Chapter 12 - THE LEGACY

“Elias?” Sebastian growled, stepping in front of me protectively. “You’re supposed to be in a federal penitentiary.”
Elias smiled a cold, hollow smile.
“Money talks, Sebastian. Especially Julian’s hidden accounts. It took me six months to bribe the right guards, but I got out.”
Elias raised a pistol, aiming it at Sebastian.
“I followed you here. I knew you’d eventually look for Antonio’s final secret.”
Elias looked at the open safety deposit box.
“A coat and a rosary? How pathetic.”
“It’s proof that my father knew how to love,” Sebastian said fiercely. “Something your father never taught you.”
Elias’s eyes darkened with rage.
“My father left me to rot in a basement for thirty years! Don't you dare talk to me about family!”
Elias cocked the pistol.
“I’m taking the Romano empire today, Sebastian. And I’m leaving you in the dust.”
Elias prepared to pull the trigger.
But he made one fatal mistake.
He forgot about the maid.
I didn't scream. I didn't freeze.
I grabbed the heavy silver rosary from the box and threw it as hard as I could directly at Elias’s face.
The heavy silver cross whipped through the air and struck Elias right in the eye.
He shouted in pain, stumbling backward, his shot going wide and shattering a window.
Sebastian didn't hesitate.
He closed the distance in a millisecond, tackling Elias to the floor.
Sebastian pinned Elias down, knocking the gun away.
“You’re going back to your cell, Elias,” Sebastian roared. “And this time, I’m throwing away the key!”
Elias laughed bitterly, blood dripping from his nose.
“You’re just like him, Sebastian. You’re just like Antonio.”
“No,” Sebastian said quietly. “I’m better.”
Sebastian pulled out his phone and dialed the local police.
Ten minutes later, the sirens wailed outside.
Elias was dragged away in handcuffs, screaming curses into the crisp autumn air.
Sebastian and I stood on the steps of the old bank, watching the police cars drive away.
The sun was beginning to set, casting long, golden shadows through the trees.
Sebastian turned to me.
He reached out and gently took my hands in his.
“You saved my life. Again.”
I smiled, my heart incredibly full.
“That’s what a Chief of Staff is for.”
Sebastian shook his head slowly.
“I don't want you to be my Chief of Staff, Megan.”
He reached into his pocket.
And this time, he didn't pull out a key.
He pulled out a small, simple velvet box.
He opened it.
Inside was a beautiful, elegant diamond ring.
Not flashy. Not gaudy. Just perfect.
“I want you to be my wife,” Sebastian whispered, his eyes shining with tears. “I want to build a family with you. A real family, built on truth and love. Not secrets.”
Tears spilled down my cheeks.
I thought of my father, safe and happy.
I thought of Ruth and Frank, finding peace in their small diner.
And I looked at the incredible, honorable man standing in front of me.
“Yes,” I sobbed, throwing my arms around his neck. “Yes, Sebastian. Forever.”
Sebastian wrapped his arms around me, lifting me off the ground and spinning me in the cool autumn air.
He kissed me, and in that moment, all the shadows of the past melted away.
The Romano legacy was no longer a story of fire and betrayal.

It was a story of redemption.
And it all started with a woman in a faded green coat, and a homemade lemon cake.
