Chapter 12 - THE FINAL PIECE

Sophie whipped her head around.
Standing in the shadows of the train station was a young woman wrapped in a heavy winter coat. She had Sophie’s eyes. Sophie’s hair.
It was the girl from the photograph. Lily.
“Lily?” Sophie choked out, taking a step forward.
Lily flinched, stepping back. She looked exhausted, haunted by years of running. “Arthur told me you hated me. He told me our mother chose you and threw me away.”
“He lied,” Sophie cried, the tears flowing freely now. “Mom never stopped loving you. She died trying to save Elena, and Elena died trying to save you!”
Lily stared at her, the walls she had built for twenty years beginning to crack. “I tried to warn Elena that night. I was the one who called her and told her to meet me here at the station. But Arthur found out. He sent Vanessa.”
Matteo stepped forward, keeping his hands visible and unthreatening. “Lily. Arthur is in federal prison. Vanessa is gone. The cartel is dismantled. No one is hunting you anymore.”
Lily looked at the terrifying mob boss she had heard stories about for years. But she didn't see a monster. She saw a husband fiercely protecting his wife.
“I have nowhere to go,” Lily whispered, her tough exterior finally crumbling. “I don't know how to be a normal person.”
Sophie didn't hesitate. She ran across the corridor and threw her arms around the sister she never knew she had.
Lily stiffened for a second, then collapsed into Sophie’s embrace, sobbing into her shoulder.
“You’re coming home with us,” Sophie said fiercely. “I own a bakery now. We make a lot of cakes. I think you’re going to like it.”
Later that evening, the DeLuca mansion was filled with warmth.
The grand dining room, once the site of Vanessa’s cruel humiliation, was now filled with laughter.
Lily sat at the table, wearing one of Sophie’s soft sweaters, looking around the magnificent room with wide eyes. Rosie sat right next to her, eagerly explaining the rules of a board game.
Mrs. Parker brought out a massive plate of fresh pastries, smiling as she set them down.
Matteo stood in the doorway, watching his house finally become a home. He walked up behind Sophie, wrapping his arms around her as they watched Lily laugh at one of Rosie’s jokes.
“She’s safe,” Matteo whispered in Sophie’s ear.
Sophie leaned back against his chest, feeling the steady, calming beat of his heart.
The secrets were uncovered. The past was finally put to rest.

She looked at her sister, her daughter, and the man who had traded his dark empire for a life in the light.
“We all are,” Sophie smiled.
