Chapter 8 - THE BRACELET OF LIES

The two massive men in white uniforms placed their heavy boots on the first step of the grand staircase.

Vincent didn't hesitate. He didn't shout. He moved with a terrifying, explosive speed, sprinting down the stairs and stopping on the landing midway down, physically blocking their path.

“Take one more step,” Vincent said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made both men freeze in their tracks. “And I will throw you both over this railing and break your necks.”

The men looked back at David, unsure of how to proceed against the billionaire owner of the estate.

“Vincent, please,” David sighed, stepping forward, playing the role of the concerned best friend to perfection. “Don’t make this harder than it has to be. The magistrate signed the emergency order. Teresa is a danger to herself and others. Vanessa said she attacked Emily.”

“I am standing right here!” Emily yelled from the top of the stairs, her hands gripping the banister so tightly her knuckles were white. “Mrs. Hale didn't touch me! Vanessa is lying!”

David didn't even look up at her. He kept his eyes fixed on Vincent.

“The maid is clearly terrified of you, Vincent,” David said smoothly, spinning the narrative effortlessly. “You’re protecting your mother, I get it. But you’re in denial. Step aside.”

Vincent stared down at the man he had considered a brother for over a decade. He looked at the tailored suit, the confident posture, the absolute absence of guilt.

And then, Vincent’s eyes caught something glinting under the foyer chandelier.

As David raised his hand to gesture to the orderlies, his suit cuff rode up slightly, revealing a heavy, distinct gold chain bracelet on his wrist.

Vincent’s breath hitched in his throat.

It was a custom-made Cartier bracelet. Vincent knew it intimately. He had bought it for Vanessa six months ago in Paris for her birthday. It was a one-of-a-kind piece.

And it was currently wrapped around his best friend’s wrist.

The final, sickening piece of the puzzle snapped into place. Vanessa wasn't manipulating David. David wasn't manipulating Vanessa.

They were together.

“You’re wearing her bracelet,” Vincent stated, his voice hollow, the words hanging heavily in the silent foyer.

David froze. He quickly pulled his arm down, shooting his cuff to cover the gold chain, but it was too late. The damage was done.

Vanessa, standing near the front door, let out a sharp, panicked gasp. Her eyes darted between Vincent and David, realizing their deepest secret had just been exposed in the worst possible moment.

Vincent let out a harsh, bitter laugh that sounded entirely devoid of humor.

“This was never just about stealing the company,” Vincent realized, the profound depth of their betrayal washing over him. “You’ve been sleeping in my guest room for two years, David. You were going to kill my mother, steal my legacy, and run off with my fiancée.”

David’s faux sympathy completely evaporated. The mask slipped, revealing a cold, arrogant predator who was tired of playing games.

“Your father never respected me, Vincent,” David spat, his voice turning vicious. “He treated me like a glorified assistant while he handed you the keys to an empire you didn't earn. I built the Hale firm. I doubled our profits. And what did I get? A corner office and a pat on the back. I deserve this estate. I deserve Vanessa.”

“You’re pathetic,” Vincent whispered, utter disgust radiating from every syllable.

David sneered. He looked at the two large men in white uniforms.

“He’s obstructing a court-ordered medical transport,” David commanded coldly. “Move him. By any means necessary.”

The two men cracked their knuckles and lunged up the stairs toward Vincent.

Vincent didn't back down. As the first man swung a heavy fist, Vincent ducked underneath it, driving his knee brutally into the man’s stomach. The orderly doubled over, gasping for air, and Vincent shoved him violently backward down the carpeted stairs.

The second man, massive and built like a tank, grabbed Vincent by the lapels of his shirt, slamming him hard against the wooden banister. The wood groaned under the impact.

“Vincent!” Emily screamed from the top landing.

Vincent struggled, throwing a right hook that connected solidly with the man’s jaw, but the orderly barely flinched, raising a heavy fist to strike Vincent across the temple.

Suddenly, a heavy, metallic WHACK echoed through the stairwell.

The massive orderly groaned, his eyes rolling back into his head, and collapsed like a felled tree, tumbling down the stairs to land in a heap at David’s feet.

Vincent gasped for air, looking up.

Standing on the step above him, breathing heavily, her chest heaving, was Emily.

She was holding a solid brass fire poker, her knuckles white, her eyes burning with a fierce, terrifying adrenaline. She had run to the hallway fireplace and grabbed the heaviest thing she could find to protect him.

Emily stood over Vincent, pointing the brass poker down at David and Vanessa in the foyer.

“Take one more step,” Emily warned, her voice shaking but undeniably lethal. “I swear to God, I will break your skull.”

David stared at the maid in absolute shock. The quiet, invisible servant had just incapacitated a two-hundred-pound mercenary and was now threatening his life with a fireplace tool.

Vanessa panicked. “David, do something! Call the police! Tell them Vincent assaulted the medical staff!”

“I already called them,” a raspy, powerful voice announced from the top of the stairs.

Everyone froze.

Standing at the top landing, leaning heavily on the wall but standing entirely upright, was Teresa Hale.

She looked pale, and her hands were trembling, but her eyes were sharp, lucid, and filled with the formidable authority of a woman who had built an empire alongside her husband.

“I called Captain Reynolds,” Teresa stated, looking directly down at David. “He was a very dear friend of my late husband. I told him there were intruders in my home attempting a kidnapping. He is on his way right now with three squad cars.”

David’s face drained of all color. The entire plan had hinged on Teresa being drugged, confused, and compliant. A lucid, powerful matriarch calling in favors from the police captain was the ultimate nightmare scenario.

In the distance, the faint, rising wail of police sirens pierced the quiet night air.

David looked at Vanessa, pure panic setting in. “We have to go. Now.”

He turned and bolted for the front door, entirely abandoning the two unconscious orderlies on the floor.

“David, wait for me!” Vanessa screamed, hiking up her red satin gown and sprinting after him.

But as Vanessa reached the heavy oak doors, they swung open violently from the outside.

Standing on the porch, illuminated by the flashing red and blue lights of the approaching squad cars, was Captain Reynolds, flanked by four uniformed officers with their hands on their weapons.

“Going somewhere, David?” Captain Reynolds asked gruffly, stepping into the foyer and blocking their only exit.
