whispered.

Noah ran over and hugged me around the waist. I hugged him back tightly, resting my chin on top of his head.

The sun was beginning to rise outside the bulletproof windows. The storm had broken. Pale morning light filtered into the room, washing away the shadows of the longest night of our lives.

A knock came at the door.

It was Daniel. He stepped inside, looking exhausted but victorious.

“Boss,” Daniel said. “It’s over. Salvatore just called. Vanessa has been handed over to the FBI. Frank confessed everything on tape. The Bellini leadership has been arrested. Chicago belongs to you.”

Luca nodded slowly. He looked around the room. At Noah. At Chloe. At me.

“No,” Luca corrected him softly. “Chicago doesn't matter. This room is everything that matters.”

It was the perfect end to the nightmare.

The villains were gone. The innocent were protected. The family was whole.

I walked over to the window and looked out at the massive estate grounds, feeling a profound sense of peace for the first time in eleven months.

But as I looked down at the driveway, a black town car pulled through the front gates.

It wasn't a mafia car. It wasn't the police.

It was a sleek, conservative sedan.

A man in a sharp grey suit stepped out. He was carrying a leather briefcase.

He looked up at the window, directly at me.

Daniel walked up behind me and frowned. “Who is that?”

“I don't know,” Luca said, joining us at the window.

A minute later, the intercom on the wall buzzed.

Luca pressed the button. “Yes?”

The butler’s voice crackled through. “Mr. Moretti. There is a man here to see you. A lawyer. He says he has an urgent delivery for Miss Emma.”

I froze. “For me?”

May you like

“He says,” the butler continued, “he is executing the final instructions in the will of your late wife.”
