Chapter 2 - THE LOCKET IN THE APRON POCKET

Vanessa stared at the twenty-six faces watching her.

Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The clinking of silverware had stopped. Even the waitstaff stood frozen against the silk-lined walls.

Matteo didn't blink. “I asked you a question, Vanessa. Explain it to my daughter.”

“Matteo, you’re making a scene over a little frosting,” Vanessa forced a laugh, though her eyes darted nervously toward the wealthy investors at the table. “I simply expect proper decorum. Sophie was overstepping.”

“By having a birthday?” Matteo asked quietly.

“By stealing from your family.”

The entire room inhaled sharply.

Sophie dropped the broken pieces of cake. “What? No. I would never—”

“Oh, spare us the innocent act,” Vanessa snapped. She reached into her expensive designer clutch and pulled out a delicate gold locket. It was tarnished, old, and completely out of place in her perfectly manicured hand.

Matteo went rigid.

“I found this in her apron pocket in the laundry room this morning,” Vanessa declared, holding the necklace high for the guests to see. “It belonged to your late wife, Matteo. I recognized it from the portrait in the study.”

Sophie’s face drained of color. Her hands flew to her empty apron pocket.

“It’s not what you think,” Sophie pleaded, looking desperately at Matteo. “Please, sir.”

Vanessa scoffed. “You prey on a motherless child, bake a pathetic little cake to gain sympathy, and rob the family blind while they sleep.” She looked at Matteo, her confidence returning. “Fire her. Or call the police. That’s what we do with thieves.”

Matteo slowly took the locket from Vanessa’s hand. His thumb brushed over the intricate floral engraving.

He didn't look angry. He looked broken.

“Sophie,” Matteo said, his voice dangerously low. “Is it true? Did you take my wife’s locket?”

Sophie opened her mouth, tears spilling over her lashes, but before she could defend herself, Rosie stepped between them.

The seven-year-old placed her small, frosting-covered hands on her father’s knees.

“She didn't take it, Daddy,” Rosie said loudly.

Matteo looked down. “Rosie?”

“I gave it to her.”

Vanessa’s smug smile vanished. “Don't lie for the maid, Rosie.”

“I’m not lying!” Rosie cried, her little fists clenching. “Mommy told me to give it to the person who makes me feel safe. I gave it to Sophie for her birthday because you scare me, Vanessa!”

A murmur rippled through the guests.

Matteo stared at his daughter, then turned his dark, unreadable eyes back to his fiancée.

Vanessa’s face turned pale. “Matteo, the child is clearly confused. And regardless, that locket is a family heirloom. It shouldn't be in the hands of a servant who associates with the Moretti cartel.”

The silence that followed was deafening.

Matteo stepped closer to Vanessa. “What did you just say?”

Vanessa reached back into her clutch. Her hands were shaking now, but she pulled out a crumpled, yellowed train ticket.

“I wasn't looking for the necklace when I searched her room,” Vanessa whispered. “I was looking for this.”
