Chapter 8 - THE REVERSAL

The silence in the carriage house was deafening.
I stared at the birth certificate in my trembling hands.
I looked at Ruth.
The sweet, quiet, sixty-three-year-old woman who had brought a homemade lemon cake to a wedding rehearsal.
She was standing near the door, her face completely pale.
“Mom?” Vivienne whispered, taking a step away from her. “What is this?”
Julian Vance began to laugh.
A slow, cruel, victorious laugh that echoed off the wooden walls of the carriage house.
“Did you really think it was a coincidence?” Julian sneered, looking at Vivienne. “Did you really think a billionaire like Sebastian Romano just happened to fall in love with a diner waitress from Pennsylvania?”
Sebastian stared at Ruth.
“You knew,” Sebastian said, his voice laced with betrayal.
Ruth closed her eyes, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“I had to,” she whispered.
Frank Ellis looked completely lost.
“Ruthie? What are they talking about?”
Ruth gently touched her husband’s arm.
“I'm so sorry, Frank.”
She looked at Sebastian.
“Thirty years ago, before I met Frank, I worked as a secretary for your father, Antonio.”
I gasped.
Ruth looked down at her worn shoes.
“I fell in love with Julian. He was charming. Powerful. He promised me the world.”
She wiped her eyes.
“But when I got pregnant, Julian didn't want the baby. He told me to get rid of it. He said a child would ruin his career with the Romano family.”
Julian rolled his eyes.
“It was bad timing.”
Ruth’s voice hardened.
“It was my son.”
She looked back at Sebastian.
“I went to your father for help. Antonio was a ruthless man, but he loved children. He told me he would protect the baby.”
Ruth took a deep, shaking breath.
“Antonio took my son the night of the fire. He hid him in the vault to protect him from Julian. He gave me a new identity. He moved me to Pennsylvania, bought the diner, and told me never to contact Julian again.”
Vivienne was shaking.
“You gave up your son?”
“I saved his life!” Ruth cried. “Antonio told me Julian would kill him if he found out I kept the baby.”
Ruth looked at Vivienne.
“A few years later, I met Frank. We had you, Vivienne. I tried to give you a perfect life. I tried to forget.”
She sobbed.
“But five years ago, Julian found me.”
Julian smirked.
“It wasn't hard. You kept the same terrible taste in coats.”
Ruth glared at him.
“He told me he found out about the boy. He told me the boy was locked in the basement of this mansion.”
Ruth looked at Sebastian, her eyes filled with desperate sorrow.
“Julian told me that if I didn't help him get inside the Romano family, he would kill my son.”
Sebastian’s jaw tightened.
“So you pushed Vivienne toward me.”
Ruth nodded, weeping.
“Julian arranged the meeting. He arranged the 'accidental' coffee shop encounter in New York. He orchestrated the entire romance.”
Vivienne collapsed onto an old wooden crate, burying her face in her hands.
“My whole life is a lie,” she sobbed.
“I did it to save your brother, Vivienne!” Ruth pleaded. “Julian promised that once the wedding happened and the money was transferred, he would let my son go!”
“And you believed him?” my father growled, raising the shotgun toward Julian.
“I’m a mother!” Ruth screamed. “I would burn the world down to save my children!”
Suddenly, the heavy wooden doors of the carriage house crashed open.
The wind and rain howled into the room.
Standing in the doorway was a tall man in a dark suit.
He looked exactly like Julian Vance, but thirty years younger.
He held a suppressed pistol in his right hand.
“Hello, mother,” the man said.
His voice was soft, polite, and completely terrifying.
Ruth covered her mouth.
“Elias?” she whispered.
Elias Vance stepped into the carriage house.
He looked at Julian.
“You took your time, old man.”
Julian smiled proudly.
“I had to deal with the rats, son. But the money is secure. The empire is ours.”
Elias raised the pistol, aiming it directly at Sebastian.
“Antonio Romano kept me in a box for thirty years,” Elias said coldly. “Tonight, I’m putting his son in one.”
Elias pulled the trigger.

But Vivienne Ashcroft didn't freeze.
She threw herself in front of Sebastian.
