Chapter 12 - THE TOAST

Six months later.
The dining room of the Caruso mansion was unrecognizable.
Gone were the tense, suffocating dinners filled with dangerous men in dark suits. Gone was the crystal-cold presence of Bianca Romano.
Instead, the long mahogany table was covered in platters of homemade pasta, fresh cannoli from the old neighborhood bakery, and loud, chaotic laughter.
I sat at the right hand of Antonio.
I wasn't wearing an apron. I wore a simple, elegant emerald dress. Around my neck hung the real Caruso Sapphire, retrieved from a safety deposit box using the keys Vincenzo had left me.
Across from me sat my brother, Thomas. He was in his nursing scrubs, having just rushed over from a clinical shift. He was currently showing Leo how to make a paper airplane out of a napkin.
At the head of the table sat Evelyn.
She looked ten years younger. The stress that had aged her was gone.
Antonio stood up, gently tapping his spoon against his wine glass.
The room quieted down.
"Six months ago, this family almost shattered," Antonio said, his voice thick with emotion. He looked at me. "But a brave woman stepped in front of a gun, saved my nephew, and reminded me what true loyalty looks like."
He raised his glass to me.
"To my sister, Lily. The heart of this house."
"To Lily!" Thomas and Leo cheered.
I blushed, smiling so hard my cheeks hurt.
"But tonight," Antonio continued, turning to the head of the table, "tonight belongs to the woman who held us together for twenty-seven years in the dark."
Antonio sat down.
Evelyn slowly stood up.
She didn't have a folded yellow paper this time. She didn't need one.
Her physical therapy, combined with the removal of her immense psychological burden, had worked miracles.
She looked around the table. At her son. At her new daughter. At her grandson.
She took a deep breath.
"My darling family," Evelyn began, her voice steady, clear, and ringing with warmth. "The first time I held my son, I knew my life was no longer my own. For years, I carried secrets to protect you. But I was wrong."
She smiled, looking directly at Antonio, then at me.
"Secrets do not protect a family. Love protects a family. Truth protects a family."
She raised her glass of sparkling cider.
"We have survived the storm. The shadows are gone. From this day forward, there is only light in this house. To the Carusos."
"To the Carusos!" we all echoed, our voices blending in perfect harmony.
As we drank, I felt a warm hand on my shoulder.
It was Thomas, smiling at me. "You did it, sis. We're safe."
I looked around the room, at the golden light reflecting off the chandeliers, at Leo giggling, at Antonio laughing freely for the first time in his life.
I touched the sapphire at my throat.
I was no longer the maid terrified of losing her job.
I was Lily Caruso.
May you like
And I was finally home.
