Chapter 11 - THE BROKEN VOW

My heart stopped.

The red laser dot on Thomas’s chest in the photograph burned into my retinas.

Don Carmine wasn't here to negotiate with Antonio. He was here to blackmail me.

He knew who I was.

"Lily?" Evelyn asked, noticing my frozen state.

"Take Leo to your room," I whispered, my voice hollow. "Lock the door."

Without waiting for her to argue, I turned and sprinted down the grand staircase.

I burst through the front doors just as Antonio was stepping down to meet Carmine.

"Lily, I told you to stay inside!" Antonio barked.

I ignored him, marching straight down the stone steps toward the old mafia don.

Carmine smiled, leaning heavily on his silver cane.

"Ah," Carmine rasped. "The secret daughter. Vincenzo’s little ghost."

Antonio stepped in front of me, shielding me with his body. "You don't speak to her, Carmine. You're here for your daughter. She's in a holding cell downtown, where she belongs."

"My daughter is a fool," Carmine spat, his eyes cold. "She let a maid outsmart her. I don't care if she rots in prison for a few years. It will teach her discipline."

Antonio frowned. "Then why are you here?"

Carmine looked past Antonio, meeting my eyes.

"Because Vincenzo made a deal with me thirty years ago," Carmine said. "He borrowed three million dollars from my family to build his empire. The collateral was the Southside deeds. But he never transferred them."

"My father paid you back in cash!" Antonio argued.

"I don't want cash!" Carmine roared, striking his cane against the pavement. "I want the land! And according to the old laws of our families, if a debt isn't settled by the father, it falls to the eldest child."

Carmine pointed a gnarled finger at me.

"She is older than you, Antonio. By two years. The debt is hers."

Antonio laughed bitterly. "You're insane. Lily owns nothing. She doesn't have the deeds."

"No," Carmine smiled wickedly. "But she has a brother. A sweet boy studying to be a nurse at Penn State. It would be a shame if he never graduated."

Antonio froze, turning to look at me.

I pulled the antique sapphire necklace from my pocket.

"This is what you really want," I said, my voice shaking.

Carmine’s eyes locked onto the gem. Greed flared in his pupils.

"The Caruso Sapphire," Carmine whispered. "Stolen from my grandfather during the prohibition wars. Yes. That will settle the debt."

"Lily, don't," Antonio warned, grabbing my wrist. "That was your mother's. It's your only connection to her."

I looked at Antonio. My new brother.

Then I thought of Thomas, the boy I had raised, the boy whose diapers I changed, who stayed up late studying anatomy at our tiny kitchen table.

Blood wasn't just about who birthed you. It was about who you protected.

"I'll give it to you," I told Carmine. "On one condition."

"Name it," the old don agreed.

"You leave the Carusos alone. You leave Thomas alone. You sign a blood pact right here, right now, that the feud between our families dies today."

Carmine hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Done."

I pulled out a pen from my apron pocket—the same apron I was supposed to never wear again—and handed it to him.

Carmine signed a small piece of parchment his lawyer produced.

I walked forward and dropped the priceless sapphire necklace into Carmine’s weathered hand.

He smiled, tipping his hat. "A pleasure doing business, Miss Caruso."

He got back into his SUV, and the three vehicles reversed out of the gates, disappearing into the morning mist.

Antonio stared at me in shock.

"You gave up a ten-million-dollar heirloom for peace?" he asked.

"I gave it up for my family," I said softly.

Suddenly, a slow, gentle clapping came from the front doors.

We turned.

Evelyn stood on the porch, tears of absolute pride streaming down her face.

She walked down the steps, holding a small, faded yellow envelope.

"He... knew," she whispered, handing it to me.

"What is this?" I asked.

"Vincenzo," she smiled. "He... tested... you."

May you like

I opened the envelope. Inside was a letter and a set of keys.

If you gave the necklace away to save your family, you have proven your heart. The necklace is a fake. The real wealth is in these keys. Welcome to the family, Lily.
