Chapter 2 - THE BOARDING SCHOOL BROCHURE

The silence in the dining room was absolute, broken only by the delicate, haunting melody still tinkling from the little wooden music box in Luca’s hand.
Fifty wealthy guests sat frozen, their expensive wine glasses lowered, watching the immaculate façade of the Bellini-Moretti merger shatter into a million jagged pieces.
Vanessa’s face lost all its color. Her perfect red lips parted, but no sound came out. She took a half-step backward, her diamond heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.
Luca Moretti didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell.
The quiet, lethal stillness that settled over him was infinitely more terrifying.
"Answer him, Vanessa," Luca commanded, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. "Where did you tell my nine-year-old son he was going to live?"
Vanessa’s eyes darted frantically around the room, desperate for an ally she wouldn't find.
"Luca, darling, you’re taking the words of a child completely out of context," she tried, forcing a tight, patronizing smile. "I simply mentioned that some newlywed couples appreciate a little transition time. I thought perhaps a summer camp, or a short term at a preparatory academy—"
"A preparatory academy?" Luca interrupted softly.
Noah shrank against his father’s leg. "She gave me a book with pictures of it, Daddy. She said it was in Switzerland."
My breath caught in my throat. Switzerland. She wasn't just trying to send him to a local boarding school. She was trying to exile a grieving nine-year-old boy to another continent.
Luca closed his eyes. The muscle in his jaw ticked violently.
When he opened them, the darkness in his gaze was absolute.
"Silvio," Luca said quietly, without looking away from his fiancée.
A massive man in a tailored dark suit stepped out from the shadows near the double doors. Silvio was Luca’s head of security, a man whose presence usually meant someone was leaving the property against their will.
"Yes, Boss," Silvio grunted.
"Go up to Vanessa’s suite," Luca ordered smoothly. "Find the brochure she gave my son. Bring it to me."
"Luca, you cannot search my private rooms!" Vanessa shrieked, her composed mask finally slipping, revealing the frantic, calculating predator underneath.
"I can do whatever I want in my own house," Luca replied coldly.
Silvio nodded and disappeared into the grand hallway.
Vanessa’s chest heaved. She looked at me, pure, unadulterated hatred flashing in her eyes. She blamed me for starting this. She blamed me for reading the Italian inscription and breaking the delicate web of lies she had spun around Noah.
"This is ridiculous," Vanessa snapped, crossing her arms defensively. "I am trying to prepare this family for the reality of our marriage! Claire is dead, Luca! She has been dead for four years! You cannot build a new life with me if you are constantly dragging the ghost of your first wife through the halls of this mansion!"
"My son is not a ghost," Luca stated, his voice dropping into a register of pure ice. "He is my flesh and blood. He is the heir to this family. And he stays where I stay."
"He is a damaged, clingy child who needs discipline!" Vanessa yelled, her true colors finally bleeding out for the entire room to see. "I will not spend my first year of marriage playing stepmother to a boy who cries every time he sees a wooden box!"
A collective gasp echoed around the dining table.
I instinctively stepped forward, moving closer to Noah, wanting nothing more than to shield the little boy from the absolute venom spilling from this woman’s mouth.
Luca didn't flinch.
"You think a mother's love is a weakness," Luca said softly, staring at the woman he was supposed to marry in three weeks. "You think grief makes him damaged."
Before Vanessa could answer, Silvio marched back into the dining room.
He didn't just have a brochure. He carried a sleek, silver tablet.
"I couldn't find a brochure, Boss," Silvio reported, his face grim. "But her iPad was open on her desk. She wasn't just looking at preparatory academies."
Silvio handed the tablet to Luca.
Luca looked at the screen. The terrifying calm shattered, replaced by a sudden, violent rage that made the veins in his neck bulge.
"What is this, Vanessa?" Luca demanded, his voice cracking like a whip.
Vanessa’s bravado completely evaporated. She stared at the tablet, realizing exactly what Silvio had found.
Luca turned the screen around so fifty guests could see it.
It wasn't an application for a boarding school.
It was an application for a long-term, high-security psychiatric facility for children in Geneva.
My stomach bottomed out. A psychiatric facility. She wasn't just trying to send him away to school. She was trying to have him medically committed to a facility on the other side of the world, effectively stripping Luca of his custody rights by declaring the child mentally unfit.
"He needs help, Luca!" Vanessa panicked, stepping backward. "He talks to dead people! He won't let go of that box! The doctors I consulted said it was early-onset psychosis! I was trying to save you the embarrassment of dealing with a broken heir!"
"My son is grieving!" Luca roared, the sudden explosion of volume making several guests jump in their seats. "He is grieving the mother you have been actively trying to erase!"
Luca threw the tablet onto the marble floor. The screen shattered violently, mirroring the destruction of their engagement.
"Get out," Luca whispered, pointing a shaking finger toward the front doors.
"Luca, you need my family," Vanessa threatened, her voice shaking with a mixture of terror and rage. "The Bellini syndicate controls the ports! If you throw me out, my father will consider it an act of war! You will lose millions!"
"I don't care if I lose everything," Luca replied, pulling Noah tightly against his side. "Get out of my house before I have Silvio throw you onto the street."
Vanessa glared at him, her chest heaving. She looked at Noah, then at me.
"You will regret this, Luca," Vanessa promised, her voice dripping with poison. "Both of you."
She turned on her diamond heel and stormed out of the dining room, her red satin gown trailing behind her like spilled blood.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Luca stood in the center of the ruined engagement dinner, breathing heavily. He looked around at the fifty wealthy guests, his business partners, his captains.
"The dinner is over," Luca announced quietly. "Please leave."
Within ten minutes, the grand dining room was completely empty, save for Luca, Noah, and myself.
Noah was crying softly into his father’s jacket. Luca knelt on the floor, holding his son, rocking him gently.
I began quietly picking up the shattered pieces of the tablet, trying to make myself invisible, wanting to give them privacy.
But as I reached for a piece of glass, a sharp, metallic object caught my eye beneath the edge of a heavy velvet curtain near the window.
I frowned, reaching under the heavy fabric.
It was a small, black digital audio recorder.
A red light was blinking steadily on the side.
It was actively recording.
My blood ran cold. Vanessa hadn't just been humiliated. She had been recording the entire evening.
"Mr. Moretti," I whispered, holding the small device up.
Luca looked up, his eyes red. He saw the blinking red light.
He gently set Noah back from his chest, standing up quickly and taking the recorder from my hand. He pressed the stop button, his jaw clenching tight.
"Why would she record a dinner party?" I asked, my voice trembling.
Luca stared at the device, the lethal mafia boss fully emerging from the ashes of the devastated father.
"Because she didn't plan on being humiliated tonight," Luca said softly. "She planned on pushing Noah until he had a breakdown in front of fifty witnesses. She was collecting audio evidence to prove to a judge that my son was mentally unstable."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "To send him to the facility in Geneva?"
"Yes," Luca nodded grimly.
"But why?" I asked. "Why go through all that trouble? Why not just break off the engagement if she didn't want a stepson?"
Luca looked at the little wooden music box still resting on the table.
"Because of the prenuptial agreement," Luca explained, his voice turning to ice. "If Vanessa broke the engagement, she got nothing. If I broke it without cause, she got twenty million dollars and ten percent of my shipping routes."
He looked back at the recorder in his hand.
"But if she could prove my heir was mentally incompetent," Luca said, the horrifying reality settling over us, "the Bellini family could legally argue that my entire syndicate was unstable, allowing them to petition the Commission to take over my territory to 'protect' the business."
Vanessa wasn't just trying to get rid of a child. She was executing a hostile takeover of the Moretti empire, using a grieving nine-year-old boy as her pawn.
Before Luca could say another word, the heavy double doors of the dining room burst open.
Silvio stood in the doorway, his face pale, holding his earpiece.
"Boss," Silvio gasped, completely out of breath.
"What is it, Silvio?" Luca demanded.
Silvio looked at Noah, then at Luca.
"Vanessa didn't leave the property, Boss," Silvio reported, his voice tight with panic. "She went down to the underground garage. She took the armored SUV."
"Let her take it," Luca dismissed coldly. "I don't care."
May you like
"You don't understand, Boss," Silvio swallowed hard. "She didn't just take the SUV. She took Claire’s ashes from the family mausoleum in the garden."
Noah screamed.
