Chapter 7 - THE TEN MILLION DOLLAR SECRET

The heavy brass doorknob rattled aggressively, the sound echoing like gunfire in the quiet master bedroom.
“Vincent!” Vanessa screamed from the hallway, her voice laced with absolute, unhinged panic. She began pounding her fists against the thick oak wood. “Open this door right now! I know you’re in there!”
Vincent stood up from his mother’s bedside, slipping the gold signet ring into his pocket. His eyes were dark, his jaw set like granite. The illusion was entirely shattered. The war had officially begun in the middle of the night.
“Stay away from the door, Emily,” Vincent commanded quietly, motioning for her to stand behind the heavy mahogany wardrobe.
Emily moved swiftly, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She gripped the edge of the wood, terrified of the monster on the other side of the door.
“Vincent, if you don't open this door, I am calling the police!” Vanessa threatened, her voice growing shriller by the second. “I will tell them you are having a psychotic break and holding an elderly woman hostage!”
Vincent walked calmly toward the door. He didn't yell. He didn't bang back. He simply unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.
Vanessa stumbled forward, her red satin gown wrinkled, her hair wild. She looked like a cornered animal.
She saw the manila folders resting on the foot of Teresa’s bed.
“You broke into my safe,” Vanessa hissed, her eyes darting between the documents and Vincent’s stone-cold expression.
“And you forged my mother’s will and took out a ten-million-dollar bounty on her life,” Vincent replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. “I’d say breaking a lock is the lesser offense.”
Vanessa’s facade completely evaporated. The sweet, loving fiancée vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating predator who realized her trap had been sprung too early.
She let out a harsh, bitter laugh, taking a step backward into the hallway.
“You think you’ve won because you found some papers?” Vanessa sneered, crossing her arms. “Those are just drafts, Vincent. Unsigned copies. You can't prove anything. And tomorrow morning, Judge Hastings is going to sign a court order declaring your mother entirely incompetent.”
“You won't get near a judge,” Vincent stated, stepping out into the hallway and closing the bedroom door behind him to shield his mother and Emily. “I’m calling the police right now. I have Clara’s notebook. I have the pills. You’re going to jail, Vanessa.”
Vanessa didn't look scared. Instead, a slow, wicked smile spread across her face.
“Go ahead. Call them,” Vanessa taunted softly. “Tell them your maid found a notebook. Tell them you found some pills in my purse. And while you do that, I’ll pull out my phone and send a very interesting photograph of Emily’s little brother holding a stolen diamond bracelet directly to his probation officer.”
Vincent’s blood boiled. “You won't touch her family.”
“I will destroy her family,” Vanessa corrected viciously. “If you call the police, that boy goes to a maximum-security prison for ten years. His life will be over, and it will be your fault, because you couldn't just let the old woman go quietly.”
The silence in the hallway was suffocating. Vanessa was playing her trump card, holding Emily’s innocent brother hostage to ensure Vincent’s paralysis.
But Vanessa had made one massive miscalculation.
The heavy oak bedroom door clicked open behind Vincent.
Emily stepped out into the hallway.
She was trembling, her face pale, but her chin was held high. The quiet, invisible housemaid who had spent her entire life apologizing for taking up space was suddenly standing tall.
“Send it,” Emily said, her voice ringing clear and steady in the dark corridor.
Vanessa froze, staring at the maid in absolute shock. “What did you say?”
“Send the photograph,” Emily repeated, taking a step forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Vincent. “Call his probation officer. Tell them whatever you want.”
“Are you insane?” Vanessa spat, her eyes widening in disbelief. “He’ll go to prison!”
“No, he won't,” Emily replied, her voice gaining strength with every word. “Because my brother was wearing his work uniform in that photo. He works at the community center, which is heavily funded by the Hale Charitable Foundation. And when the police investigate, Mr. Hale will testify that Tommy was in this house at his direct invitation, handling a donation.”
Vincent looked at Emily, absolute awe and profound respect washing over him. She was calling Vanessa’s bluff with brilliant, fearless improvisation.
“You can try to destroy my family, Vanessa,” Emily said, her eyes flashing with a fierce, protective fire. “But I will not let you murder this family to do it. You are not taking Mrs. Hale.”
Vanessa’s face contorted with pure rage. Her ultimate leverage had just been neutralized by a woman she considered beneath her notice.
“You stupid little girl,” Vanessa hissed, taking a step toward Emily, her hands curling into fists. “You think you can protect her? You think you can stop what’s coming?”
Before Vanessa could take another step, a loud, heavy pounding echoed from the grand foyer downstairs.
Someone was banging on the massive front doors.
Vanessa’s rage instantly morphed into a triumphant, manic grin. She looked at her luxury wristwatch.
“Right on time,” Vanessa whispered.
She pushed past Vincent and ran toward the sweeping staircase.
Vincent and Emily exchanged a terrified look before sprinting after her, looking down into the grand foyer from the top landing.
The front doors were pulled open by a confused, sleepy security guard.
Standing in the doorway, flanked by two massive men wearing sterile white medical uniforms, was David.
Vincent’s best friend looked impeccable in a tailored navy suit, despite the late hour. His face was set in an expression of deep, tragic concern, but his eyes were completely dead.
“David,” Vincent breathed, the betrayal hitting him all over again like a physical blow.
David looked up at the landing. He didn't look at Vanessa. He looked directly at Vincent.
“Vincent, I am so sorry to do this in the middle of the night,” David called up, his voice echoing in the foyer, laced with a sickly, faux sympathy. “But Vanessa called me. She said Teresa had a violent wandering episode. She said Teresa attacked a maid.”
Emily gasped, gripping the banister.
“I have an emergency psychiatric hold order,” David continued, waving a piece of official-looking paper. “Signed by the on-call magistrate ten minutes ago. These orderlies are here to safely transport Teresa to the facility for her own protection.”
Vanessa stood at the bottom of the stairs, turning back to look at Vincent with a sickeningly sweet smile.
“It’s out of our hands, darling,” Vanessa said loudly, playing her part for the orderlies. “It’s for her own good.”

David gestured to the two massive men in white uniforms. They weren't real orderlies. They were hired muscle, holding heavy leather medical restraints in their hands.
“Go upstairs,” David commanded the men. “Bring Mrs. Hale down. Use restraints if she resists.”
