Chapter 10 - THE LETTER FROM THE GRAVE

The library on the first floor was filled with morning sunlight, but the air felt heavy.
Luca, Noah, Chloe, and I sat on the large leather sofas.
The lawyer sat across from us. He opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick, sealed envelope. The wax seal on the back bore the Moretti family crest.
"Mr. Moretti," the lawyer said respectfully. "Five years ago, your wife entrusted my firm with a locked safety deposit box. She gave strict instructions that it was only to be opened if Vanessa Bellini was ever removed from your life."
Luca’s jaw tightened. "My wife planned this?"
"Your wife was playing a very long game, sir," the lawyer replied. "She knew she might not survive the Bellinis. She set conditions to protect her son, and to reward those who stood by him."
The lawyer slid the envelope across the coffee table toward me.
"This is for you, Emma."
My hands trembled as I picked it up. I broke the wax seal.
Inside was a letter written on heavy, cream-colored paper.
I unfolded it and began to read aloud, my voice shaking.
Dear Emma,
If you are reading this, it means I am gone, and you have survived the storm I left behind. It also means you stood up for my son when he needed it most. Thank you.
I knew your mother, Mary Anne. She was the kindest soul I ever met. When I found out the Bellinis were tracking Chloe, I used my resources to quietly divert their attention. I made sure they believed the money your father stole was buried somewhere else. But the truth is, Emma, your father didn't steal the money for himself.
I stopped reading. I looked up at Luca in shock.
"Keep reading," Luca urged softly.
He stole it for me, the letter continued. Your father was secretly working for my grandfather. The Bellinis had extorted our family for decades. Your father, Vincent, drained their accounts to cripple them and gave the money back to us. It cost him his life.
I owe your family a debt of blood and honor. You were never meant to be a maid, Emma. You were meant to be royalty.
Attached to this letter is the deed to the Bellini estate in New York, which our lawyers quietly purchased under a shell corporation using their own stolen money. It is yours now. Sell it, live in it, burn it down. It belongs to you and Chloe.
And one last thing.
In the bottom of the envelope is a key. It belongs to a vault in Zurich. Inside is the thirty million dollars your father took from them. It is clean. It is untraceable. It is your inheritance.
Protect Noah for me. And let Luca know that I forgive him for being blind, because I know his heart was always good.
With eternal gratitude,
Isabella Moretti.
I dropped the letter.
I couldn't breathe.
Thirty million dollars. A massive estate in New York.
I wasn't a struggling maid trying to pay half the rent. I was an heiress to a fortune my father had died to secure, protected by a queen who had died to save us all.
Chloe covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.
Luca leaned back against the sofa, closing his eyes as a single tear escaped. He had finally heard from his wife one last time. She had forgiven him. She had saved them all from the grave.
"You're rich, Emma," Noah whispered, his eyes wide.
I looked at the little boy. The child I loved like my own.
"No, Noah," I said softly, reaching out to hold his hand. "I was rich the moment you let me be your friend."
The lawyer stood up, bowed respectfully, and left the room.
We sat in silence, letting the magnitude of the morning wash over us.
Then, Luca reached into his pocket.
He pulled out something small and silver.
"Emma," Luca said. "Isabella left one more thing for you. She gave this to me the day before she died. She told me to give it to the woman who would eventually save our son."
He held out his hand.
In his palm was a beautiful, delicate silver bracelet, lined with small diamonds.
I hesitated, overwhelmed. "Luca... I can't take that."
May you like
"You have to," Luca smiled. "It's a family heirloom."
